After years of holding out, Walmart today announced that it will finally begin accepting tap-to-pay options like Apple Pay in some of its Walmart and Sam's Club stores in the U.S. starting Monday, August 24. The retailer plans to roll out tap-to-pay support to all of its U.S. stores by the end of 2026 and to its gas stations by mid-2027.

"We want customers and members to have choice in how they pay, so they can check out in the way that works best for them," said Walmart, in a press release.

Other major U.S. retailers like The Home Depot, Lowe's, Kroger, and Texas-based grocery store chain H-E-B already reversed course and rolled out tap-to-pay support in recent years, leaving Walmart as one of the most notable remaining holdouts until now.

Before this, Walmart prioritized its own Walmart Pay system that involves scanning a QR code at checkout, but it has finally listened to customer feedback and decided to accept NFC-based tap-to-pay options like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay at its U.S. stores. Tap-to-pay support extends to physical credit and debit cards.

With Apple Pay, launched in 2014, you can simply hold your iPhone or Apple Watch near the payment terminal to pay with a digital version of an eligible credit or debit card stored in the Apple Wallet app. Apple Pay has a lot of privacy protections, including hiding a customer's actual credit card number during the payment process.

Walmart has already accepted Apple Pay in its Canadian stores since 2020.

Goes well with the quarterly earnings statement by Walmart the other day that showed slowing growth. Execs think best way to get more people is give them payment options.

And speaking of bizarre holdouts, now we need Delta to sign a contract with Starlink and all will be right in the world. Blue Origin blowing up the launch site should have been a clear signal to DAL.

"We want customers and members to have choice in how they pay, so they can check out in the way that works best for them," said Walmart...

So then, all these years they've held back from allowing Apple Pay their philosophy was what -- "we could care less if our customers want convenient ways to pay, you'll never get Apple Pay and screw you"?

I wonder what made them change their mind? Everyone assumed that Walmart loved cherished that data they were getting from people’s credit cards 💳 and now with Apple 🍎 Pay that will of course be irrelevant and customers card info will be Private.

Was there a month or two ago and the older-fellow at the checkout was REALLY trying to sell me on Walmart Pay. I know he's just doing the company's bidding and while I politely declined, I knew he was drinking the kool-aid by the gallon when he said "It's the most secure payment method out there".

I stared at him for a second, blinked my eyes and said "Ok..." and then just left. I just couldn't...

Apple, of course, never does marketing 180°s like this. 😂 😉

THANK. GOD. I was so sick of scanning that stupid barcode to pay every time.🙄
Why can't they have true scan-n-go like they put at Sam's Club? At Sam's, the "magic pillars" I exit through makes it so I don't even have to stop for the door person to scan items or my barcode -- just pay in app and walk out. Walmart's scan-n-go is some half-assed solution and I still have to go to a self-checkout to scan a barcode.

The checkout people at the Walmart near my mother in-law will be so happy they no longer have to remind me "can't use your phone" literally every single time I go to pay. 🤣
I use scan and go at Walmart, I'm missing out on that "drama" I feel cheated 🥲
