I think it was a poor performance compared to WWDC. The products themselves are okay, but I hope iOS 7 runs better on a new Mini than my current model. I installed Mavericks already, but only want the added battery life. Wasn't interested in Touch ID, as it's just one more thing to break. I don't even bother with a pass code already. My life is an open book.... :D

Overall I just wanted to get the rMBP I bought in April updated, and was interested in a lighter iPad 5 (Air sounds stupid...LOL). I think Apple could leave out the jokes about other brands/systems, as it seems a little petty and tacky.
Other than that.....

My wife and I are very disappointed. For us today was all about the Ipads. I equally use Apple and Android, but my wife is a die hard, life long, Apple junkie.

First off the iPad Air. For the unit itself we think it is great. However, $80 for the smart case???? Are you kidding me?!?!

The iPad mini 2. You either think it is worth the money or you don't. My wife and I think it will be a great device but the $400 price tag to be honest is very insulting. Once again, the smart cover for the new mini is $70!?!?

The iPad mini and iPad 2 selling for what they are is mind boggling. Such old technology, they should be selling for half of what they are.

Both my wife and I were all set for each of us buy an iPad Mini2 with Retina......for $329 to $349 each. I have to go with the Nexus 7 now, at $229 it seems like an incredible value. Shockingly though is my wife decision after today's announcement: she is going to buy a Kindle Fire tablet. You guys have to know my wife, as I said, die hard Apple all the way. She has always laughed at every Android device I have owned. She is pretty insulted by Apple right now and is now deciding on which Kindle Fire to order tonight. I am shocked by her reaction to be honest. Granted, she is an Amazon junkie as well so I guess she is just going from Apple's ecosystem to Amazon's now.

I am sure the Mini 2 will be a great device, but at that price there is no way my wife or I could ever justify buying it.

I don't have an iPhone 5s so Touch ID doesn't bother me either, Maybe if I had one it would having to remember that I can't just touch my finger on the home button like I do on my iPhone. Overall the iPad Air is definitely a purchase for me coming from an iPad 2.

Not to mention they only gave the iPad 15 minutes of show time. And you can tell they were rushing through it by their voices.

Just a warning, this happened to me before. I've had a impulse buy with the Nexus 4 after the iPhone 5 and the thing was horrible. Just a word caution give it a couple of days.

That's a good upgrade then! Getting the Air (first time iPad buyer)

Ok, the reason for the massive price difference is the new processor (2x upgrade) and the retina display. Ok, the price should have been the same but there is an Apple Tax on everything they make.

Before your wife makes her decision, remind her that in a year, two at the most the Fire will be out of date and will not run the latest OS. The iPad Mini however probably will still be on sale and will be running the latest OS (look at that iPad 2, holding out like that).

Just remind her of this and the fact that everything is better staying Apple, especially if she owns a Mac or other iOS devices, especially with the Mavericks update, iCloud documents and iLife. It may be a bit more to pay, however it will probably be worth it in the end.

(P.S: tell her to look at the refurbished section, the iPad mini 1st gen has been reduced in price there and is a pretty good deal!)

Then have fun spending $400 on a mini.

What does me "having fun spending $400 on a mini" (which I have no problem doing, incidentally) have anything to do with this thread being a failure, which it still is? :)

You don't like the price? Don't buy it. Problem solved.

The Retina Mini is one of the better announced products today. Yes, it got retina screen, just as everyone wanted. It also has the more powerful A7 processor (which is a tremendous improvement over the original Mini).

The two things that could have made the Retina Mini "absolutely perfect" would have been to improve the camera a bit (rumors speculated 8 megapixel camera) and the addition of the Touch ID sensor. Other than that, everything else about the new Mini is really great. I wouldn't say grade A. I'd say more like an A- or B+. Still, a very good product.

For the whiners: yes, they bumped the price up $50. But this was not surprising given the inclusion of the Retina display and the beefed-up processor.

Will be ordering one in November.

She wouldn't buy a refurb, nor would she buy the low resolution original Mini. She just views this as sign that it's time for her to change. She was just saying a few minutes ago that at the price of the Kindle Fire's should could buy a new one every 18-24 months and it would still be cheaper in the long run than a Mini, plus she would have all the benefits of being an Amazon Prime Member and owning a Kindle tablet (free movie rentals, free book rentals, etc). I myself have used many Android devices so I know exactly what I will be getting with the Nexus 7.

Who knows, two years from now Apple may get more competitive with pricing and Android devices may go up, thus we might switch again.

