I'm really liking the New Lenovo IdeaPad U400 [ looks like a MBP!! ] but I'm so spoilt by the backlit keyboard on my MBP, I can't use any laptop w/o it now!!

However, I would recommend a used/refurb'd MBP [ I got mine from the Amazon Warehouse deal for $589!!! and it was in new packaging with full 1 year Apple warranty and looks and works like brand new! ] I am extremely satisfied with my first Mac. The best part is, with bootloader, I am running Windows 7 on it too!! :D

If you'd rather go the Windows route, that's fine too.. My Dell XPS 1210m from 2006 is still going strong on Win 7 Pro !!

I would go with a Macbook Air, either one of the July 2011 ones or a refurbished one. An iPad is an excellent suggestion, however, you should definitely consider it.

Do what I did when I needed a second computer just for internet and email....buy a $300 iPad from Criagslist :). Perfect for just internet and email, and more useful than a netbook :)

A refurbished base model 2.3GHz MBP is $929 when available at the online Apple Store.

If you get an MBA be sure you can return it easily. Lots of people have problems with the LED backlight and/or high resolution display. I was ready to buy an 11" MBA. I developed a splitting headache within 15 minutes and severe eyestrain that lasted 8+ hours. No Sale.

Why do you need a backlit keyboard anyway. Most of the time your screen gives out enough light to see the keyboard.

Btw the thinkpad does have a light on top of the screen to illuminate the keyboard. Again its not really necessary.

Maybe not necessary for you, but it is for me.. especially on overnight flights!

The ThinkPad's miniscule light on the bezel is just that... miniscule, at best.
