Support for Apple Account Cards in the Wallet app has gone live in Canada and Australia, over two years since it first launched in the United States.

apple-account-card-feature.jpg

The change means users can use the Wallet app to add an Apple Account Card, which displays the Apple credit balance associated with an Apple ID. If you receive an App Store or Apple Store gift card, for example, it is added to an Apple Account that was previously visible in the ‌App Store‌ and ‌Apple Store‌ apps.

Support for the feature in Canada and Australia requires iPhone users updating to iOS 17.6, as spotted by Nicolás Álvarez. Prior to today, support for the feature was thought to be limited to Japan and the US.

To add an Apple Account Card, open up the Wallet app and under "Available Cards," tap on "Add Apple Account." As long as you have an Apple Account balance, you'll be able to add the card.

Once added, you can view your Apple Account balance right from the Wallet app and use it to purchase Apple products, apps, games, and music. It works in the same way as any other card in the Wallet app when at an ‌Apple Store‌. The Apple Account Card replaces the iTunes Pass that used to be available a long time ago.

That’s great that Apple has made this feature available to more countries

In the past, Apple has offered a 10% bonus when you reload your Apple ID with additional funds:

I have the Apple Card which offers 3% cash back on all Apple purchases however, I rarely use that for Apple purchases as I instead purchase Apple gift cards from Target.com using my Target 🎯 RedCard (and I’m able to save 5% instantly at checkout) which beats the 3% offered from the Apple Card

I’m glad that Apple finally combined iTunes gift card balances with their regular Apple online store so that customers can use funds on both places (as well as in their physical Apple Stores)

I’m planning on buying my new iPad a week from this Saturday and I’m going to be using my Apple ID account balance to purchase it from the Apple online store (on our tax free holiday here in Massachusetts)

Hopefully Apple continues to roll this feature out to additional countries as well as occasionally offer promotions on funds that are reloaded to Apple ID balances (by giving a 10% bonus, etc)

Can we pay each other with this?
You can’t pay people with the Apple account balance but Apple has a feature that works exactly for the purpose of sending cash to other people and iOS 18 even makes it as easy as tapping the other person’s iPhone:

Can anyone elaborate on how this is different from Apple Cash? I know in the US you can send people Apple Cash via iMessage. It seems like this functionality is still not available in Canada, even with the release of the Apple Account Card.

I guess the benefits are if you want to set a monthly budget for your subscriptions, on the go purchases like coffee, takeout, etc?

Cheers

Deals like those (Apple Pay, Apple Account Card, and obviously Apple Card) are limited to the US. I have never seen a deal related to Apple Pay or the Apple Account Card for Germany or Europe. So I doubt there will be any for Canada or Australia.

Maybe I'd use this over Christmas for myself is my guess? I suppose it saves a step going to the Apple Store app. Just attempted to add, and denied because I modified my region to US so I can try the 18.1 dev beta with AI, so likely in another waiting game for 18.1, and AI support in Canada (I suppose it needs to be trained to account for superfluous extra 'u's in language).

Finally! Just added mine. I don’t understand why it took over 2 years to bring it up here to Canada. It’s not like partnering with another bank to bring Apple Card. Better late then never, but it’s also sad that it takes Apple forever to roll out basic features like Apple Wallet features (especially IDs which have just reached their fifth US state after three years), languages in the Translate app (only a couple dozen after four or so years), Apple Maps features, etc. I have a love/hate relationship with Apple, but the fact that Apple takes forever to roll out basic features is beyond frustrating

Note: You cannot get this card if you have different accounts being used for the App Store and iCloud.
Same issue here.

I tried to make a purchase in the Apple Store last month and they asked me to follow this exact process to add my account balance to my wallet. Now that is actually available in Canada, it doesn't work for legacy iTunes split accounts.

too many features to keep track of. I didn't even know US had this.

I have a bug in the Mac app store app that shows a different balance than the actual balance.

Thanks for the info! Frankly, this penalizes those who paid for iCloud when it was a $129 / $99 per year service and required an iCloud account separate from one's normal Apple ID. That was my case so to this day I maintain separate accounts for iCloud syncing versus App Store and media purchases, and I believe Apple still doesn't offer any sort of account merging feature.

Hmm, this isn't working for me. But it could be that my Apple ID location is US but my phone location is Canada...
