Update!

I've had a couple of reasonable people contact me since I reworded my ad. I dropped the price to 350 (per the recs of ya'll lovely folks) and I added JB/unlock to the mix.

I've got a guy who offered me 320 for it. I asked him when he could pick it up. :D

Total aside: I unlocked it all by myself. I've JB'ed, but never did an unlock by my lonely before.

Hubby always does those, being the techier and geekier of the two of us.

Go me.

:)

My 9yo daughter was quite excited when I put her SIM into my phone to test it. I had to tell her it wasn't permanent. Ha!

the market decides the price, not you. complaining about low offers is silly, just don't sell it if you aren't getting what you feel its worth.

At least you don't get the persistent low ballers. After replying no, they'll keep answering "Well, this item is 6-months old so I think $78 is fair." Umm no.

I am selling my 32 GB 3GS White iPhone in near perfect condition for 375 and only am getting offers for 350.

I don't know if I should just settle and let go of it for that price now before the prices drop even more.

WHat do you guys think??

I am not messing around with eBay. Plus, if that bid stays close to $400, after all the fees and what not the actual money made drops down lower.

Ughhhh i don't know.

The fees don't cost that much. You'll still probably get around $380 for it after everything is said and done.

$350 isn't a bad price. Keep in mind that I sold my iPhone 3G (16GB, white, unlocked/jailbroken) to someone on Craigslist for $340. I'd leave your ad on there for a week (re-post it every few days) and someone will come through with your price.

It is only $25 difference, so I would take it.

You mentioned reposting...

Do you just delete your ad and then post it again?

I deleted my old ad, and it seemed like even an hour later I would still get an error because the listing was too similar to one I had posted.

How long does it take to clear and post a new one?

Craigslist is annoying, but still better than eBay. I just sold my two year old iPhone 3G and listed it for $225. I got tons of e-mails offering to but it for that or offering other amounts. I didn't see it since I thought my friends co-worker was interested. When that fell through, I listed it again, but this time at $240. Not as many responses, but I did wind up selling for $220 which I was fine with. Granted if I unlocked it, I would have gotten more.

As I said, it's still better than selling on eBay. I've heard too many people complaining when the buyer got the package there was no phone in there. Paypal/eBay always sides with the buyer.

Why do people send emails that resemble text messages?

Are we devolving?

I dunno, rudolf. If I asked for 325, people would offer me 175. I agree that 400 is too much. But, that's a hell of a price drop to 220, yanno?

:) thanks. You're right.

I'm guessing people send emails that resemble text messages because they're sending them from phones.

I will say that I sold my 3g for 245 (unlocked and jailbroken, but not in the greatest shape). It did take some patience though. If you have a number in mind, just hang in there and someone should bite.

Anonymity is a big thing on CL, so people don't like to get all formal with their contact info (at least from my experience). As long as someone shows up when they say they do and brings cash that passes the marker test, I sell them the phone and move on.

Why bother replying to them at all? I've asked myself this after reading several posts here, not just yours. Did someone really say that they reply to Nigerian scammers or did I misread that?

Is it JB and unlocked? If not, then I'd do that and see what kinda offers.

If it is, and this is all your getting, only you can decide how long you are willing to wait or if you feel it's even worth it to sell it because it's not giving you the return on your investment that you wanted.

I think that if you're asking 375 and people want to give you 350, why quibble over 25 bucks... but that's just me.

My brother sells stuff as FIRM all the time, and if he doesn't get what he wants, he gives it to a friend or keeps it. It's a matter of principle with him. ;)

Ohyeah... I understand people wanting to be anonymous.

I'd just like something along the lines of:

"Do you still have the iPhone 3GS from this ad? (insert url for ad)

If so, I'm interested.

I'm willing to offer you (insert amount)."

/end message

That would do it.

Not anything personal, just something that seems like:

a) they are serious
b) they are courteous

Maybe it's because I'm a chick, but I really don't wanna meet Slim Shady's angry cousin at the mall to sell my phone.

Color me cautious and all.

:D

Fwiw,

The very pleasant man who wanted an unlocked and JB'ed iPhone and was kind enough to offer me 320 when I was asking 350 wrote me some pretty short messages, but they were informative and gave just enough info.

:)

It is jailbroken and unlocked yes.

Most 32Gb around me are listed for 430+ but honestly I am not going to waste my time in that ridiculous price range.

I thought people would jump on 375. But every offer has been 350. I really am just trying to get as much out of it as I can to put towards an iPad.

I just sold a 3Gs for $300. I asked $325 on Craigslist and accepted $300. If I didn't have iOs4 installed and if I had Jailbroken and unlocked it I probably could have gotten more, but who has the time...

Mine was 16gb, 3GS, white, unlocked, JB'ed, running iOS 4.0.1. I sold it for 320. It was a refurb/OEM and in FLAWLESS condition. I'd only made one call on it to test it out before I JB'ed and UL'ed it.

I'm fine with that price. It took me like, 10 minutes to JB/UL.

:)

I think you did okay for 300 if you didn't feel like doing anything extra, fwiw.

Cool, that's about what you'd get on eBay after eBay/Paypal fees and insurance.

Okay... so I took my 3GS to the Apple Store and got it replaced. It kept doing weird stuff in the middle of a couple of apps (Facebook and my local news station's app)... the guy at the Genius bar tested it, and said he did see those apps hanging on the diagnostic, and it didn't seem that it should be the phone, but if I'd already wiped and reset it (I had, it was my 2nd trip to complain about this), he'd give me a replacement phone.

Took shiny, new replacement phone (refurb/or new OEM, one never knows) home, stuck it in our lightbox, took photos, and posted it on Craigslist a few hours ago. (I have a 32gb ip4 now, so I don't NEED the 3GS)

It is a white, 16gb 3GS (like new... for real), including box and all cables, earbuds, and a hardshell black case that looks new.

I listed it for 400 dollars. Not because I expect to get that much (I want 300). But, because I know that people on CL are notorious lowballers.

I've had 2 offers since I posted it a few hours ago, and they've been for 220 and 225.

Is it really proper negotiating etiquette to just send a 5 word comment offering a person nearly half their requested amount for goods listed for sale?

I mean, no opening salutation? No fishing around to see how much less I might be willing to take?

This phone is in far better condition than the 3G I sold last year, OR the 1st gen I sold the year before, and I got 325 for the 3G and 350 for the 1st gen.

Am I missing something crucial? Is the 3GS really that undesirable?

From what I have observed, part of the problem in the market is that people sell their phones for next to nothing. It's like they have no concept of their value. Maybe they're college kids or teens whose parents spoil them buy upgrading their phones every year and they don't care what they recoup because it's just money for beer or pot... I really just dunno.

If the phone was damaged in some way, or even had signs of wear (there are none), I would've listed it for a bit less.

Eh... advice, anyone?

I'm happy to adjust my expectations. I'm not in a hurry to sell the phone. But, these offers of 220 and 225 are just crazy. I'd rather give it to one of my kids.

Tru dat

Has anyone here sold an iPhone 4 on Craigslist and for how much did you get for it?

My mother is eligible for an upgrade, but she is not into smartphones and their mandatory data plan contracts. She is still satisfied with her Moto Z9 after almost two years with it. I am thinking of just telling her to get the iPhone 4 and just sell it on Craigslist.
