Please you must be a a Vulkano user to judge. hearing is not enough... Sling still number 1.

Pardon me, we weren't address who is number one but rather the availability of other solutions on the market. I am a Sling owner and know several friends who have purchased the Vulkano and are quite happy with it (they were Sling owners). In fact, they too were tired of being raped by Sling for having to purchase separate apps for the iPhone and iPad (at 30 bucks at shot no less).

Furthermore, the Vulkano is more capable than the Slingbox as well, offering models that allow SD storage and/or connecting to a external HD (USB 2.0) for the capability of being it's own DVR. By doing that, you can get rid of your cable company DVR which you are paying monthly for. The Sling does not allow for that capability. The Vulkano also includes Wi-Fi N.

Also, as an experienced Sling owner (for several years now), I can tell you that tech support is absolutely horrible and at times has NOT been very helpful.

Finally, you were very incorrect by saying Sling was the only option on the market. Clearly, it is not.

I know about filmon, but they've pulled access to the free channels because of a lawsuit, and it doesn't look like they'll be back.

So for watching tv anywhere with a mac or iphone it looks like the best options are slinbox and eyetv. which is better? price? service? features? etc.

Do yourself a favor, check out the Vukano box. They are having a sale until Jan 3rd. You can get a premium box for around $129 and the iOs client is a universal binary and is free.

thanks seriously considering it. how long have you used it?

I have a older Sling box (AV) that is due for an update. A few of my good friends have dumped their older Sling boxes for a Vulkano. They have all said good things about them. Last weekend, my Co-host on the tech podcast I do came to visit and she was showing me the player on the iPhone 4. It was very smooth and worked just as well a the Sling app I have on my iPhone.

I am seriously considering purchasing one.

The NYTimes reviewed the Vulkano in September and called it a train wreck. I would definitely spend some time researching before I went that route.

You can't compare any of your list with Sling Media... FilmOn has monthly fees almost 10 bucks, they're the worst. EyeTv comes next after SlingBox. I'm an old subscriber but Sling waaaaaaaay better that EyeTv, and ask everyone.

I can't compare it? Really?? I just did! Your original statement was that Sling was "the only option to get TV on iPad". I pointed out that statement was factually wrong. Are you going to apologize for spreading false information on MacRumors?

Sling is "waaaaaay better" than EyeTV? Again, according to who? You? You like Sling - great for you.. But stop presenting your personal preference as some sort of well-accepted fact.

This entire thread has a stink of a sales pitch for Sling. *MR really needs to impose something like a 2-week posting quarantine for newbies, to stop these sort of threads.

Ipad can save you money on tv bills

Cnn app + abc app + netflix streaming + filmontv subscription which is as cheap as netflix monthlsy = save tons on monthly tv charges. Zbout $20 in total or $30 witj adult channels on filmontv. And the great part its mobile and anywhere as lomg ss there is wifi unlike a big tv to carry around or $150 on up slingboxes.

Ipadlover how is filmontv or netflix expensive at $10 each when a single slingbox costs at least $150. Thats using filmontv for 15 months, and thats not counting the subscribor monthly fee you pay even with sling.

You're missing my point Mr. I'm not here to fight with you. Take it easy. I'm a user like you. We're in the same bout with different experience. If you're angry then I'm sorry. Sincerely

Who doesn't love Netflix? Everyone but again it's not Live Tv. FilmOn is spam with limited channels, and a terrible performance,, I'm sorry it's my opinion you may disagree with me. As a Slingbox PRO-Hd + Directv HD-DVR user, I'm completely happy with the HD reolution on my iPad; ANYWHERE, ANYTIME. I'm a soccer and tennis fan so every moment matters. Sincerely mate

Thats why i listed it along with cnn app and abc not by itself. If you multitask among all four of them you get good tv experience at a much cheaper rate. And filmontv has hd channels and getting more. It also has a soccer channel.

