4 should be the absolute minimum anyone has (and the min Apple offers). 2 is not enough.
You don't need 4GB of ram to run Safari, Mail and Word.

I agree, but you don't need an AIR for that either. Buying an AIR, with all it's potential, seems silly with only 2 GB of RAM.You don't need 4GB of ram to run Safari, Mail and Word.

I'm really liking the New Lenovo IdeaPad U400 [ looks like a MBP!! ] but I'm so spoilt by the backlit keyboard on my MBP, I can't use any laptop w/o it now!!
However, I would recommend a used/refurb'd MBP [ I got mine from the Amazon Warehouse deal for $589!!! and it was in new packaging with full 1 year Apple warranty and looks and works like brand new! ] I am extremely satisfied with my first Mac. The best part is, with bootloader, I am running Windows 7 on it too!!
If you'd rather go the Windows route, that's fine too.. My Dell XPS 1210m from 2006 is still going strong on Win 7 Pro !!
Why do you need a backlit keyboard anyway. Most of the time your screen gives out enough light to see the keyboard.
Btw the thinkpad does have a light on top of the screen to illuminate the keyboard. Again its not really necessary.
