27-inch 4K is so pervasive, price friendly and decent quality, Apple could make it perfect scaling ratio (for "look like 1440p") as well. 27-inch 4K is going to stay for a very long time while 5K popularity and cost will never approach a decent 4K. Apple should consider such a move if it's caring for users.
Um, no. 4:1 scaling for a 4K display would be 1920x1080, which looks ridiculous at 27".
That's why Apple went with 5K.
That's not what I meant. What you said above is why Apple has to fix it IMO for the reasons I stated previously and also quoted in this response. Let me clarify.
For 27-inch, 5K@"look like 1440p" and 4K@"look like 1440p" are pretty close. The advantage of 5K is when the viewing distance closer than 55-60cm. Some (very few) users will have the need to do pixel sniffing for their work. Most people don't. At the normal viewing distance, the two look pretty similar. Object sizes on both displays are the same btw. That's why I've been repeating myself often in this thread that my experience with 4K LG is great.
So I was and am suggesting Apple should fix their rendering for 27-inch 4K. Make "look like 1440p" to be the default for such displays. Skip the brute force up-rendering & down-sampling steps altogether.
My suggestion resolves two common counter-arguments against 4K made by some tech savvy 5K proponents. As-is, without the change, 4k @"look like 1440p" works pretty well visually. With the change/improvement, many more Mac users couldn't be happier with a bit improvement in GPU efficiency.
