I like the look of it more than the standard Apple Watch. I never liked the idea of the Apple Watch as jewelry. It's a computer on your wrist, tailor the design to fit the function. That's exactly what the Ultra is. Each of the major design elements is in service of the function of the Watch in its intended use cases. I think it's going to blow away not just the current Apple Watch but the majority of the competitors in the performance watch segment.

I think many of you are going to be blown away upon seeing it in person -- especially in comparison to others in this category. I think it's going to look amazing.

Go look at any tool watches right now. Casio G-Shocks. Luminox. Garmins. Any mechanical diver, at any price. Apple Watch Ultra is going to blow many of them away, and hold its own against the uber-expensive Swiss mechanical offerings. Which one of these would you rather:

I agree, it looks good in it’s category.

But even so, I won’t be wearing my Ultra to the office. I know many do wear their hardcore watches all the time but that doesn’t mean it looks good. Like, I won‘t wear running shoes with a suit. But some people don’t care.

I certainly don’t think Garmin’s watches look nicer. They fall into the most typical trap of round smart watch design.

The trap of round smartwatch design? Lol

A lot of people online prefer the round face to the rounded rectangle. It’s not to say it’s better but it is functional and preferred by a chunk of consumers. Certainly not a trap.

You really need to get a grip :D

It's a dive/spports watch. They are supposed to look ugly. It's probably not ugly enough for a lot dudes. LOL

I use to wear a dive watch for years. Casio I think. Sort of Tank-ish. Plenty of photos here actually. I did use it on dives. You need one. But you only really need a depth-proof stopwatch. But this will do :)
We’re holding it wrong…

That won’t happen. Go look at Garmin. Unless you are heavy in Apple’s ecosystem Garmin offers competitive products. Not saying they’re better across the board but the Ultra does not blow highend Garmins away.

Apple Watch Ultra isn't just a watch for beauty, it's a watch for explorers and divers marathoners as advertised, double battery divers computer, etc. For this purpose, the design is not the main requirement, but it looks more beautiful because it has them.
How many more excuses can we make? It’s ugly. I realize not everyone agrees but we have collectively lost the plot when we make excuses for Apple.

I said most, not all. A lot of people doubted the original Apple Watch when it came out as well. Just saying.

well positioned set of pics. :) off topic for many but by chance does anyone know what the bottom right “my bike” complication is? Is there a built-in app for the Ultra watch that supports biking in some way(s) that the current s7 and s8 do not? I’m still on the fence about upgrading to “ultra”, I’d appreciate the battery life. Sometimes I do find it’s a bit ugly or at least not as elegant and understated as the s7 and s8. Other times (such as looking at it after these other pics) its appearance seems just fine for me. Hmm..

I have a MBP M1 16. It's a fantastic computer, but aesthetically it's not great. I think this watch is the same... but def worse. I do think Apple are at their best when they find that perfect blend of design and usability/function.

Apple has always had interesting, fresh and cool designs to their products. I don't think you can say any of these things about the Ultra. Apple is supposed to take things like this segment and then redefine it. That can happen through software and hardware. I don't think it's happening through hardware even though the watch will be sold out.

I feel like their designs have become Honda-ish of late. Honda used to produce attention grabbing vehicles, but in their pursuit of trying to become Toyota their made all their designs bland. They sold a heap more cars as they grabbed more markets, but lost their edge. Now they even admit that and are trying to get that edge back. Not saying that will happen to Apple, but I do think Apple's designs often no longer have that spark to them.

Check out Tag Hauer smartwatches… I’m mot saying that it’s functionally better than an Apple Watch but the Tag partnership with Porsche is pretty cool.

It’s as if Apple isn’t even trying.

Here is the Steve Jobs Apple Watch:

1. Larger display that is widescreen.
2. Thinner body.
3. 1 week battery life.
4. Has liquid battery straps so the battery isn’t just inside the Watch.
5. Siri way better and some focus on the Watch.

Absolutely nails it.

Again, I’m not saying the Tag Hauer Porsche Smartwatch is functionally better than an Apple Watch, but it is a pretty high quality and unique watch with titanium and ceramics and a good chunk of tech built in with some very innovative features that pair with a Porsche car.

When you look at this design it’s quite clean. The Apple Watch Ultra is not clean: it is very un-Apple.

The other thing here is the Ultra on several key features isn’t even class leading.

I live in Canada and spend a lot of time in the bush roughing it on weekends etc. I grew up hunting and fishing in extreme temperatures. If I had a dime for everytime someone, including many vacationers end up lost up here in the bush and sometimes dead with a dead battery in their phone I’d be richer.

60 hours of battery life is a complete joke. It’s better than 1 day, sure. But Garmins offer up to 21 days of battery life. There’s no way to get anywhere near that with an Apple Watch.

Yes you can pack solar panels and all the other crap to charge your watch that takes up room and adds weight and costs a lot but if you’re in very extreme conditions that is not as feasible to rely on this stuff.

And if you can get weeks of battery life out of a decent Apple Watch alternative, Apple is missing the mark.

Gotta love these type threads. Someone who supposedly has no interest in a product, typing think pieces about said product, in an attempt to convince a group of people who have already pre-ordered, why it's not worthy of their purchase. I often wonder if these posters are actually trying to convince us or themselves.

Nice strawman. I don't "supposedly have no interest" in this product. Of course I do. I'm bought into Apple's ecosystem. What I gotta love is people like you who come into a thread and hijack it with useless and non-value added judgements.

I love big watches (Invicta, Fossil, Movado). So, already looking to purchase an Ultra. However, not fully sold on the price. So, haven't purchased, just yet...

Speaking of "useless non-value added judgements." Case in point.

Full disclosure: I ordered the Ultra. I believe that I won't keep it because I dislike the design, but I am still, in spite of this, willing to try because of how bought into the Apple ecosystem I am.

I am really looking at Tag Hauer and Garmin so if I return the Ultra that will be where my focus is. The price of the Ultra is really high. This thing is a consumable, so once the battery is degraded it's hard to understand the usefullness of it. I know the Garms and Tags are pricey too though.

Before I order an Ultra, I might take a trip to the local Apple shop, to see one. More than likely they are already in the display cases, no? I'll phone and confirm, first...

Go look unless you're willing to buy and return like me. It's a lot of money for what is really just an Apple Watch.