I hope they get more and more channels since that reach guy alki bought it. :D

but when you have a good company like DirecTv in your house,, you don't wanna miss the opportunity to have all your home tv in your ipad. I hope Directv do their on app like Dish..., Btw, excuse me for my language I'm not English speaker I'm from Hungary but I live in the states... Sincerely

They even have their own three dedicated movie channels. I wonder how they accomplished that? Btw tell me about the kiss principle.

Of course, I can only speak about my own experiences, but I love my Slingboxes. I own two, an AV and a SOLO, and I recommend them just about every day. That is not to say that Sling is the best company, because clearly they are not.

Sling, up until very recently, has had a history of releasing a product and then hardly ever putting out any support for it. As a consumer, that is beyond frustrating, and was enough for me to seek out alternatives. In the end, I have found that for my needs, Sling is still on top.

I bought an AV maybe 4 years ago. It served it's purpose for me, being able to placeshift my TV watching to my laptop when I was at the office or traveling. Quality was OK, of course depending on the wireless situation at hand. Once Sling released their iPhone app, I like many found out the hard way that my Slingbox was not supported. That is some really weak **** right there.

I looked into my options and found that the SOLO was supported I began to price it out. A website featured the SOLO for $99 for that day and me and about 8 other co-workers jumped on board. I got it up and running instantly and was pleasantly surprised by the improved viewing quality on my MacBook Pro. I took my old AV and put it in my father's house 3k miles away in Massachusetts so I could watch east coast programming and the occasional sports show that was unavailable to me in LA.

Still though, I could not watch the AV on my iPhone and the quality of my SOLO's performance on my iPhone was OK, and nothing as god as the quality on my MBP. I got an iPad, and of course, had to wait out until Sling put out it's iPad app.

That's when everything changed. Seriously.

Sling put out the stand-alone app and after watching the youtube videos, I paid for it and it's been great. Great. Even more amazing, Sling then came out with another update (holy ****, they never update software!!) which made the viewing even better quality.

The better part is that they somehow were able to offer viewing of most of their older models now. So, I now can choose between the two Slingboxes I have on my mobile devices which is great, and the HQ/SQ option really is useful depending on my wifi connection. The iPad Sling app on HQ is just perfect! The others are really decent quality as well. Sling more than came through.

As far as cost, well YMMV, so I can only speak for myself. I paid $120 or my AV back in the day, $99 for my SOLO and $29 each for the iPhone/iPad apps. Total cost around $300 with taxes. This was a cost I was more than ok with as I use my Sling just about everyday. The post-purchase no-fees are attractive to me and the "it just works" simplicity of the hardware/software put it over the top.

One more thing, I use my Sling a lot for something that I never thought about before purchasing. I find that I am constantly setting my DVR to record something, while away from the DVR. I realize there are other options (DirecTV app, etc.) for doing this, but nothing beats using my actual remote and knowing all the settings are correct (sports games require adding extra recording time, which might require canceling a previous scheduled recording).

Way to go Sling, your product is one of my essential and favorite apps on the iPhone/iPad. :)

I am sure it does, if you don't care about content or time shifting.

Nice informative thread. Your way with words and language seems very marketing like; hence, I can see why many, including me, feel you work with them - but it doesn't matter really.
I just wish the sling box would be a little cheaper than 300. Being a dish customer, I'd like to see one at about 100 USD - I think that's a better price.

Ok wow this is pretty cool. I have only had my iPad since Christmas and I swear everyday I find some cool thing on it.

I have had the EyeTV Hybrid on my iMac and now with the EyeTV app it is so Colleen to be able to watch live tv on the iPad.

Ha Ha Ha :D I swear I don't work with Sling media. I'm just an exchange student live in the US. Anyway, You're right the price should be more cheaper, I mean 29.99 bucks for an app that's just ridicules, but in my case I have to live with it until I find another solution. I hope new companies like Sling and Eyetv get involve in the industry of Internet TV, I don't see the bright on Monsoon but we will see ,, Good to have you here sir

iPad is the device of the decade in my opinion, just magic. EyeTv is a perfect way to watch TV on your iPad I hope you can share your experience... thank you
