What's all this about soldering memory?

Aren't the RAM modules the same as the last MBA which just slot in (and held in place with a single screw)?

No as Mountain Lion wipes the lion install. The only way around is to copy the Lion boot image disk onto an different disk and downgarde by booting onto that.

... Um, Yes you can. You get a lion flash drive and re-format. Since you'd technically own a license, if you found it hard to find an official copy of lion (where it's not available on disk), you could go to an unofficial source to download a copy and put it on a flash drive. Before anyone flames me, it's not illegal. Just as downloading an MP3 that you already own on a CD is covered by fair use.

Nope! To decrease space or whatever, they are soldered into the main board... And this is only performed in China (I guess).

BTW I have ordered the MBA i5/256/8!

Thanks everyone for your responses!

I'd wait since it's only going to be a few days till it ships. The most recent rumors say ML will ship on July 24. Why not just get a new MBA with it installed. You're sure to get the latest, newest of everything.

If it was going to be a few months, I might wait, but not with the release coming in less than a week.

Either way you're really going to enjoy your Mac :)

Eagerly waiting for ML.. specially for notifications (don't want to buy Growl :D)

And I am entitled for a free upgrade :D

----------

Is there any reason to wait until Mountain Lion is released to buy a Macbook Air?

I don't see a reason to wait.. unless you do not want ML and stick to Lion..

Further, ML would be a free upgrade :D

Will it take up more storage space if I order a computer now with Lion and then have to install Mountain Lion later?

Personally, I am waiting for ML to be pre-installed. I'd rather have it ready to go out of the box.

Don't mind waiting a few weeks for the reviews to come out as well, just to ensure everything will work as it is supposed to.

Happy enough with my 2011 MBA at present to wait..

Wow, sounds like a backwards step to me

The RAM has been soldered in on *all* of the MacBook Airs ever released, this isn't new. The SSD *is* replaceable, but uses a non- standard module, with a connector different from earlier MBAs, however OWC now sell these modules (up to 480Gb, I think).

I think it's a no brainer to upgrade the RAM to 8Gb, unless your usage is very light (e.g. no virtual machines, not many browser tabs or applications open at once etc.)
