Threads Privacy Rules.
When I saw that too I was just amazed how much data is just blatantly wanted just for a twitter alt. It doesn't surprise me because of well Meta, but I don't know just seeing that listed like that I guess did surprise me for a split second.
Which is just 1 piece of data more than how much Amazon collects

Let's see how many people delete their Amazon accounts now.

I don't have an Instabook account to delete so how do I even sign into this new webpage from Safari?
You can't.

Threads isn't meant to be used on a web browser, to my knowledge. You might be able to see content on Safari, such as if someone links to a particular post and you don't have it downloaded, but you can't log in or create anything on the website itself.

You literally must have an Instagram account.

I didn't bother to do a comparison, but I imagine the data that Threads collects is remarkably similar to a lot of popular apps and services. It's nothing new. It's just shocking to compare an app like Threads that hoovers up everything to one like Mastodon (a direct competitor—although one that will never do more than carve out a niche in a much larger market—in the war to replace Twitter) that collects nothing.

My understanding (from reading posts in yesterday's Threads thread) is that it is an app only, with no browser-based access.

That could be wrong, of course. And it could change. That was information posted here, in a forum that often has inaccurate information, about an app that only launched yesterday afternoon and that is no doubt changing. So... grain of salt.

Well, that’s stupid.

It’s a smart tactic to keep people from deleting their profiles as Meta tries to get this new app off the ground, but meh. Any service that doesn’t give users the option to delete their account independently sort of stinks.

what happens when you delete the threads app? does your insta account gets deleted too?

I managed to “sneak in” despite being in Europe. The app is a bit confusing not being chronological and pretty empty I guess it is because most european accounts I follow aren’t on it yet. But I’m curious to try it out.

Uh, can you make a separate Instagram account since the article implies it does not integrate into the Instagram feed; you could later kill the Threads and Instagram account.

This strong link to Instagram is Thread’s main disadvantage at the moment. Depends on how much people hate Twitter who don’t mind Instagram.

Why would anyone use this over Twitter, which will have way better free speech rules? It's better for everyone.

I deleted my Instagram months ago, The censure is insane; you can't even use the word fat without getting a warning for hate speech. I still have Facebook for family and friends, though.

Meta hasn’t made anything innovative or interesting except for Facebook. They’ve been spending the past decade acquiring or ripping off other apps with very little to show for it.

Things I like:
  • It isn't Twitter (not support Baby Musk)
  • It does same as Twitter for some of the items (see below hates)
  • Tied to my online social profile
Things I hate:
  • Bound to my Instagram account
  • No web page to go look at things (like Twitter)
  • No category follow (I liked to follow startrek, RPG, dungeonsanddragons, games, etc. )
  • Did I mention it is bound to my Instagram account?

While it is a good first pass at an app, there definitely is some development opportunities here that can be capitalized on by META to make better use of the app - Gonna let it bake in a while and see what they come up with.

Left Twitter 2 months ago after almost 15 years (2008). Elon Musk is a douche!
