If apple redesigns the MBP it will be for OS X Lion.

I have late 2007 black macbook. I plan on buying a new comp when lion arrives so i have a computer that is specifically designed for it both inside and out

Alas, speculating has killed a part of me inside. The wait for my first Mac continues :(

And in 2012, you'll be eagerly anticipating the update that transfers the GPU to a quantum-manifold or whatever.

I'd also never, ever buy the first issue of a major Apple redesign. So in my mind, wait for the update in April or thereabouts, bite the bullet, and start saving for the second or third revision of whatever comes down the line next.

No computer purchase should ever be described as "killing a part of me inside".

Wait for Haswell in 2013 or 2014. Except by then there will be some other cool technology coming out a few years later to wait for.

If you have the money and don't have a computer, get one now. The current designs should last for years to come and are beautiful machines taht wont become outdated(spec-wise) for years.

I'm currently using a 5 year old P.O.S. Dell Inspiron E1505 hand me down but I'm waiting because I don't have the money, and i don't really need one until i head off to USF.

If you need one now, don't wait. If you don't need it, wait till you do.

I've been waiting since October '10 for the MacBook Pro refresh. I think it's coming in April but I don't mind waiting till June if it ships with lion, the free iPod touch student promotion and with SSD and no optical drive.

However, my feelings is that this year's update won't be getting a redesign with Liquidmetal or getting Lightpeak (USB 3.0 competitor) since it's about a year out for both.

If that's the case, should I just buy the new 2011 MacBook Pro or buy a discounted 2010 MacBook Pro and sell it for the 2012 version. Either way, I want the complete redesigned one; it's just which path is the least expensive to get it.

I really hope that a redesign happens this year. At least they should be dropping the optical drive.

How do you even know its going to be redesigned? I would highly doubt any serious change would take place seeing now they have just recently made their entire product line have the same styling. Also you do realize that if they ever actually use liquid metal, there is a 99% chance that only a small part of the computer will actually use it. It's not as if it is going to be the entire computer casing.

WOW! What a response!

You've got something, or we wouldn't be enjoying this conversation.

But, if you really don't have anything and you are borrowing a friend's computer or posting from work, then buy the cheapest thing you can get your hands on until the design you'll be happy with shows up.

In other words, I'm not sure I'd go with a MBP at all right now, if my sole intention was to get rid of it the minute the design changes.

I posted via my iPhone 4. I'm using my University library computers to do my academic work. ;)

TBH, let's just wait for the refresh to happen. No matter what, I'll stick with the new model. I'll upgrade to aftermarket 8GB RAM and in a year or 2 when 512GB drives prices plummet, get an SSD.

I'll wait a few weeks rather then plan out 5 years from now. My bad :p

...oh and the updates Apple releases are useful and include something unlike the 400 Security Updates that Microsoft releases weekly.

AMEN BROTHER!

My Uni has some random software agent for PCs. If your anti-virus and critical updates aren't up to date each time you use Campus Wifi, your limited to 1hr restricted connection just to download those updates.*

Macs on the other hand, awesome stuff and no dumb restrictions in place.

..Does that mean that if the 2011 model doesn't blow me away I'm going to wait? Not a chance. I know it will be more than sufficient, but I bought my late-2009 1 month before the 2010 refresh, because I didn't do my homework. That was annoying...

Good decision...I'm not waiting either. Here's hoping for something interesting from this refresh.

I think it's safe to say we are going to see a new design. Even the OP said he thinks the optical drive will go... if they are going to cast a new body without an ODD then they might as well update the rest of the body as well...I think it's much more accurate to see the body update timeline with the Macbook Air, which would place a new Macbook Pro body change for sometime soon.

Very intelligent reasoning. I hope your logic is the same as Apple's.

Lets hope guys...let us hope :)

buy refurb now then sell for 2028 model...i hear its gona be SICK!!

Why not wait till the update comes out and everyone is up in arms that it's a spec bump and more CTO options, but nothing Earthshattering to you, but something the Bleeding Edge guys will still clamor for? Let them buy the new model and you can snatch up their slightly-used 2010 model for a big discount... Then you can take the savings and apply it to the purchase of your new Liquid Metal iPhone 5!

You can see into the unseen?

You had my imagination for a second :(

People, don't play the wait game...full stop.

I'm just speculating like everyone else! Look at my sig, I obviously haven't been playing the wait game recently... Although, I bought my MBP a few weeks back fully planning to give it to my wife and buy another as soon as the refresh comes if there is anything in the refresh worth writing home about...

I wouldn't count on a redesign coming out next year. I personally don't think we'll see a MBP redesign until 2013 at the earliest. Apple used the Aluminum PowerBook G4 design for 5 years before replacing the design with the Unibody MBP (2003-2008). Apple has basically just finished transitioning their products to the Unibodyish design, so I don't think that they'll be doing a major redesign for at least another two years or so. It just wouldn't make sense.

They dent way too easily. If you can't admit that, I really don't know what to tell you. I mean, it's a very common complain among mbp owners.

People need to be more careful then. I never had a single dent on mine, but I always made sure not to drop it or throw it around.
