Ah but clearly there was an issue here. The stand I was using wasn't housing the puck properly for the 38mm watch. I took it off the stand and charged direct and got to 100%. I never had any iproduct, MacBook that hasn't charged to 100%.

Yeah that's a different story. As for Macs not charging to 100%, occasionally normal behavior, per https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204054

I've confirmed that the extreme warmth I reported yesterday is not normal.

Today when I got my watch off the charger, it was perfectly cool. Not warm in the slightest. 100% charge.

Only thing I changed was doing a hard restart yesterday (hold both buttons for about 5 seconds).

My guess is that there was some sort of software glitch somewhere.

Check that alignment of charger puck and watch is perfect, too.

Misalignment of inductive charging components results in inefficiency, which = heat.

Glad you resolved the issue :)

Disappointing that your Griffin stand created it in the first place by not aligning the puck and 38mm watch perfectly!

Good clue for anyone else: less than 100% charging + unusual heat = likely misalignment issue.

Which makes me wonder how well Watch stand manufacturers are checking the fit of the puck to ensure proper charging.

Dodocase seem to be on top of it.

I have their stand on pre-order and am happy to wait for something that meets my personal design preferences - and that I'm confident will also work properly!

In their update on 15 May for pre-order customers they said: "Since Apple decided to ship two different charging puck designs, we've been making adjustments to the design to accommodate both styles in a single product. It's been a great engineering challenge: just the kind of thing we love. Nothing comes easy when you manufacture the quality we hold ourselves to, but you are worth it!"

Disclaimer: I have no financial (or any other other kind of vested) interest in Dodocase!

It's not still charging because if it were the 100% the Lipo would explode.

Please read the thread.
The issue was resolved.
The OP reported that the stand had prevented proper alignment of the puck and watch.

(For folks who are not familiar with the lingo, Lipo = "lithium polymer battery")

It's worth pointing out that the battery capacity indicator is just an approximation, and a relatively dodgy one at that. Since batteries aren't like juice bottles where you pour in a certain amount and then it'll be full (which you correspondingly can pour out again afterwards), battery charging circuits and attached electronics have to employ certain trickery - especially considering batteries typically lose capacity every time they're dis/charged (or even continuously over time even when not used at all; for lithium cells anyway).

As you don't want your modern portable device to suddenly keel over due to lack of power*, the charge indicator tends to under-represent the amount of (estimated!) charge left. Also, completely draining at least certain types of lithium cells will pretty much wreck them, so safeguards exist to keep at least some charge in them at all times. No guarantees though after keeping your gadget in a drawer for five years... ;)

*A "smart" device is essentially like any regular old computer, equipped with storage medium using a filing system. If you cut power while there's outstanding writes pending or in the process of being written, you risk damage to files and/or the filing system structure itself, which would be very bad obviously... :)
