Which retailers are doing that? Have you objected? I know I would. To me, that is like asking for ID when using a debit card.

Shaw's Supermarkets in the Boston area. I have objected and told them this is ludicrous and not how Apple Pay is supposed to work. You are forced to go into the settings of the card in Wallet and provide them the "device number" so they can complete the transaction. Takes longer than just swiping your card.

I sent feedback to Apple Pay support and was told that some retailers are forced to do this based on their POS system and that I should reach out to Shaw's directly.

I really don't know, I'm not from the US, just from reading these forums, I got the impression Walmart was not a place more well off people shopped

People here are spreading FUD. I don't know how the Apple products at Walmart are inferior the ones directly from Apple, or how the Samsung TV's with the exact same model number are not as good as the ones at Best Buy.

There may be some products that are unique to Walmart, but by and large it's the exact same merchandise as many other places just cheaper.

I would love to go to fancy places and spend more for the same products, but I'm allergic to throwing my money away.

I don't want to get into politics and off topic, but the chip card thing is just one of many reasons why. Look at the metric system and healthcare as other examples.

US customary units were redefined as ratios of metric units around 40 years ago, so we in fact do use SI units. We merely do so indirectly.

If you want to complain about anything, I'd say it's the N/2^M fractionalization for tap and die sizing and the like, but even that's not so bad.

Nah -- I'd rather it not self activate like that, or the ability to turn that off in settings... ;)

Why would you care? The screen would shut off in 20 seconds anyways.

Dude, rewind, if they really meant it then they would open more than 2 of their 100 registers with training cashiers.

And they would hire cashiers who don't move like turtles.

Fortunately I do not shop at Walmart. I would not download a separate app for them. It's a waste of space on my phone.

Except I don't want to swipe. Merchants need to get with the 21st century and place duct tape over the mag-stripe reader and only allow chip & contactless transactions.

Right, because the mom and pops deli on 36th and 9th and the small french restaurant on 127th street are all going to deploy a wireless contact terminal tomorrow because Apple and Goggle came out with some silly NFC pay system. Unless you think The Meat Ball Shop is a restaurant and get your breakfast at Dunkin Donuts you will have a card in your wallet for a very long time.

Surprisingly a number of mom and pop shops do support NFC payment - some have it turned off and others just don't realize they have the ability to accept payments. Whenever I go shopping I always look for the NFC symbol. If anything, it's a great conversation starter.

Gotta think deeper than that. If this is successful, then don't be surprised to see it spread to other retailers and eventually get to somebody you like.

I can see Target waiting to pounce on this. Grocery stores as well. If you are a retailer who sells a large quantity of goods, there is a big incentive to still be able to track purchases. Consumers may find this method easy enough (Starbucks customers do it all the time) and the rewards worth adding a debit card to an app. If so, it could slow the acceptance of NFC.

Small mom and pop are more likely to support it as they most likely rent the terminal from the payment processor.

Thinking even farther ahead, retailer-specific apps open the door to stuff like "mobile-only" checkout. As in, being able to scan your items and pay for them without ever dealing with a self-checkout machine or talking to an employee. Get enough people to do that and you can cut your staffing costs in half, if not more. And customers will like it too because it'll save way more time than tapping one's phone to a terminal would.

In general, it is not. While WalMart does not sell upscale stuff they do sell a lot of useful stuff (including iPhones and iPads) and most people do shop there. There are many retailers that fall well below WalMart in terms of pricing and quality.

This is like Netflix vs. TV channels all over again. No one wants to download an app for ever freaking TV channel - this is why Netflix is successful.
The same is true for Apple Pay. No one wants to download an app for every store they shop - this is why Apple Pay is successful.

Apple pay just works tell clerk you want to pay by Debit works every time, if you say you want to pay with your phone using apple pay you get a blank look most times.

NFC terminals are in most stores but a few have them turned off due to the extra few cents it costs the merchent.

once Android pay and Samsung pay join Apple Pay as being available the rest of the stores will have no choice but to eneble NFC payments as the shopping public will demand it.

Walmart will adapt as as customers vote with thier digital wallet choices.

You are wasting money!

Their basic GREAT VALUE food items are usually cheaper than the brands and many
times that product is made in the same factories where the brands get made.

I do know that many people despise WALMART due to the way they treat suppliers
or do business........

But, if you have money to burn:)

Walmart treats their vendors no different than Staples, Amazon, Best buy or Target.
All these companies have compliance groups ensuring vendors adhere to standards that protect product quality and efficiency in getting product from the vendor to the customer.

I agree with Great Value products. Many of those items are on par with brand names.

Assuming you're talking about the US, can we really say Apple Pay is successful? Sure it's a great feature, but it can only be used in a very small percentage of places. I wonder what percentage of AP users are diehard Apple fans who actively seek out the chance to use it and how many haven't bothered using it once the curiosity factor wore off.

I think about customers like my wife. We loaded Apple Pay on her phone. She used it once at a hospital vending machine when she didn't have any change and I told her she could use her phone. But once she realized it only worked at a handful of places she shopped (Subway, Walgreens, etc) it never became a habit. Compare that to the Starbucks app that she uses 5 days a week. As much as she shops and the way her phone is glued to her hand, it seems like she'd be a prime candidate for AP.

Apple Pay missed an opportunity when they didn't include the ability to use MST like Samsung pay. The key to getting AP to be successful is changing spending habits...and that comes from being able to use mobile payments at most/all places, not a select few.

Now Apple finds itself fighting up hill against Samsung pay and various retail pay options instead of being 'the main option.'

OMG just support ApplePay and SamsungPay from a single terminal and be done with it. New technology is supposed to make life easier, not more complicated. Its a F&%king payment method! Talk about about overthinking it. the companies are the mercant, Apple and Samsung offer merchant payment processing. Done. Thats it. Just adopt it. I want to be able to just walk up, tap my device and be done with it. Thats what every consumer on the planet wants. We dont want a different method of payment for every store we shop at. We may as well stick with the plastic if its gonna be this complicated.

No, they don't. They emulate a contactless card payment. That's it. If the merchant supports contactless, and your card supports Apple/Android Pay, it works.

wrong. There are plenty of contactless merchants who don't support ApplePay or SamsungPay. CVS is a prime example.

Oh -- OK, didn't realize you hadn't actually read what I typed .

There seems to be a break in the communication somewhere, I'm not sure what your talking about 'Not reading what you typed' I was agreeing with you.
