Last time I read about this, they hadn't yet said what will happen to the messages that were encrypted and stored within the period it was available. So they could become unreadable, or they may unencrypt them all when you sign in next. Who knows?

WhatsApp and Messenger continue to have end-to-end encryption for the time being.
And this is possibly the most important thing to take away. Meta might decide to do it to either or both of those later, with the same lack of warning. Probably not, but: the precedence has now been set.

Not enough people enabled the feature… duh! It’s opt-in and buried in the settings. Why was it not enabled by default? Or let’s take it the other way around. Enable it by default, and offer an opt-out button. See how many people disable the feature… Zuck s0cks

If they are looking to comply with law enforcement requests, does that mean Messenger and WhatsApp end-to-end encryption will soon end/disappear as well?

I don’t use instagram or X or Facebook.

But it is sad end to end encryption is going.

Apple’ss total control over the software is also its Achilles heal opening it up to government overreach in this case.

Let’s not beat around the bush this is purely a vehicle for spying on its citizens and everyone should care. We’re not going to get the billionaires to pay their fair share of tax if they can spy on you to stop it

I've worn glasses for decades. Just by looking at Mark's ear, I can tell that those glasses aren't comfortable to wear for more than a short period of time.
they're not prescription glasses, they're some sort of smart glasses. You can see the little cameras over the left eye. Probably Meta glasses, but I'm no expert and don't really care. 😉

I was just thinking today how bad this app has gotten compared to the early days.

I can no longer find posts (not stories) from my friends, and every other post in my feed is an egregious ad.

It's become a cesspool of rage bait content, unrelated ads and outright trash. Its basically the new Facebook.
Yeah and the worst part is it’s operated by 20.000 people apparently.
I’m 100% confident I can walk around the campus and gather a couple dozen philosophy and IT students (a surprising amount studies both) and create a better version of it.
But who would want something that already exists…
Instagram needs to be dismantled.

Same ownership, same end result lol.

I eagerly await the downfall of Meta... I'll probably be waiting forever, but one can hope.

Don't be discouraged, Instagram is terrified of TikTok, and rightfully so because engagement figures favor the latter.

Facebook is doing even worst, inactivity, account deletions, little engagement, and very low new sign ups. In fact, the majority of the content on Facebook comes from shared links of content generated elsewhere, not in the platform.

WhatsApp is testing ads, intrusive ones, so I am pretty sure that the usability and user satisfaction is going to be affected. Users are already mad with the amount of scammers and the fricking AI chatbot that no one asked for in the first place.

Time to dump all that is Meta.
I swore off Facebook just today. I’ll leave my farewell post for my friends up for two weeks and then delete the account. Never mind Meta and everything underhanded it does. But the Facebook site just doesn’t work anymore. Every day… pages that won’t load, pages that freeze, pages that crash, posts that are lost, Messenger fails to open, Facebook demands that I sign in via face recognition on my phone… all on top of the AI slop, scam ads, malicious algorithms and more.

I don’t understand why you need multiple individual messaging services on all your platforms. One and done it. Make them all connect to one DM system and be done. I’m so over having a million inboxes to keep track of.

One of the best features of Windows Phone was the unified inbox, which pulled messages from all the different messaging apps into a single inbox. You didn't have to use it and could use the individual messaging apps if you wanted, but I found it great to be able to find all messages in one place.

Other than that, I don't miss much 🙂

I don't use Facebook much these days, I turned off personalized advertising in Facebook a few months ago and now the app often pauses for a 4 second ad break that pauses the scrolling.

I've learned to use that as a sign to close the app and go do something else. Log that user behavior, Meta.

Did anyone expect a Meta-owned app to maintain end-to-end encryption? While many messaging and email apps do offer it (though they vary in how they implement it), big tech companies have generally been more resistant to adopting it. Their business models often work against it. Ad-reliant platforms like Google depend on access to user data, which encryption may put out of reach.
