Why be difficult for the sake of being difficult? There's obviously an inconsistency in the coating running diagonally.

Pretty sure Apple will take one look at it and replace it.

Ok, I looked at the picture on my iPad and I can see the OP's issue now. I looked at it earlier on my iPhone and I honestly couldn't understand what he meant.

And Apple did look at it already and didn't think it was a problem.

My SS screen is marked. Went to Apple Store but apparently can happen due to the coating. Can live it but a little annoying that it can mark easily.
The SS I had appeared to be sub standard compared to my MBP. Easily scratched, reports are surfacing now about breakage, cracking and other problems. Apple can't be perfect. It may simply be a case of over promising and under delivering

What I do know is the screens on all the iPhones I've had have been extremely scratch resistant and of high quality. The Oleophobic coating has been excellent.

If history repeats itself Apple will correct their mistake and the second gen watch will be much better.

They may not. I do. Refund. Job done.

Hopefully version 2 isn't as poor quality.
