No dude, you're not going to erect a strawman and then try and hijack a thread. Anymore of this and I'll be reporting all of your posts.
This is the most "im taking my ball and going home" post ever

Newsflash some of us think that this watch looks a lot better than the normal watch. In fact in the very post that you started the vast majority of voters don't think its ugly.

I will never understand why people feel the need to speak for everyone in posts like this with every new product release.

I think the Apple Watch Ultra looks like a bag of smashed axxholes. It's perhaps one of the ugliest products Apple has ever produced. It looks like a prototype that was made in a 12 year old's garage. It may have some very good watch functions but I would undergo cyclical vomiting if I had to wear that piece of axx everyday.

Full disclosure: I ordered the Ultra. I believe that I won't keep it because I dislike the design, but I am still, in spite of this, willing to try because of how bought into the Apple ecosystem I am.
Honestly... how are we supposed to take anything the OP says seriously

Another strawman. I never said, I speak for everyone. Bang, a strawman. Totally illogical and nonsensical. Of course I don't speak for everyone the very fact that I posted online and setup a poll to see what people think is complete evidence of that. At the same time I can discuss with people who like the look of it and debate the finer points of good design but everyone is entitled to their position.

You keep erecting strawmen. You insert things in your argument that are non-factual (saying I mean and say specific things that in fact are untrue) and illogical as you try and setup an argument against the topic. An argument that is based on false and illogical premises and distorts the main essence of my position.

Strawman: "A straw man argument, sometimes called a straw person argument or spelled strawman argument, is the logical fallacy of distorting an opposing position into an extreme version of itself and then arguing against that extreme version."

That's what you're doing.

Strawman 1: "I will never understand why people feel the need to speak for everyone in posts like this with every new product release." WRONG. Never did I say neither did I imply I speak for everyone. I don't.

Ad hominen attack: "how are we supposed to take anything the OP says seriously".

It's not hard to take me seriously. I'm completely honest and transparent and have posted a poll to gather other's opinions that is visible to everyone. The very fact that I ordered the Ultra even though I hate the design should demonstrate that I am objective and willing to give it a chance in spite of how much I dislike the design. In other words, I don't have some bias against Apple or the product, etc.

It's definitely an... interesting design. Kind of reminds me of hydraulic machines, not something like the Macbook Pro or Mac Pro, which still look good for pro machines. At least they managed to make it look nice in the marketing.

How many more excuses can we make? It’s ugly. I realize not everyone agrees but we have collectively lost the plot when we make excuses for Apple.
The italicized part doesn't change the fact that the bold part implies you are speaking for everyone.

It's kind of like if I said "with all due respect, you are an idiot" with all due respect doesn't excuse the rudeness of calling someone an idiot.

So go through your list of fallacies and let me know which one you think this is.

Its really ok that you hate the way this watch looks that part doesn't bother me at all, but the fact that you would still buy it after talking so strongly about how much you hate it is extremely odd to me. And then to act like people are getting off topic or strawmanning you in a thread where your first post just said vote is just silly.

The best part is there is still the very nice series 8 for people who don't like the looks of the Ultra.

People make excuses for Apple, that is a fact. The implication on some posts is that people acknowledge in their own way that the design may not be that stellar but the Watch has other functions that it supposedly does well so that makes up for any design issues. Not hard to understand this...

Also, why is it odd to you that I ordered the Ultra? It shouldn't be, because I clearly explained it. I am bought into Apple's ecosystem heavily, that's why. And the fact that I can be flexible and objective in my thinking. I don't believe I will keep it.

The best part of what you just posted is you just did what you charge myself of doing: you appear to speak for EVERYONE when you say that the Series 8 Watch is there for people who don't like the Ultra, like somehow everyone is supposed to like the Series 8 as well. News flash: I also don't like the Series 8 design. I've been wearing Apple Watches on and off for years and stopped wearing them. I do like the round watch face better in some respects but I am heavy into Apple's ecosystem but am at this point considering a Tag Heuer or Garmin.

I think I will like it, though I am currently not in the market for a new Apple Watch yet (series 5 still going strong).

It has a larger screen, and being 1.8m tall myself, shouldn't look too out of place on my wrist. I feel it has a rather rugged aesthetic, and I am intrigued by the action button (eg: can I map it to a shortcut action?).

Price-wise, it's not that expensive either (costing about 50% more than a sports model with cellular, and roughly the same as a stainless steel variant?). I am not really the sporty, athletic type, and I had previously resisted buying the more expensive watch models as they didn't come with any added functionality, but I wouldn't be averse to treating myself to a more "premium" Apple Watch model.

