Wait for Tiger 10.4? Will Apple give recent orders free upgrade?

Hmmm...

Jaguar was $129, Panther was $129...see a pattern? I amazes me that people can spend thousands of dollars on an a new mac and than complain about spending an extra $130 (which, to be honest, isn't required because it's not like your panther equipped mac will stop working when Tiger hits the shelves).

So...my point here is...buy a mac now if you need it...and quit worrying about upgrade costs. Think of the fact that you don't have to buy any antivirus software. The cost would be about the same...

Playing the stupied consumer... when I clicked on "add to shopping cart" I wasn't aware that I'd have to pay for service pack level upgrades. Then I found out that that there was a service pack level upgrade coming out within the few months.

Thing is "I" am not spending thosands of dollars on a new Mac nor are any of the new Mac mini adopters. And antivirus doesn't cost $129... it costs something like $29.

It's funny what you say about AntiVirus software; in other threads there are others suggesting that they hope OS X doesn't gain as much market share as Windows precisely so that OS X doesn't get targeted by Virus/Spyware attacks.

I am personally going to just keep my order in queue and cross my fingers that they'll be an official date announcement before it ships. And if not I'll upgrade later, maybe when my wife wins the lottery or if I score a better raise.

CORRECTION...

I would say it's quite a bit more than a service pack level upgrade. 10.x upgrades cost money, the 10.x.x upgrades are free. You don't NEED to buy tiger in order for your computer to work, where as it seems the windows service packs are nearly required for functionality.

Anyone have the current developer build of Tiger? No I don't want it, I just wondered what the menu bar looked like? Originally it had blue parts all teh time at either end. Has that changed?

EDIT: Anyone know if it looks like this? I got it from apple.comApple Is this the latest build? looks pretty sweet compared to how it looked before.

Not a service pack upgrade

This is not a service pack upgrade it a OS overhaul the service packs are free which of we are now on 10.3.8. These arent like simple windows updates tiger adds whole new levels to the os like Core Image

I'd pay $129 just for Spotlight. 😛 Not to mention how convenient I expect Dashboard and Automator to be.

Just off the top of my head, the new features, programs, Finder-integrated tools, technologies, and capabilities in Tiger will include Spotlight, Dashboard, the new Mail app, Automator, Parental Controls, the new QuickTime (7), H.264, Core Image... the list of smaller (and useful) things goes on.

Tiger will have MANY *completely new* features and capabilities. To call it a service pack upgrade is laughable. 😉 I think new versions of OS X that are LOADED with new features and improvements come out so balazingly fast compared to Windows updates that most people aren't understanding how big of updates these new OS X releases really are.

Well I've got an order for a Mac mini which has shipped and should be with me in a few days - hopefully Tiger will come out in time for me to get a cheap upgrade, otherwise I will use my sources to get a cheap copy from a US edu store - about $50 as opposed to the probably £80 or so here.

If Google released their desktop search for Mac then I'd use that and not bother upgrading at all. I think Apple should do a sliding discount scale, if you buy a Mac after the Tiger ship date has been announced you get a 80% discount, if you buy a Mac the month before the ship date is announced a 60% discount and so on..(well, a scale something like that).
