Had I had ANY inkling that the warranty would have been less than one year from my date of purchase, you can be damn sure I would have done something about it.
On eBay, you really need to be careful with electronics, period.

If the eBay seller isn't an authorized reseller and is simply reselling a product that was previously purchased, the warranty almost always starts upon the ORIGINAL PURCHASE/SHIP DATE, not the date of when the eBay seller resells it to you.

That is the policy of virtually all of the major laptop manufacturers.

As a FIRST-TIME purchaser of an Apple Product, I was completely UNAWARE that I would need to "check" to see what my warranty status was. Do you not get that? I bought this thing because of Apple's reputation for quality AND good customer service. I have NEVER had to check on warranty status on any computer purchase in the past. EVER. This was a brand new unit, in a sealed box, never even turned on before I got it. I had absolutely no reason not to think everything was fine.

I spoke with the editor of TUAW, and his opinion is that it shouldn't matter where I got it, as long as I have a receipt. He was insistent, and even suggested I write to Steve Jobs. So what the hell, I did. We'll see if it gets a worthwhile response. What I fully expect, if I get a response at all, will be one word: "Bummer." That's when I will know for sure that I want nothing to do with Apple.

wow you are some peice of work. If I sell a 4 year old computer on ebay, you think the new buyer is going to be able to claim the limited 1 yr warranty "cause they just bought it" from some guy off the street? NO manufacturer is going to deal with unauthorized/aftermarket sales outside of their own distribution channels. To do so would be a revolving door for fraud. They may lose a customer over this spat but honestly you seem like the type that would yell at someone for absolutely no reason; I bet you gave the ebay seller positive feedback too.

As so many others have pointed out, your issue here is with the eBay seller, not Apple. Anything you EVER buy on eBay needs to be checked out very carefully from a warranty perspective for exactly this reason. You have no idea when the seller bought it. A company shouldn't be responsible for the actions of Joe Blow the eBay seller who is not an authorized reseller of their product in the first place.

Ok, I get it. Youve never bought an Apple computer before, but it's still your responsibility to know the warranty status of your machine. Your attempt at generating bad PR for Apple because you screwed up is particularly immature.

I have to agree with this. I didn't go through ebay because I wanted to buy from an authorized seller. I'm cautious when it comes to electronics! You really can't blame Apple for this, IMO. What happens if the ebay seller is selling 2 year old machines that are still in the box? You actually expect Apple to still have a one year warranty?
 
I feel for the OP, but I agree with what others have been saying in this thread. It usually pays off to do a little research, ESPECIALLY when buying from ebay or craigslist. This doesn't just go for Apple products. Any tech product will have a warranty, and it pays to check the status of said warranty when looking to purchase. I'm sorry you got burned. Your issue is with ebay. Have you tried contacting them? They tend to be sympathetic to buyers that get damaged goods, especially when the seller is misrepresenting themselves (in this case, as an Apple Reseller). You'd have better luck doing that then barking up Apple's tree.

Let me tell you what's wrong with this statement, by rewording it for you.

As a FIRST-TIME purchaser of an Apple Product, I was completely UNAWARE that getting a new-in-box computer for a large discount does not give me a full warranty. I should have purchased directly from Apple.
 
your problem is with the ebay vendor, not apple. technically apple did provided a year of apple care. it's like you're buying a second hand computer despite it has never been openned.

if you want to buy from ebay, you can't really say apple mistreated you. unless you can prove to them the vendor is a certified saler or what not, you're most likely out of luck

I hate to burst your innocence-bubble, but not honoring warranties for eBay-purchased items is not exclusive to Apple. Lots of manufacturers - computer and otherwise - won't warraty something if it was sold and bought on eBay.

And yet, you bought it in a venue known to be rife with fraud. You don't buy a BMW at Joe's Auto Auction and expect BMW to treat it like a new car.
