I don't have contempt for them. I feel pity towards them. Imagine how angry you would be all the time and how empty life would be operating on that basis. I feel sorry for people who need to have more things to feel better about themselves. Disclaimer... I am a hypocrite who loves flaunting his iPhone in public :)

:D well, I don't go around feeling contempt for those people... just when I'm exposed to them. And you rarely find people who openly think this way outside of message boards for Apple fans (because, perhaps 5-10% of Apple fanatics fall into this category, and they are the most vocal of the Apple fans). And I would never claim anything's wrong with liking and being proud of your cool toy and using it public as long as you're not too obnoxious.

I am friends with my Wal-Mart's manager so I know that they are going to start selling iPhones. Both the 8 GB and 16 GB models. 4 GB rumor is a wad of crap but Wal-Mart IS going start selling iPhones. Confirmed. :D

that's not the issue. it's that labeling it as a 8gb phone implies that I can pull 8gb of my stuff on it. when it fact almost a full gig is taken up by the OS and (as I recall reading) space set aside for sms messaging and other phone data

it's up there with the whole 'twice as fast' ads that don't blantantly say 'provided you in an area with perfect 3g coverage, which almost no one is'

Ahh... but you don't need to take up any space with the OS on the iPhone, Mac (or any computer, for that matter)... unless, of course, you want to use it for something other than a door stop!

Stop this silliness!

...Analysts have suggested that Apple could feasibly sell the iPhone for $99. ...

This statement is correct and they could also feasibly build a laser guided breakfast bazooka that launches hot pockets into balmer's pie hole from a 500 mile range.

Maybe a bit harsh and I'm not going to wipe the $99 4G 3G iPhone rumor off the plate given that anything could happen given the state of the economic crisis, but clearly this implies that Apple would become a price leader in the smart phone market.

I'll re-emphasize... Apple would become a price leader ...

Yeah. $99 iPhone? From Apple? Not happening anytime soon. Apple doesn't sell junk. Their products will always be expensive. Dont expect this unless you want a let-down. ;)

Your right. My girlfriend's moms sister dated this guy who knew another guy who was dated this girl who's dad worked for walmart and they all said this rumor is true. Confirmed.

While I doubt this because of the precedent it would create...

I see no reason why it wouldn't be feasible.

Walmart as a lone retailer for an inexpensive iPhone is like having a 900lb. gorilla in the room with an iPhone sandwich board. I could see as a business opportunity having Walmart conjoin with Apple for a specific, low end, product. Instant ka-ching!

The 4GB iPhone is awesome. Wish I had one. Bet a lot of people do. So there are giant sized products out there for $500? So what. Most people probably never will use all 4GB unless they cling to masses of video. 3 GB of audio is practically endless, and if you work it with iTunes it's all you ever need.

Why do we assume that walmart will be the only source for the $99 iPhone?

I have no information from anywhere, but I'm betting Apple will unveil a 32GB iPhone at Macworld and drop the 8GB to $99. I don't see them unveiling a unit with LESS storage. When has Apple ever done that? Each iPod line has always increased its storage as far as I can remember.

Don't forget that Apple killed the 4GB model because it wasn't selling nearly as well as the 8GB.

As far as Wal-Mart or Walmart* selling it, I ain't gunna buy no stinkin' phone from them. I'll stick with my present choices of Apple, AT&T, and Best Buy. I don't have to take a shower after buying anything from those companies.

No thanks. I don't support Wal-Mart.

Good man (or woman as the case may be)

Apple has really been associating with some sub-par companies of late. First ATT and now Walmart. What's next? Condoning waterboarding, endorsing the use of sweat shops (like Walmart), sponsoring dog and rooster fights...

Its ironic that as Apple is paying big money to advertise its products as green, its partnering with un-green companies like Walmart to peddle its phone. I guess its just a slogan...

Gross. No thanks. If Wal-Mart can make it work for them, then somebody somewhere is getting the short end of the stick. I love my Macs but I think Apple are really getting off-track from being a progressive company if this is true (which it very well might not be).

Well, they're free in the UK on a £45 or £75 tariff...

That depends on if you consider the last classic release to be a drop from 160GB to 120GB or an increase from 80GB to 120GB.

Ya' know...

A lot of these comments remind me of the guy who looks at the glass as being half empty, then complains when he is offered the same amount in a smaller glass!

If anything, Wal-Mart is a very green company. It helps the poor, both with jobs when they wouldn't get one anywhere else, and by providing low prices to help those who have little money. It thus helps the poor get richer. And the rich are the only ones who can afford to inconvenience themselves to help the environment.

As a capitalist, I support Wal-mart. Those who hate capitalism are free to shop elsewhere -- and pay more. Oh wait - without capitalism you can't shop at all.

Good point, but I consider that ditching the more expensive model since the 120GB is sold at the same price as the 80GB. So there is at least a smidge of precedent, but I'm still wagering on an 8GB model at $99. A storage bump across the line at the same price point (plus a $99 model) would probably boost sales even more than the last price cut + 3G.

Agreed(ish). I'm sick and tired of Apple using RAM as a delineating factor in the massive price differences between models. iPod Touchs (or Touches?) and iPhones are both very different in price just because of a few Gbs of RAM.
but this is the same apple that sell desktop and laptop ram 5-6x more than the street price. the funny thing people actually buy them from apple.

I would buy a 4GB for $100 if it was unlocked. Wouldn't need to be G3 as I would likely rely on Wi-Fi zones (no Data or Minimum) and use it as an IPOD + Phone so I wouldn't have to carry around two devices.

Except for the recent disappearance of the 160GB iPod classic in favor of the 120GB model. Also the discontinuing of the iPod mini in favor of the flash based (lower capacity) Nano.

I've been a long time lurker on these forums (way before my join date even) and I must say this is one of the worst threads I've read on MR in a while.

It's great that Apple and the iPhone are doing so well, but I think we're attracting the IGN crowd here.

Still have tons of respect for Arn.

Looks fake to me. The Walmart logo looks cloned on to the page, as its background is a different shade of white than the rest of the page.

I think what you're seeing are compression artifacts from an over-compressed JPEG image. It looks legit to me.

And what's up with all the stereotypes regarding wal-mart shoppers? One poster generalized in saying that wal-mart shoppers have never heard of blu-ray... seriously? Another (it might have been the same person) said they feel like they have to take a shower after leaving the store... Oh the drama! Get off your high horse.

I think wal-mart selling iPhones is great for Apple, great for wal-mart, and great for consumers. Now, if only Apple could implement the most basic of features... Picture messaging, copy & paste, to-do lists, stereo bluetooth, flash, removable memory, replaceable battery, voice dialing, etc.

I think this is a great thing for the iPhone. Some people still consider $199 too expensive and now a $99 model will insure that anyone can have one.

Plus, I like Wal-Mart. I do allot of Christmas shopping there. They should have arranged this to start before Christmas.
