Does anyone know what they are replacing the drives with? My iMac doesn't qualify (which is good I guess), but I'm wondering if the replacement drives will be SATA III......?

Mine was replaced with a WDC WD1001FALS-403AA0. Much noisier than the Seagate.

i shall see today what they tell me at the apple store....i hope i will be able to pick it up (worst case scenario) by this friday at least....i don't want to be without it all weekend...kills a lot of my work time....i can always use the macbook in the meantime but i much rather have the screenspace and faster speeds of my iMac, anyway ill report later tonight on what the Apple store tells me..btw i'm in the US going to the one in Orland Park, Illinois since its the closest one to me (about a 20 min drive)

Exchanged ours yesterday...

Got the e-mail on Sunday- when I talked to the store they told us to expect 5 to 7 days turn-around time. (NOT happy!) Then when we arrived, turns out we were within the 20 day purchase period - to the day!! Walked out with a brand new baby.

So i lugged the beast with me in the box down to the mall....the apple "genious" looks at it and goes "Well i'd just use it till it fails if it's working fine" ...im thinking "why the hell would i do that???" anyway the guy was nice and all but they didn't have a replacement drive so i took my computer back home. He told me it will take 2-3 days to order the part and then when i bring it back in it will be ready the next day.....so i expect to drop off the computer either thursday or friday and have it ready either friday or saturday

I got the email but I'm not going to worry about it right now. I run Time Machine and clone my drives for offsite storage monthly. I'll get the drive swapped eventually but taking it off the articulation arm and living without the machine that acts as the media hub for my whole house for 2-3 days is not something I'm looking forward to.

update - dropped off iMac last night...guy at apple store told me it will take 1-3 business days to get the work completed....he did assure me that it would be done fast....as of yet I am awaiting their call ..praying it's done today so i have the computer for the weekend...ill update when i get it back to see how long it took

I finally took my 27inch iMac in today. I've had it a little over a month now. Spoke to the manager and told him how I can't go anytime without my computer and how much of a hassle it is dragging it down to the store. He replaced it with a brand new one. Very satisfied with their customer service. Now I just hope this one doesn't give me problems for awhile.

got the call that my computer was ready for pickup yesterday...didn't make it in because i was out all day ...go to apple store today and i inspect it...tons of crap behind glass including one huge mark (not dust more like dried residue of some sort)...i tell they guy i cant take it back like that....they took it in the back and after about 30 minutes they got it back to me ...this time screen is perfectly clean...they did scratch the back of the foot a bit but i can live with that...overall i am satisfied..imac runs amazingly..so far cannot tell if it is running louder at all..PLEASE CHECK UR MACHINE BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE STORE!!

Mine is in at the Apple store right now. They quoted me 5-7 days but said hopefully sooner. I'm a little pissed about it. Being a new Mac user that bought into all the "it just works" hype and to have a brand new PC that cost probably 3x what I've ever paid for any other PC in my life and to have it in the shop when its only a couple months old with a week turnaround definitely sucks. I'm going to go over it with a fine tooth comb before I leave the store and make sure nothing is scratched and no dust behind the glass.

When did you buy your iMac? And is it BTO or Stock?

Bought it the day after the 2011's launched. Its a stock 3.4Ghz 27" (I've replaced the RAM with 16GB Crucial).

Would you say that the BTO i7 27" I ordered would have the same issue? I ordered it on the 18th of July to a friends house in the states...

Mine is a BTO that shipped in early July with a Seagate drive. I entered my serial number and it says my iMac does not qualify (no known issue in other words). It doesn't really matter to me as I all ready have Apple Care for the next three years and if any issue arises, I'll just call Apple and I'm sure that they'll fix it.

Is there a way of telling when the computer was made by decoding the serial number? I bought mine just over week ago , it has a WDC drive.

Alright, so I'm guessing any BTO iMac bought at around mid July would be safe, seeing as they probably discovered the issue before then, and it's not a stock, so they wouldn't have it in stores ready to sell.

the new hard drive much noisier than the recalled seagate one

just called apple care last week, and they provide the onsite repair. Today the technician came to my home to replace the iMac hard drive, it only take half an hour.

It replaced with a WDC WD1001FALS-403AA0, but that one much noisier:mad:

thinking about can I call apple care again, complaint this issue and ask them to replay another hard drive again?

What? No? WDs are known to be noisier than Seagates...be thankful that your iMac got repaired successfully. It's not going to make a difference, the WDs design makes them noisier, it's nothing to do with Apple.

just wondering if it possible to call app care again, and asking to change the WD HD to Seagate one, because the WD hd is to noisy, and i can hear the HD rotation all the time, it is very annoying

They wouldn't do it for free, you'd have to buy your own and ask them to change it for you, which I think costs something like 40$.

Really disappointed...actually I'm pissed

I bought my iMac 27" on July 9th and received the Seagate HD recall email on July 21. Took my iMac to Apple Store in Costa Mesa on Thursday, July 28th. First, when I went into the store for my Genius appointment, they made me wait 20 minutes after my appointment time. When I asked how long the HD replacement would take, the Genius said 3-5 days but it should be ready no later than Sunday. I patiently waited until Sunday and my iMac still was not ready. Well, it's Tuesday, full 6 days later and I finally got a call that my iMac was ready. At the Apple Store, I checked my screen to make sure dust did not get under the glass. That's when I started to notice scratches and dents on my previously pristine iMac. I called the manager over and he agreed that it was unacceptable. He said the only thing he can do is replace the iMac frame. He said he would order the parts and I would need to bring in my iMac again for replacement when the part arrives. The thing is, this is an iMac. You need to tear down the entire machine in order to replace the frame. Not really feeling good about this. Not cool Apple! And thanks for making me waste my time going back and forth and "dirtying" my iMac.
