Only an evil corporation would make something that would want you to throw your money away in excitement for something that is so convenient. We are sheep to the global corporation take over . We can't wait to use our iPhones n glee to stuff more green down the fat cats throats. What is so wonderful about Apple pay? Nothing for the consumer.

I would have liked to see the rest of that message because I suspect they won't have to do anything special to enable Apple Pay but the instructions for readiness are more for the staff to be able to assist the customer in using their phone with the tills as they'll be new to using Apple Pay.

I still think Transport for London in the UK has one of the most innovative uses of NFC at the moment.

You don't need to use a separate ticket or card anymore, you simply tap your contactless credit card on the ticket barrier when you enter the station and again when you exit, it then calculates the total fare for the day based on how much you travel. Discounts are automatic, in other words if you've travelled enough your total travel cost will be capped to the cost of a day or weekly ticket. There's no need to plan in advance it's always the cheapest available fare.

Unfortunately this might not work out the box with Apple Pay because Apple Pay will generate a different identifier and in this instance Transport for London need to get the same identifier each time to calculate the best fare. If the ID changes the passenger will get charged the maximum fare for each journey by using Apple Pay.

I hope Transport for London and Apple work out a solution for this.

It's great living in London, I just need my one contactless credit card for both travel and purchases. No need even for a ticket. Most of our Taxis take contactless directly too, or you can use an app that takes the payment automatically.

Macy's is definitely a partner for the US launch (as is Bloomingdales). I'd be surprised if Starbucks isn't along soon as they take NFC payments in all their UK stores.

Definitely get this at Costco

I noticed a few months ago Costco started carrying the iPhones and iPads again. I know there was a falling out between the two years earlier, but I'm glad to see my favorite big box selling Apple products again.

Now, would they be able to pull Apple Pay off without ticking off their current banking-credit card carrier, American Express? Perhaps the two could co-exist. I would think this could work based upon how many people are so attached to their iPhones & don't have an AmEx card; this could be huge for Costco.

Any ideas, opinions or predictions?

I'm pretty sure Walgreens has been NFC enabled for a while now. I thought Apple Pay didn't require any changes at the merchant end?

It doesn't require any changes to the card readers that already support NFC.

It's priceless to look right at the cashier right as she scans them..lol

But anyway... it would be nice to see it at gas stations.

I guarantee that the second gas stations have pay at the pump with your iphone service, someone will start re-spreading the "don't use your iphones at the pump!!!! The phone's signal will ignite the gas fumes and explode" facebook rumor.

NFC != ApplePay

No, but Apple Pay uses NFC in the same was as Google Wallet and ISIS (or whatever it is called now). How Apple Pay works on the backend with regards to tokenization does not matter to the merchant. They just have to support NFC payments.

you are just pissed that it will be more difficult to scam credit card/debit card numbers from those dumb sheep you are so worried about....

Wait, I thought NFC was contactless technology. Why do you have to tap?

You barely make contact. I've been using this technology for the last couple of years on Nexus devices (and I'm not trying to start an Android vs. iOS debate...we own several Apple products in my company and personally).

At Walgreen's during checkout, you put in your phone number for your rewards card per usual, the clerk rings everything up and then when they've completed the process the blue pad lights up. You bump your phone (barely touching the pad), and you'll know it picked it up as your phone will make a "dinging" sound...at least on Android it does. The clerk may give you a "how in the heck did you do that?" statment, hands you the receipt, and you're out.

Right but I thought there would be atleast 1 documented case that has concluded such but there isn't.

I believe gas pumps would get just as much use as any other place.

I've always wondered who shopped at Walgreens ... hmmm ... same teenagers as hang out on the MR forums.

They're convenient because they're everywhere. I have 3 Walgreens and 1 CVS closer to me than the nearest Target, and I'm only 3 miles from the nearest Target.

If in the morning I realize I'm running low on toothpaste, shaving cream, deodorant, or whatever, odds are, I'm going to drive past a Walgreens sometime later that day so I can stop in and pick some up.

Of course, that convenience comes at a cost because their prices are a lot higher than Target. But I go there when I don't feel like going out of the way to Target or dealing with long lines and crowds. Especially around the holidays.

I agree. I'd use it in a second. Well, only when I travel. I live in NJ so I don't get out of my car at home.

I will now officially drive through that one extra traffic light to get to Walgreens, sorry Rite-Aid

Bank of America suggests to "Wave" not "Tap"

Which is cool as ill be carrying it naked.

(Without a case)

Hmm, I use Walgreens for all my scripts so I have a Walgreens card. Currently you have to either wave your Walgreens card or enter your phone number and press lookup. Then swipe your card, then press the cash back option, then press the 'do I want to donate to XXX cause, then press is this amount ok. So I wonder if Apple pay will eliminate any of these steps? If not then it's not really easier.

I love Walgreens because they are everywhere and I have had the need to use one in different cities in the past. But their pay system is a real mess as it is. It will be interesting to find out. Frankly I don't have an iPhone (I have a nokia 920) but if using Apple Pay streamlines Walgreens that would almost be enough to make me buy a new phone!

This is what sets Apple apart from other tech companies. They are coordinated and when they set their minds to it, they can get something implemented quickly and correctly.

Too bad they couldn't do it with iOS 8.

Macys will accept Apple Pay. Costco only cash, debit card, or American Express but I've never paid attention to whether they have NFC. As they won't let you use credit cards unless Am Ex and don't give you bags for your purchases I don't know if they'll be early adopters unless they already have NFC equipment .

Yes, I always go to RiteAid even though †here's a CVS and a Walgreen's just as close. I will go to Walgreen's at least once now to try Apple Pay. I'll stay if their prices are good. I tried Walgreen;s twice when one was built near me but prices were higher than Rite Aid back then. I guess I'll see soon.

You'll be able to leave the store faster than ever, and no need to buy other decoys to pass the condoms unnoticed.

Well if that's the way you feel, I would suggest that at least once, at a Walgreens far from home where nobody is going to ever see you again, just buy a box of condoms and make a really big ridiculous deal about it. Just pick up the box and yell "Hey everyone! I'm buying condoms because I plan to have SEX!" and have that be the only thing you buy and proudly say to the cashier "One box of condoms, please!"

Just see if that changes anything for you. For no other reason than it'd make me laugh.
