I got this on steam and have no idea how to play it. I looked on like but all the beginner guides are about strategy and units. I cant figure out how to select units and make them move/attack! i had assumed it was like "click on a unit, then click where you want them to move" but i cant figure it out. what am i missing?

On the game's page in your library view within the Steam client you will notice a list of links along the right side and among them will be one for the Manual. This has the info you are looking for.

Have you got a two-button mouse? It's left click to select units, left click and drag to select a group of units, and right click on the ground to make them move.

Great game but very, very difficult after the first few missions.

It really helps if someone familiar with the game can walk you through it. Otherwise kind of a steep learning curve. There is one scenario in the tutorial about 4 or 5 in, I just can't get past with multiple attempts using different strategies.

Hmm, sounds like this might be a job for the mighty You Tube!

Was it the last one of the first set of missions, where you have to defend the base against seemingly endless waves of Soviet forces?

That one was just awful. Saving after pretty much every action is the key, because one mistake means you get overrun a couple of minutes later. Also, you survive for 20 minutes or whatever, and then the timer disappears and the level still doesn't end for 'story-related' reasons... So stressful.

I never got past that mission. I played all the previous missions in a very slow, careful and deliberate way, since the slow reaction times of the units and their vulnerability basically called for it, and suddenly, this mission called for a typical RTS rabid monkey clickfest.

Yeah, it was definitely a change of pace from the previous ones. The worst part was the trick ending - I survived until the timer said I was done, but the mission wouldn't end and my last couple of units got destroyed. So I had to do the whole thing again, making sure I had reserves of undamaged units at the base. You have to endure another four or five minutes of untimed assault before the diplomats step in and rescue you.

Yes, I think so...
