The WSJ notes that reliability and ease of use are key and will be essential for widespread public adoption. The iPhone 5S will, by far, be the most high-profile consumer electronics device with a fingerprint scanner. Apple purchased fingerprint sensor company AuthenTec in July 2012 for $356 million.

To add to that, top notch security needs to be incorporated into this technology. Meaning, the sensor cannot be easily defeated by trickery and well known methods that work against so many other sensor devices.

I'm confident that the security experts and bad guys alike are going to go to work on this as soon as they can. If Apple hasn't made this bulletproof, they're going to have their biggest bomb in a long time.

I hope, for Apples sake and those who will use the new sensor, that this will be robust and successful.

I think Apple could also expand this to the Mac. Imagine having an iPhone and a Mac. You get to a page where a Credit Card/login is required so click a button for AirLock (or whatever they decide to call this feature), an alert opens on your iPhone, you scan your fingerprint on the phone and BOOM, your Credit Card info/username and password is entered into the page.

While I must admit that I really look forward to it, I am pretty disappointed if Apple doesn´t have any more surprises for us up their sleeves.

But when do they ever have other surprises up their sleeves? The iPhone 4S didn't really have surprises. Neither did the 5 and neither did the 3GS or 3G.

The only surprise was the iPhone 4 with the Retina Display and redesigned body. I know the whole bar situation, but still.

There really won't be any "surprises" unless they come out with an entirely new product.

If it has the same design as the iPhone 5 the battery can't be enlarged a lot. So this is not really going to happen.

Clearly your argument isn't valid. Going from my MacBook Air 2012 to my MacBook air 2013 I went from 3.5 hours to 8.5 hours of battery.

Clearly you're wrong.

How does the new MacBook Air have an increased 5 hours of battery life with the same size and internals as the previous MacBook Air?

Um, first of all, it's already confirmed that the battery is slightly larger because Apple managed to reduce the size of the logic board. Second of all, just through power optimizations in the A7 processor they could improve battery life. Which is what they did in the A6, in the new MB Airs, and more than likely the 5S tomorrow.

now samasung will make 4.7 inch wide fingersprint scanners to scan all fingers at once and say its better because its more secure.

I just hope that the fingerprint sensor is also on the new iPad and we can finally get some multi-user aspects to iOS on the iPad.

I don't really want my kids reading my e-mail, but I also don't want to put a code on the iPad overall....

So how do you waterproof a port and the earphone hole? Yeah by a cover attached to the phone... and this is totally not Apple!

No, you waterproof all of the internal components.
Something that's already been done so Apple will wait until they can buy the company that currently does it.

But why do they constantly have to come up with "surprises?" What's wrong with just making a better iPhone? Don't come on rumor sites and then complain about a lack of surprise. The logic is just bass ackwards. If rumor sites didnt dig through the supply chain for any piece of info they could get, then the gold color option and the new capacitive fingerprint tech (not the old swipe technology) would both have been pretty surprising. Especially the champagne color, that rumor came out a while ago and most dismissed it entirely until recent leaks.

This is awesome news if true. I think people are sleeping on what an accurate fingerprint sensor means in a mobile device.

Funny you say "sleeping" because as my friend pointed out "what's gonna stop your suspicious girlfriend from unlocking your phone while you sleep?"
Hopefully you'll be able to have some kind of two-factor authentication....

My question is when will the 5S start shipping. I would think the fingerprint scanner needs iOS 7 to function unless they release an update for 6.
I am hearing iOS 7 will go GM tomorrow but not be released until later this month.

Improved battery life? Not worth mentioning when it's only by 10%

I would beg to differ on that. If, for instance, certain activities with my wife lasted 10% longer, I would say that would be significant and to use your words---worth mentioning.
