Abandoning the HBO branding is a curious decision as the HBO Max streaming service is known for some very popular shows, such as Succession, Game of Thrones, Euphoria, The White Lotus, and The Last of Us. The Max streaming service will have three different price points available:
  • Max Ad-Lite: $9.99/month or $99.99/year. Includes 2 concurrent streams, 1080p resolution, no offline downloads, and 5.1 surround sound quality. Supported by ads.
  • Max Ad Free: $15.99/month or $149.99/year. Includes 2 concurrent streams, 1080p resolution, 30 offline downloads, and 5.1 surround sound quality.
  • Max Ultimate Ad Free: $19.99/month or $199.99/year. Includes 4 concurrent streams, up to 4K UHD resolution, 100 offline downloads, and Dolby Atmos sound quality.
Well right up there with Netflix pricing soon. But at least they have a annual pricing, Still if there able to increase the 4K content in the Max Ultimate ad free and improved the interface they can become more then what they are now.

Terrible name. HBO's biggest asset is being HBO with the collection of great shows and a relatively consistent streak of having at least one of the "big" shows on-air. Now at a glance you don't even know this is them.
HBO has a good ring to it, it’s been there for decades. Everyone connects HBO with newly released movies that went from cinema to VOD, their quality TV shows.

But sometimes, I love to watch big companies shooting themselves in foot.
Bring some popcorn. And moooore wine!

HBO Max is part of my AT&T service and I also subscribe to ad-free Discovery+, so guess I will see how all this pans out before I decide what to do with my AT&T and discovery+ plans.

I somewhat understand why they are changing the name, because keeping HBO in it might mean consumers believe it is only an HBO service and does not include everything previously part of discovery+.

I’m really sick of being nickeled and dimed for having a 4K TV. It’s not like anyone is really selling 1080p screens in that market anymore.

$20/mo is an absolutely eyewatering amount to pay for this. I got rid of Netflix because it wasn’t worth the content at that price and HBO has not made me the case for why I should move to it from Discovery+. I never cared for GoT or Harry Potter. And that’s all they have?

Some lousy business decisions were made here.

"Max" is a very informative name for an app. /s
Let Pepsi sue them.

Also, 10 millions dogs across the world named Max: Congratz, you have been promoted to streaming service.

You to neighbour: Hey, could you watch Max for few hours for me?
Your neighbour: Aye, I can do that. proceeds to watch The Sopranos.

I pay $6.99+tax for Discovery Plus with no ads, now I have to pay $15.99? What a rip off. I already get HBOMax free with my AT&T service.
Last sentence in the article: “Discovery+ will continue to be available as a standalone service.”
Good, cause I subscribe to Discovery + and have no interest in that max stuff…

I know are they are going to pull this garbage now and lock 4K behind a higher tier?

Awaiting to see how DirecTV Stream (or whatever they rename it next) will handle my grandfathered $5/mo HBO Max. I think they are going to use this to get out of honoring that price, however I was surprised they did honor it when going from HBO to HBO Max.

Clueless branding move. Cancel all the films and TV you want, it's your business. But this is just a MESS – changing the entire brand every few months. And now? A generic brand.
That was AT&T that walked all over WB. Even tried to do those short film clips for Mobiles. Then they forced that Discovery deal. Now it looks like WB just wants a service that encompasses it all, rather the using older content naming. Hopefully idiot based AT&T is mostly removed from any decisions.

The Max launch comes a year after WarnerMedia and Discovery completed its $43 billion merger, with the combined company led by CEO David Zaslav. Part of Zaslav’s pitch to Hollywood was the creation of a streaming service that could compete with Netflix and Disney+ by combining the best of HBO’s high-brow scripted fare with Discovery’s more low-brow but profitable lifestyle and reality programming.

By removing HBO from Max’s branding, WBD is also hoping to appeal to a wider audience that may have previously turned away from the streaming service due to HBO’s high-brow reputation and higher price point. Perrette said removing HBO from the branding was a part of “preserving and protecting the most iconic trailblazing brand in entertainment.”

Hmmm.

Right now I get HBOMax for "free" based on my legacy $5 a month add on fee to what was DirecTV NOW, that became ATT TV Now and is now DirecTVstream. The package was like $40 a month when I started and has now crossed over $100 a month.

I never watch HBO live on DirecTVstream; I just use HBOMax, soon to be Max. They better not start charging me for it!

Maybe, but the perception of those in charge is that "HBO" branding hurts subscriber growth. This article doesn't state that directly but that's the between-the-lines rationale: https://www.thewrap.com/warner-bros-discovery-hbo-max-streaming-relaunch/

That might be a stupid belief but I'm sure the company has some data based on market research. I'm not sure the rebranding is a good thing but we'll see how it turns out.
