Let's take Apple out of the mix... no iPhone 6... no proprietary Apple retail hardware... nothing.

So when will this NFC "standard" take off? Where is it?

Someone earlier mentioned that they paid with Google Wallet at Walgreens... but even Walgreens employees don't know about it.

I don't think most people know about it.

So what's going on with it?

Don't you think it will be weird if NFC was available for years and no retailer wanted it... but they jump on Apple's implementation on day-one?

That's kinda how I envision all this happening.

This is exactly it. Android people keep talking about how Apple is late to the game, yet most of the general public have never even heard of NFC. After next weeks event, there's not going to be many people who DON'T know what NFC is.

I just have the feeling that they are hitting the wrong demographic for this type of thing.

Whole foods, Costco, Neiman Marcus, etc... That's where I see this thriving.

While I hear you, I must say that in my travels I'm around millionaire CEOs and people in the projects. Somehow everyone has a new iphone. And it's usually the CEOs who are still on a 4 or 4s.

Maybe I shop in different places than you do. The last time I had trouble with a credit card not working they pulled out the old imprint machine. It takes a few minutes, but it sure beat having to pump all that gas back out of my truck.

The last time I had that experience, a couple of months ago, it was in an Apple store and they managed to produce an imprinting machine.

I can only speak for how it is working in Sweden since that's where i'm from.
All credit cards i have seen has a chip.
All stores uses chip, i haven't swiped a card in over 2 years let alone an imprinting machine (i think it has been more then 20 years since i saw one).
All restaurants etc. uses portable devices for card payment (which also uses chip).
I mean, even bars usually have mounted card readers on the desk.

Are people really swiping cards any longer considering risk of fishing?

Also it is quite common with terminals that have some sort of wireless interface on the side of it, but i have never seen anyone use it.

It won't matter, Google Wallet really has not taken off.

Android's NFC solutions is actually gaining more and more support but I honestly don't see any of this stuff taking off until more retailers accept it in the US, which I think is supposed to really start happening in late 2015. (I could be wrong)

The big question is how will Apple's solution differ from Android's, if at all. Apple's marketing power will be greatly increase awareness too. Perhaps Apple will start selling NFC enabled terminals to stores.

This looks like it'll be another US ONLY feature. Canada was promised to get iTunesRadio in "early 2014". Still got nothing.

Canada, like Europe, is more geared up for this than the US. Over here in the UK, every major retailer and nearly all the little ones that accept credit cards now accept contactless payment. And pretty much every credit card has a contactless chip built in, too. I understand the situation is similar in Canada.

Whatever Apple is creating, it'll have to be out-of-the-box compatible with all that contactless payment hardware already in place, or it's dead on arrival.

As such, I can't see the issue in launching what is essentially a hardware feature across the world for anyone in a country with the infrastructure to use it.

Wierd that they have to go to individual retails. Hopefully this is just the backward americian banking system. My hope is that in EU/AUS/etc. that they will just work as existing visa/mastercard NFC cards do.

I don't think they really need to. Walgreens and CVS already support NFC payments and so they should support Apple's version just by default. I believe more retailers are supposed to be supporting them in the next year or so.

My problem with this is that until every single place I use has this is place, I am still going to have to carry my credit card.
So then I begin to think what's the point?

Don't worry, the reality distortion field next tuesday will set you right.

So if you are linking your major credit card wouldn't they be providing shops etc with equipment? What is the point if partnering with the individual retailers?

Has there been any talk about people with multiple *gasp* cards?

I have one for work purchases, one for my account, and one for Mrs. Thequick's account.

I know it's easy to do, but I just haven't seen that aspect of the "wave to pay" system that is being talked about.

The point is that there is adoption by phases...

First, the major companies buy into this, since if it works, it's a boon for them, and if it doesn't, it's a small loss (as a matter of percentage of revenue).

Second, people become familiar and trusting with the new technology, and start preferring it over their current way of doing things. (customer buy-in).

Third, the wave of new and smaller businesses buys into it, as the cost of the technology to do this outweighs the cost of not doing it (and the price goes down).

It would be a tougher sell if, on September 9, at 12pm, CVS and Walgreens no longer took credit cards, but only the new form of payment.

Wow...good for you using Google wallet in a few stores out of 100 millions stores...Apple is never too late. They just enter the market when it's mature, not like Google and others....one example: Google Glass-good device + wrong time = DOA. Samsung Gear- first on market + half bake = sh.t sale.

You're right, Apple is just riding along while Google is creating the market. Concact-less payment will be nation wide implemented summer 2015 in my country, regardless if Apple has NFC or not, like most of the rest of the developed world NFC is comming, no thanks to Apple.

There needs to be a common payment strategy like we have for visa/ mc etc, and debit payment systems. This fragmented agreements for a few retailers isn't going to work.

Ultimately it willbe up to credit card companies and banks ( debit cards ) to integrate NFC payments into their payment systems - releasing apps for smartphones. Not Apple doing this on its own, and Google, another method.

Soon all of the "My Wallet is Ready" memes posted whenever a new iPhone comes out will have to be updated to "My (old) Phone is Ready"

I am really looking forward to the elimination of the wallet! I've already stopped using cash and carry only a card holder. I do keep a folded up $20 with the cards for absolute emergency. But I can't believe how many cards I now have to carry. I'm hoping that eventually states/governments can issue digital driver's licenses and that public transport NFC cards and the like can be stored on our phones. Next step is cars that don't need keys. Home door keys can already be eliminated.

My check list for leaving the house each morning is Work ID Badge, Card Wallet, Keys, & Phone. Would love for that to just be my phone!

Seeing as how walgreens and cvs do have a large share of healthcare insurance/drug prescription market. It is a smart move by Apple to partner with them. This will be sure to make health kit work even better.

Google does not have anything to do with it either.

I have an Android (HTC One) and an iPhone (weird that way). I've been using Google Wallet at Walgreens for several months to pay. When it works, it's cool and always gets the cashiers all impressed. But for some reason often it doesn't work -- even with the stupid blue light on the paywave thing glowing, so I sit there tapping my phone on the thing looking like a dumb ass while my phone is saying it's not working, until I finally give up and swipe my credit card. Then the cashier tells me "Oh that never works" and I'm like "I've used it before -- oh whatever, never mind."

This NFC benefit though will really take off when chipped credit cards take over because they take longer than swiping. You have to insert your card into the slot and wait a few seconds until it processes. It's not a case of swipe and stick it back into your wallet right away. So tap and go will be nice -- if it works reliably.

I Tap & Go NOW with my credit card - and have for months - ALL purchases - so far, it looks like Apple will only have limited exposure with NFC.

If Apple were truly socially minded, they would provide a facility for leaving a tip to people in the service sector....
