If this happens, then the next iPhone will be a game changer, and give the Nexus One a run for its money.
I feel sorry for the people with a lack of knowledge to research a product before they buy an iPhone right now.
As a 3G user, a $99 3GS appeals to me. I don't need to have the latest and greatest, and the speed increase for minimal cost would be nice.
I don't care how cheap the product, I will NEVER shop at Walmart. Anti-christ of all companies.![]()
Taken out of context.. if you're going to quote me then quote me in my entirety. All my friends know that I'm involved with technology daily and they come to me before they buy stuff, so it's only their fault, so I laugh at them in a friendly way.
Apple does give you a choice when they are allowed to. In Hong Kong, Apple has been selling iPhones unlocked out of the box straight from Apple store. In Singapore, even subsidized iPhones are unlocked out of the box, and the 3GS is available on many wireless providers there (not singtel exclusive anymore). Many people outside the US can use iPhone for tethering, officially provided by Apple from OS 3.x. The irony is in the US, Apple is tied down by AT&T that doesn't want to give consumers choice (provider-locked, no tethering). That would give you "choice" - something that the Turtlenecked Overlord would not condone.
Well, they said that, but nobody gives a definite date. I've been asking around, yet even the Android fanboys refused to reveal the date. As of now, you can still buy the N1 from google.com/phoneI guess you missed the news that Google stopped selling their unlocked phone.
If I correctly understand your posts in this thread so far you "feel sorry for the people with a lack of knowledge", so you advise them, and if they don't take your advice you "laugh at them in a friendly way". Did I get that right?
Ah, but ignorance is bliss. Seriously you'd have to have been living under a rock in siberia to have not heard about the 4G capers.

Yesbut the funny thing about it is that it's mostly girls

The US wireless market and consumers "forced" Apple. Remember, Apple was a newbie in the phone business, so to get a jump start of user base, they were practically "forced" to align themselves with one of the carriers (they tried Verizon, rejected, then went to the 2nd largest, AT&T). In the US, the consumers LOVE buying and paying for locked phones from wireless carriers, so Apple wouldn't have done as well if they did an unlocked iPhone straight without partnering with a carrier (ala Nokia/Sony). Apple had to play the game, and bowed down to AT&T. I don't know the specific agreement between Apple & AT&T, but today, Apple have had quite a bit or marketshare, and maybe now they can play a bit harder with AT&T (hope so).i do not live in the USA, so i may have misunderstood this, please correct me if this is the case.
surely in the USA apple entered into this agreement with AT&T, right? your post makes it sound like they were a priori forced to work with AT&T, and forced to work with them exclusively. are you saying that in the usa apple would have been unable to sell the device unlocked and thus give users a choice of carrier? if so: who forced apple into this agreement with AT&T?
I mean look at Android in the US. The only unlocked Android phone is the Nexus One. The rest of them are provider-locked. And this is what supposed to be an "open" OS.
Or you can add a new line before AT&T it's new $325 ETF takes . Pay $97 for new iPhone 3GS with full 12 month warranty.
Cancel line, pay the $175 old ETF. So total cost $97 plus $175 ETF plus $36 activation fee. So including taxes total would be $350 for new ipbone 3GS 16gb not under contract with full 12 month warranty.
Sell your old 3GS which has less than one month of warranty left for at least $350 and up.
You can always re add a new line in 6 months to a other subsidized phone.
I am only suggesting this to still take advantage of the $175 ETF before it increases to $325 June 1st.
This would be my first iPhone launch purchase. I'm going to pay retail for the new one when it's out. If rumors are to be true, and it'll be available shortly after the keynote, will it only be available in apple stores and online? Will AT&T stores have them for no contract purchases? Trying to figure out what I want to do on the 7th, take the entire day off or a long ass lunch break![]()
I'm sure that's what Apple wanted to do (eg. the 1st gen iPhone was discontinued when they released the 3G). However, they realized that in the subsidy market like the US, people want cheap phone, and at the time of 3GS launch, Apple probably thought they wouldn't be able to make the margin they wanted to if they pushed the 3GS to the $99 price point, thus the need to keep the 3G to cover that lower end market.Apple should make it a practice liquidate and discontinue older models when they release a new model. In otherwords, they should have gotten rid of the 3G long ago, and discontinue the 3GS when the next iPhone comes out.
Keep it simple and only have one active line of iPhone (or any product for that matter), so when a consumer buys an _new_ iPhone, ALL features work, no thinking about which features are available on which models.
P.
Here's what I want to see from Apple:
-AT&T-locked subsidized iPhone 3GS 16GB, $99
-AT&T-locked subsidized 4G iPhone 32GB, $199
-AT&T-locked subsidized 4G iPhone 64GB, $299
-Unlocked 4G iPhone 32GB straight from Apple store, $399
-Unlocked 4G iPhone 64GB straight from Apple store, $499
And the 4G iPhone to have at quad-band or 5-band UMTS, supporting both AT&T (850) and T-Mobile (1700) 3G, in addition to 1900/2100 bands. Nokia can do a 5-band UMTS with the N8, so why can't Apple.
If this happens, then the next iPhone will be a game changer, and give the Nexus One a run for its money.
I'd much rather pay $100 more for the not yet released new model. The big money is what you'll be paying for two years worth of at&t. You might has well have the nicest hardware.
