Its really hard to make up your mind when your being told a million different things by a million different people :( I just want to make the right choice.

your being told the same thing over and over here. You dont need a MBP power for what you want to do. Unless your willing to wait until next year for santa rosa then buy now

How come everyone is waiting for this so called 'merom chip'? why isnt everyone buying now? it must serve some purpose

It is supposed to give about a 20% increase in performance, and consume slightly less battery power. For you, given your stated needs, the current MBP is already plenty. For those who really need to do large PS work or more resource-intensive applications, it makes sense to wait a couple of weeks. I don't think that's your situation.

As said above its 20% increase. In real life this is nothing. I personally am waiting as i am a developer so want its 64 bit capabilities for leopard next year. If i didn't need this i wouldn't wait.

What will the 64 bit capabilities do? Sorry I know these must seem like stupid questions but I know zippo about chips and I'm fairly new to the mac world. I want to eventually upgrade to Leopard too

You can upgrade to Leopard regardless of whether or not your computer has 64-bit capabilities.

Now, if you search, you can find lots of threads here discussing 64 bit. This one might help.

It's newer technology but as soon as merom chips have been out for awhile, therell be something else that people will be waiting for and asking the same question.

If you want the latest technology all the time, you'll be buying a new MBP every few months (okay... so maybe every year more realistically).

Having an MBP without the merom chip does not meant you're buying a piece of junk.

So from what I got out of that article is that there will be no difference really if I had a 32 bit. I just don't want the MBP to become obsolete like next year...I've always tried to buy the most recent technology and its worked for me in terms of PCs I would assume its the same thing with Macs? Even if its only a small difference

Apple are famous for early adopter issues.

Mostly because Apple's under the spotlight year round, constantly having the "Most Innovative Products" and all. Macs have higher expectations than pc's, they're expected to be "invincible."

Well a return rate of 1 in 5 on a Macbook/MBP is certainly higher than many of its rivals for its machines.

No matter what you choose it'll be a good choice, but I'll add to the confusion and say that if you don't need the MacBook Pro right now, you might as well just wait until it's upgraded for peace of mind. They might upgrade something that nobody has predicted, too. (Better wireless? Double Layer Superdrive?)

And as for problems that come with a new model, I'd say it's less likely with this upcoming model because there aren't any huge changes in architecture like with the recent one from G4 to Intel Core Duo.

One part of me is telling me to buy buy buy but another part is telling me to wait. I think I just might wait its really not that long...even if its a small update then its a small update.

Just to let everyone know.

I'm not waiting! LOL I went and played with a MBP and its perfect for me and that was only a 512 ran one! So i'm going to get the 15" model and upgrade the ram. Should be perfect for me :D

Congrats, I think you made the right decision. :) Oh, and good for you getting a MBP. You don't buy a BMW to drive 150mph all the time, that's all I have to say.

Thanks :D I'm glad I made the right decision (hopefully) but for the stuff I do I think so. Just needed to have a bit of a fiddle around on a MBP to see how awesome it is already

Just thought I'd let you know, as you definetely sound like a noob, if you buy direct through apple you get education discount which is about $380 for MBP. If you buy from a reseller you should wait a month then buy the current model which will become superseeded which they usually start selling for about $300 less.

What i'm saying is this is probably a result of the exponentially higher expectations for Mac.

P.S. where'd you get those #'s from??

Still waiting :( Hasn't shipped yet. Its making me consider a MB instead LOL but I know I will be happier with a MBP
