I always derided the watch as an extravagant extra but I bought the series 4 the moment I saw it because I knew it'd be useful. I have also gone cellular and, since I've had it, my iPhone 8 has never left the house and I do all with the Watch. OK, I don't have all that many messages or phone calls but it works perfectly when I do and can dictate SMS replies either in French or English easily. I also love listening to music (that I've saved onto the watch) when I'm gardening as there's no iPhone to worry about when I'm walking round. I use Runtastic on the Watch when I'm cycling too and it copies my GPS route over to the iPhone when I get home. I just wish I didn't need the iPhone at all as the Watch has, to all intents and purposes, almost completely replaced it.

I asked this already and forgot again: do you have to have your iPhone powered on and connected to your Carrie to use the Cell service on your watch?

I have the cellular version and while i don’t use it often it’s nice to have every now and then and for the price here it’s not really breaking the bank.

I show sometimes with it when i go gym at work but its never close to shower gel or anything.

No, BUT.. you have to do that for SMS on your watch to work (but who’s using SMS nowadays?)

@hansokl I tested Elleptical without moving my hands yesterday and it works! I get all the credit and everything looks right.

SMS as in text messages from non apple phones?

Well that’s kind of a big deal right? You can’t send or receive texts to non apple phones.

Personally I’m using 3rd party messaging app for non iPhone friends so it’s not that big of a deal to me. YMMV.

If it’s a big deal for you, your phone only need to be on and connected to either cellular or WiFi. That’s it.

What @Mw0103 said. It doesn’t have to be on the same network as long as the watch know the WiFi. For example, your watch will work just fine on your home network even though you forgot your phone at the office.

So I think I get what you're saying, but I'm not 100% clear on this... If the phone is on wifi at home, and the watch is on wifi at the office, the (non-cellular) watch will still receive Messages and calls? Or are those dependent on bluetooth?

If the watch know WiFi at the office it will connect to it therefore it’s on network. iMessage will work. If you have WiFi calling then phone will work as well.

In essence, it will work just like when it’s connected to your phone through Bluetooth but now through WiFi instead.

Is there a setting I need to turn on for automatic workout tracking? I was on the elliptical for around 2-3 minutes before I remembered to start my workout on the watch. It didn’t ask me during that time if I started a workout. How long does it take to activate? Also, when I got finished I forgot to turn it off for around 2 minutes after. It didn’t ask if I’d stopped. I guess it takes longer than that to detect?

Look at the Watch App on your phone, then Workout. Start & End workout reminders should be set on. I'm not sure how long it takes to activate because I always set them to start and stop when changing equipment.

10 minutes more or less (from my experience).