I get that appearance is subjective, but I find the people attacking its design with extreme vitriol seem to have more an axe to grind (just because they can) than they are serious about starting an honest conversation.

Or, just assume that people who don't like the design just don't like the design. There is no axe to grind.

I hope it works out for you.

I also don't like the Series 8 design.
This is where I diverge from you OP re Apple Watches. But that's okay as I think we have vastly different uses for the watch. Plus I prefer the rectangular look of the Apple Watch over the traditional round look. I personally think the AW 7/8 is very good looking watch. I like how they flattened it and made the curves sleeker. It's not the best it can be, but it was a decent change from the bulbous shape of the earlier Apple Watches. I used to own some fantastic looking watches and they all came from the Japanese company, Deadman. I doubt they still make watches, but back in the late 90s and early 2000s they were pumping out some fantastic designs.

I do wish Apple would give us more variety in watch faces. I checked out the link you posted for the Tag Porsche and a couple of those watch faces looked ace. I simply don't understand why Apple is so stingy on watch faces. Why haven't they opened a watch face store? I find 99% of Apple's watch faces to be meh and believe they could do a lot more. Especially with the rectangular shape.

I also believe that some people will defend their purchase via post purchase rationalisation. This is a very real cognitive bias. So I think it is difficult to get some to accept the watch isn't great looking. And of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but... sometimes you just gotta call it how it really is! haha. They will redesign it and it will look better in the future.

And if you can get weeks of battery life out of a decent Apple Watch alternative, Apple is missing the mark.

Were I to get one of these it would be to replace an aging Suunto D9 and an Oceanic DataMask. (I’m not though, since I don’t dive much now.)

Three or four hours of battery would be sufficient.

Apple hasn’t missed any mark at all, except yours. Just get something else, this isn’t the product for you.

To me, the Ultra looks like an amazing product, both aesthetically and from a feature/specs perspective.

Finally a rational post. Post purchase rationalization is definitely a thing as is the worship of a fruity for profit company.

I’ll check out Deadman. I should say I don’t hate the Apple Watch Series 8 but I’m at a point where I don’t really like it either.

The Tag Porsche watch is definitely sick. For me Apple has gone stale with their smartwatch. But that is par for the course with Tim Cook. It’s now been how many years of having what really is the same fundamental watch design since gen 1?

It just doesn’t appeal to me anymore neither does it work well for me.

Check out some reviews on Tag and Garmin. The Garmin Fenix 7 has a fricking flashlight built in! Not the screen, a separate flashlight that casts a light in front of you. It also has solar. And many other features. It’s kinda mind boggling.

Yes Apple has a strong OS but at this point held back by stagnant hardware design.

Hilarious. So I am the only one that thinks the Apple Watch missed the mark because it's a product that is designed for extreme activities/expeditions and barely has 2.5 days of battery life? Or the fact that this poll shows that I'm by far not alone in my dislike of its design...

Ok.

Different feature sets. Watches with weeks of battery lack the capabilities of the Ultra. Get the watch that suits you.

I never said, I speak for everyone.

But you sort of just did:

we have collectively lost the plot when we make excuses for Apple

Who is this “collective we” if not everyone?

It sure looks to me like you’re saying that everyone finds the watch unattractive and that anyone who doesn’t admit it is making excuses for Apple.

Show me the research you did to come to the conclusion that "Watches with weeks of battery lack the capabilities of the Ultra." That is complete BS.

Stop twisting things. I responded to a specific point about someone saying I'm speaking for everyone when I call out the terrible design of the Apple Watch.

By me saying that collective comment, I was saying in a politically correct way that there are a ton of Apple Fanboys on here, and even though I made it sound like I lumped myself into that... I just used we to try and make it look like I'm with everyone so it didn't come off like I was being too critical of others.

We will put you down as a “maybe” on the Ultra as we all know you ordered one. 😬

🤦‍♂️

Garmin Fenix some, but not all, features

Yeah, let’s meet back here when you find one with all the features. Ok?

(For starters, the Garmin Fenix drops to a measly 36 hours if you turn the GPS on.)

I think you’ve missed an “e” off the end of your username.

You know this isn’t the new, “mainstream” Apple Watch right, this is a new model. Google some of the Garmin, Polar & Suunto watches if you want a comparison of what designs it’s now competing with.
