Last weekend I went to the local chain grocery store, same distance from my house as WalMart. While I was there, they announced they were now accepting Apple Pay. They also had everything on my grocery list, and weren't filled with "people of WalMart."

Buhbye WalMart.

Please don't make fun of Walmart, and the people who shop there.

It's the perfect store if you're looking to decorate your trailer.

It seems like swiping a credit card would be faster than this.
And that there's more security in just using old fashioned greenbacks, rather than having all your info being tossed around as a data point between heaven knows who and for how long.

I find Apple Pay to be super fast. But I agree on going back to cash.

After the Home Depot issue, I've started using more cash.

What are our choices? I say, let them know that consumers, not merchants will decide!

Go to these big box stores that don't take Apple\Sammy Pay, and take some large ticket items to the checkout. Never mind if you have no intention of actually buying the items, just make sure it is big enough to get their attention. When it comes time to pay, ask if they take Apple or Sammy Pay. When they say no, simply walk away (and leave your purchase there for them to re-stock).

It won't take long for merchants to realize they have no choice but to accept Apple\SammyPay or watch their sales walk out the door.

So what's special about this system, then? They may as well just have used ApplePay and other NFC systems and saved themselves the cost of developing and maintaining a proprietary system if they're so concerned with transaction fees. Makes no sense to me.
Every pay system is a proprietary system. There is no open standards for it. From Walmart point of view, it's less infrastructure problem if they just accept using their own app. You don't always have to think from Apple or Google perspective. From a business point of view, it makes sense for them. We are only seeing what Apple says to us about the charges. May be there is something hidden that we don't know which is why everybody is coming out with their own pay. Companies like Walmart can do that because they have a huge software development department and they can afford to do such.

That won't work because consumers will choose ApplePay for it's ease of use and then where does that leave WalmartPay? See they are thinking ahead with this ;)

Exactly, shows they aren't quite as confident in their product as they make out!

Oh yea, the simplicity of an app for every store. And I really want Walmart to have my credit card info saved on their servers.
Sadly, I bet most of they save are EBT cards. Surprised that Walmart hasn't tried to get mandated as the welfare go to store for Obamanation.

That thing you're thinking of that these pay systems lack is collecting massive amounts of data on us. Walmart wants that for whatever reason (same as the currentc people) because all apple / google / samsung pay usually gives them is a token that in no way identifies who you are.

Seems like it would just make it hard on people who have no control over what payments their employer accepts.. I think simply using Apple Pay wherever its accepted would send a clearer message.

But yeah, the Wal-Mart pay system seems overly complicated. It's like releasing sneakers as a competitor to a vehicle.

Alright.. let's assume that they want all that data and apple pay is not going to give them that. So who is losing out? Merchant or Apple Pay? Apple Pay will only be successful if all the merchants accept it. Otherwise it's a failure. The reason Apple does not have the command over the negotiation as the alternatives are already there like swiping cards or paying cash. Unless the card issuers force the merchants to use Apple Pay, I don't think Apple Pay will progress that much.

There should be a regulation that says all of these mobile payment options can happily compete with each other for consumer interest, but stores should not be allowed to block the consumer from using their mobile payment of choice because it's the competition.

If I or someone else chooses to use Apple Pay for my currency, Wal-Mart shouldn't be allowed to not support it just because they have their own solution. Same thing the other way around.

except, doesnt samsung pay work with any card reader?

I downloaded the Walmart app to setup for a trail run. Unfortunately I can't log in with my Walmart.com account, and the find store part of the app is reporting that the Walmart site is down for maintenance. Not looking good so far.

BTW, I was in Boston for a 3 day business trip and paid for my taxi trips using Apple Pay via my Apple Watch.

Just like I don't want an app for every website I visit, I don't want an app for every store I wish to buy stuff from. Greed. In a perfect world, there would be one OPEN solution that would work for everyone. But the world IS NOT perfect. Create one standard, then let any company create an app based on that standard, but let every app using the standard work.

Just like how streaming media is broken these days. Need subs to a dozen companies. That's work. You are better off just letting Comcast bully you, at least that's just one company vs twelve.

There is seriously so much hate going on here. I get it, Apple Pay is cool, and I love using it. But competition is good, and Apple Pay has to prove why it should be out there through customer demand. Starbucks has their own payment system as well, and it's neat to use and the benefits are clear. If Walmart can come up with a loyalty program where Apple Pay would have not, then good for them.

Are they for real....?? By the the time I'm done fiddling with stores app and paying, wouldn't it be easier to just swipe my card, hit Yes, and sign => Done!.......... or a my missing something here?????

Yep, they announced a system whereby you can pay and have all your purchases and personal information correlated and tracked. That's why merchants hate Apple Pay - because they can't spy on us anymore.

Here's the "open" solution (read standard) https://www.emvco.com/specifications.aspx?id=263

Apple pay implements this, so does android pay and to some degree samsung pay, though their solution includes other things I believe.
