While it's true that there will always be a new version, as someone will always chime in to remind you here, that is not very helpful.

I always try to buy shortly after a new release, so there's no issue of figuring out when the next one is. Of course, it depends on how much you need it now.

You mentioned that you don't want to be disappointed with a new release. Even though new designs might have more problems than established ones, I personally wouldn't be too concerned with that. You've got a warranty even if you don't buy AppleCare, and problems are still a small percentage, which seem bigger when you read complaints online.

oooook. . .

ok so everybody is blowing my post way out of proportion. I gave my advice. Did anybody read the whole thing? I said I would rather buy the older version with all the kinks worked out than a new one with possible problems. Sorry to snap, but I've been in the same delimma for the past month (which is no excuse, really. . . I truly am sorry if i offended anybody) I've decided to buy and I think you should do the same. No lie. Go for it, what have you to lose, in all honesty. Like someone said earlier, no matter when you buy, it will be an amazing machine. :)

That actually couldn't be farther from the truth. If you have even just been reading the front page on this site you would know there are a lot of rumors of a new Macbook. Mainly montevina.

My point exactly, rumors, not an announcement, not concrete proof, just rumors. So I was right on with my statement. Until apple says 'there will be a new macbook coming out [date] and the features will be [features], alls we know is that it will come out sometime within the next year, and will have the montevina processor.

As is 99% of the time on here, if you need it, go buy it.

You will NOT be disappointed and IMO you will not be missing out on anything incredible that is missing from your purchase

I think people really over-value the next upgrade at times. Sometimes the value is justified but with these bumps that isnt always the case

Well, i just joined yesterday after lurking for a while...

My SR 2.4 macbook just came in yesterday, and i can't stay away from it...

i put 4 gigs into it, and it screams. I use it for some Blizzard gaming, but for the most part i like to use Garageband and stuff for when my band jams a bit, and other stuff.

I think if you need one, or would want one, grabbing it now isn't a bad idea. As soon as you buy a pc, it is outdated anyhow.

And the 2.4 c2d with 4 gigs screams somethin' fierce.

woohoo.

Well im gonna wait a little longer. This next revision of MB's and MBP's is supposedly going to have major design changes, (aluminium casing), and supposedly LED screens and definently the new Montevina processor and chipset that supposedly brings faster processors with greatly decreased power consumption. It might give the MB's bluetooth 2.1 and multitouch aswell.

They're the reasons to wait.

When I was buying a MacBook a 1 1/2 year ago, people were saying to wait because there was going to be "aluminum casing"..Good thing I didn't listen, I'd still be waiting.

Actually, I bought my Blackbook in May 2007, the day Apple released a refresh, I went into my local reseller and bought the "old" model because it was $300 off because it was now "discontinued".

Even though there was a refresh, it wasn't significant enough to warrant spending $300 more for a slighty faster processor, and 40GB of HD...

I thought about waiting too, but I found a GREAT deal on Ebay yesterday so I bought it. Keep in mind that you may not get much discount if any on a new model. The discount I got, I could get all the extra Apple toys and still stay under retail.

if. you. need. it. now. ,. buy. it. now.
if you can stand to wait, wait.
if you're always waiting for the next new thing, you'll always be waiting, and never buying.

i am so effing sick of these threads. i'm going to buy a macbook in the next few weeks (i leave in 3 weeks for school) and if they update, hoorah, congrats for those who waited out this storm of rumors, if not, hoorah. the only reason i'm waiting for another week or so is because i need to wait for my student aid to come in. i was going to wait until the new update, but i can't wait; school starts too soon and i need the laptop probably as soon as classes start.

and honestly, when was there ever a new design w/o flaws? show me i'm wrong if i'm wrong. i'll apologize. but honestly, i'd rather have the old version of a laptop w/all the kinks worked out than a new one right off the assembly line with features that probably won't work as smoothly as one would hope.

i'll say it again, if you need it now, buy it now. if you can stand to wait for. . who knows how long, wait.

mmkay, got it? good. kthxbai.

+1

I'm too somewhat in the same boat. I'm juggling the decision of getting one soon for college (and taking advantage of the college discount + Touch rebate), or waiting and letting the Touch special go by (can always get a refurb or whatever comes out in the upcoming new models, and get the new MacBook on the reasonable assumption that they will be pretty good and worth waiting 2 more months for.

I'm kind of surprised at the anger certain people have at others posting about it on a site that is called, literally, Mac "Rumors." People come here to commiserate, talk amongst themselves about what might be coming out soon, etc. Mixmacface, you didn't offer advice, you gave a scolding. If you don't like these kind of threads wasting your time, then ignore them and don't bother posting in them. Simple solution for you, and zero time wasted.

All that said, I'm really starting to lean towards waiting until after the new announcements. It would be annoying to start the semester with the old pen 'n paper, but I think it would be far more annoying to buy one now, then have a significantly better spec'd one come out a month down the line, at a reduced price even. As much as I'd like to get a MacBook now, and be all comfortable with it when the semester begins, it really doesn't make much financial sense to rush it, with the prospect of something with better value right around the corner.

Seconded, and I'm in the same boat as you. Buying something with the knowledge something better is imminently coming out in a timeframe that you can afford to wait is dumb, no exceptions.

I dunno, I've been toying with the idea of picking up a new Macbook for a while and pretty much have decided to just 'go for it'. Like one of the posts said, NO ONE besides apple and the distributors (in some cases) know for sure when the new models are coming out.

Wait a week? a month? several months? If that's the case..well, I've waited a month... what's one more-type thinking. You'll never end up buying anything! Just get it, enjoy it, don't worry about the next revision. Rule of thumb with anything you buy... the second you buy it, it's outdated. Cars, appliances, PCs; there's always something better, faster, newer etc etc.

I'm just going to go out and get my MacBook (and ipod touch! wee) and not look back!

I've been waiting for a while and have decided to buy mine this coming weekend, which happens to be NC tax free weekend. Ordering on Saturday should have it arriving no later than the following Wednesday, if a refresh happens on that Tuesday prior to me receiving it I'll simply send mine back unopened for the newer model.
