Trust me, I hope they make one with a retina screen, but I just don't think people wouldn't buy them without one.
I've held off the first two iterations because both panels look like you're viewing the content through a screen door. If the iPad 3 doesn't up the resolution, I won't buy that one either.

Not saying that it's of major importance for everyone, just saying that contrary to your musings, there are absolutely people who won't buy them until they address the issue. I highly doubt I'm the only one.

Apple MUST put a retina display in the next generation iPad. Not because it's necessary, but because otherwise people will be disappointed if the iPad 3 does NOT have a retina display.

I'm not saying there won't be a retina displaying but Apple regularly disappoints their customers. They aren't too concerned about that.

Does anyone know where 9.7" came from?

7" or 8" or 9" or 10"

Why did they sit down and think, yeah, 9.7" is ideal.
9.8" a bit too big, 9.6" a bit too small.

There must be some reason they did not just go with 10" it sounds so much better then 9.7"

That sounds just about right.

Still a good half-year before ipad3; shouldn't stop most people from considering an ipad2 if they are already looking for a tablet.

Besides the obvious screen upgrade to "retina"... I'm hoping they do what they did with the iPhone 4 retina screen and attach the screen to the glass. IMO, it's almost as big as a deal as the resolution difference. Looks MUCH cleaner... the iPad 2 screen looks recessed.

Maybe because the tablet itself is about 10"; so the screen is a bit smaller.

I don't think anyone had any doubts Apple was working on an iPad 3, the doubts I had were that was coming in 2011. I Fully expect to see a high res iPad 3 by March-June of next year.

Just bought used iPad 2 on eBay. Love it! I will sell this one when new one comes out. It would be nice if they do a 4G chip in it!!

and I was thinking of purchasing an iPad 2 this weekend...

i skipped ipad 2 simple because it had no retina

----------

...I'm still undecided whether it's an essential item or a mere trinket, albeit an undeniably cool one.

not essential.. i only have ipad 1 cause it was free.. its s toy and very nice one but just a toy as new mac book air is a much better purchase.

----------

Bad timing, this is only going to slow Christmas sales of iPad 2s. Either launch prior to Christmas or well after.

no it wont.. ipad 2s are the hottest gift this xmas..

I guess that I'll have to file it under the same category of the iPhone. Somewhat overpriced and under-technologied without a distinct use.

^^^you lost me there... and you call your self and apple fan and thats how you see the iphone which is the greatest -phone of all time..lol

----------

I there is no retina display Apple i will be very  also very

and as i still own the Ipad 1 and have yet to upgrade to 2 because 3 will blown me away  and with RD it will put a:) on my face and so that i do this to all the android trolls :apple: for life as i carry my ipad3 around :D

^^^yup no retina would be ipad suicide...lol

----------

Holy smiley faces batman.

I really dont think the average purchaser of an ipad would really know the difference between the two screens and would buy one regardless.

yes they will its like 3gs screen vs iphone 4 screen cloudy night vs sunny day

I just sold my MBA for iPad 2 with no regrets. I see how it can be a toy for some, but I disagree that's all it is. I have an iMac at home and didn't see the advantages of the macbook air. It was fast, light and sexy, but was over kill for me. It really depends on what your needs are. Hands down it was the best laptop I've had, but I found myself not utilizing apps and hd.
I do all my projects (music, video, photos, etc) on iMac and Calendar, Contacts, Mail and Safari can all be done well on iPad. I picked up Quickoffice Pro HD to handle the light document editing I need when I travel.

I original chose the Air because I thought I needed more but didn't. I'm sure there are a lot of people out there they may need what the laptop provides. There is no right or wrong here. Just need to evaluate needs.

...And why does MacRumors use a picture of the 1st Gen iPad for this story? That is actually funny.

cause its still cool as hell and has the same screen as ipad 2...lol:):)

ipad 2 screen looks like ipad 1 screen

once the 3 comes out with the retina, the 2's are going to seem very dated

nope they will be more affordable and desired like 3gs iphones are still selling..

Third revision and I still don't have a use for it.

We're (gf and I) diehard Apple people (five iPods, a Blackbook, a unibody MacBook, a 11" MacBookAir, a 2g ATV, and an iMac) and I still don't know what to do with an iPad. I can't really use it as a portable workstation because the input is too clumsy for documents, it doesn't read well compared to eInk and it's too big to be really portable without having to carry it (i.e. can't slide into my pocket like my iPod touch).

I guess that I'll have to file it under the same category of the iPhone. Somewhat overpriced and under-technologied without a distinct use.

Believe, me I'd love to buy one, but I just can't justify it if it's only for entertainment, as I'd rather spend money on something that would be more entertaining.

Excellent replacement for a magazine/newspaper for when you go for a number 2!

i'm gonna predict an iPad 4 for 2013 AND its gonna be better than iPad 1-3, i have reliable sources in the business

And yet there are those of us who use their iPad every day. I've had one for about a year now and I find tablet computing very good for my uses. I read papers on the Subway on the way to work and catch a video on the way home to unwind. For email at home it is a nice alternative between checking iPhone and going to the desktop. Not a necessary alternative, but it sometimes is the right tool (i.e., when someone sends me an attachment and I want to skim it without necessarily starting any real work on it).

2012 is the year of the iPad3.

retina will help topple the competition.
they don't need it but expected by now.

If anyone thinks the same pricing will apply they will be in for a rude awakening.

The iPad 2 will still be available.

This will be dubbed the iPad Pro and cost a couple hundred more.

Don't believe me ? Just think about it: As it is right now the iPad 2(Love it or Hate it) has NO REAL COMPETITION !

Why would they stop selling that model for the price they have been ?

A lot of you are going to have a Whole new thread of Bitching when you see the price.......But I'll bet you all will still buy it and we will see yet another record first quarter.

You heard it here first :)

I'd expect the low-end Retina iPad 3 (16GB without 3G) to cost at least as much as the high-end iPad 2 (64GB with 3G). I mean, I'd love to see the Retina version to replace the current product line at the same price level, but let's be realistic here: That's just not possible.

Then you don't follow Apple very much. They normally keep prices the same, and introduce new features. Technology gets cheaper as time passes. How were they able to make the iPad 2 at the same price as the iPad, when they included 2 cameras, a much faster A5 processor, and made it 33% thinner? Same price as the older one. Magic, or simply the price of everything getting cheaper?

You seriously expect the base 16GB iPad 3 to be MORE THAN $829? Not being rude, but are you new to computers?

It would be highly surprising to discover that at Apple they are *NOT* working on iPad 3.

That will be a great present for me this New Year :p

Nor did the article state simply that they were. Rather, it stated a screen resolution and an approximate release date.