I don't think its safe to say its a failure at all. Encaustic it isn't. If any thing its a great success with a lot of great things announced like the free update to OSX, the new MacBook Pros and more importantly the new iPads. The only disappointment for me was that they didn't spend more time discussing the iPads.

Apple doesn't have to innovate much with tablet yet sells millions of unit easily. Just look at hardware of Nexus 7. It looks so outdated with huge bezel and virtual buttons on bottom that taking up screen space for no reason. Competitors still can't figure out how to make a quality tablet.

What's the point of buying a product you have to upgrade every year?

no touch id? ok.

no gold color? ok.

price? ok.

no pre-order? that sucks. do they not have a couple of mac pros lying around to take my money? sheesh. i thought that was a let-down, and apple won't tell you when you can order. sorry tim, i'm not standing in line so you can put me in your hype video.

i've got no complaints. i'll be buying the ipad air. i'm not interested in the mini, but i will say it is finally a worthwhile purchase.

at the end of the day, i got free apps, a free os, and another ios update. cool. in a few weeks i'll have a faster ipad. where was the failure today?

compared to the windows presentation it was better, right? oh yeah, that reminds me of a zen koan -- if microsoft had a presentation and no one attended, did it make a sound?

don't get me wrong, i like a lot about microsoft and use it regularly, but apple just changed the game and left microsoft looking irrelevant -- free os, free software, competitively priced hardware, gorgeous and innovative design seems like a slam dunk to me.

just because i didn't get everything i wanted doesn't mean it was anything close to a failure. Explain the failure to everyone on the street and at your office while they enjoy their new devices / apps / os.

Honestly, after watching the keynote I feel nothing came out of it expect of some performance bumps and raised prices. $400 for an iPad mini? Honestly, the worst part in my opinion is no Touch ID as I have a 5s. Now I have to adapt to both sliding and unlocking and my fingerprint? I thought the idea of the 5s was to open doors for the future. We're going backwards! Overall, just really disappointed. Expect for the free Mavericks :D

Edit: Maybe not so much a failure but a disappointment as I got Mavericks for free! :D

I don't know about the event, but your post is a failure.

Every event, someone comes along and posts these silly remarks. OP is no different, and it won't end....every

Well the Ipad Mini is just too close to my Droid Maxx in size - so not interested AT ALL in that. But the real failure from my world is no 17" MBP with antiglare screen. Retina is just too hyped for me to buy into it. Thanks but no thanks.

Oh I am not complaining - I am exercising my right to free speech.

Interesting choice of words "safe to say"

Obviously, from the vitriol you've invoked it's not particularly safe

The Mini got a nice update, so did the MacBook Pros so the event wasn't bad. It was laughable how they tried to convince us about the innovation they had to do to shrink the iPad though. What they were in fact saying was "we managed to fit iPhone components in the much bigger iPad Air casing!"

The event was not a failure, just predictable in its format. Starting out with the gag worthy self promotion "look at us" style boasting has become a worn out waste of time. However it's not likely to change.

While nothing was particularly impressive, at least most of the products were updated to some degree. The incorporation of iOS elements in OS X, was no surprise, nor of any real benefit other than to bring OS X down to novice level status.

It probably is more because the competition's products sucks balls ...
That's true. I've tried the competition and they aren't nearly as well made or comfortable to use as Apple's iPads.

… rather than Apple's products actually being nice and cheap.
WTF? Ask anyone what "nice and cheap" is and you will find even FREE is too expensive.

For the amount of productivity and entertainment and access you get with the iPad, it is definitely worth the $399-$499 minimum entry. Remember the first iBook back in 1999? I purchased one ($1999, I believe) and that was entry level. Though the dollar is probably almost half the worth of that time, a better product is now released for only 1/4 the price; the iPad is 1/8th of an economic dent of a portable in 1999… that's cheap!

Give it 10 years and an iPad made without all the bangles and whistles will be $200.

EDIT: not to mention the free software! 10 years ago you would have to pay $1000+ for what iWork and iLife do for free on the iPad. I'm not sure what the competition's models provide with software, but I can't see how people aren't pleased with the ability-vs-dollar value of the iPads starting on Nov. 1st.

I did this with Ipad 3, I bought a Kindle Fire then a HTC tablet, but they both sucked when compared to the functionality, smoothness, responsiveness etc. of an iPad and I soon returned to buy an iPad.

I think if she is a die hard Apple user she will also find it frustrating to use one of these other devices as I did.
