Depends on the movie aspect ratio so its either 1.85:1 and 2:39:1. 16x9 which is 1.77:1 and very close to 1:85:1 with a tiny black bars on top and bottom.

Well, obviously it depends on the ratio :D My point was there's a notable segment of content, i.e., modern film, re: your comment that "16x9 is the standard".

So after all the badmouthing of the X, you still bought one? I don't get it.
Yup! This way I can experience it myself instead of making a judgement based off of others and never actually owning one.

I know you were ready to pounce on me if I said I never owned one and just briefly played with one.

Well, yea haha. I am totally okay with people having their own opinions, but only if they have sufficiently tried the device. So what are your overall thoughts on it?

I never watch videos full screen because the cutout is too distracting for me so I zoom out when the aspect ratio requires it. It turns out, the aspect ratio of most of the video content naturally adds black bars to the left and right of the screen anyway so it's not a problem at all in those situations.

When I do zoom, the pillbox isn't too bad though. I'm looking forward to the day when Apple figures out how to put those sensors behind the screen. I know it's gonna be awhile.

Overall, I love the iPhone X and the notch by itself isn't a reason not to get one.

I actually love the notch. Look at the iconography on the Apple website: straight away you know its the X because of the notch. You notice it when you're out somewhere and someone else has an X, it's a dead giveaway. It sets the X apart from ALL other phones.

As for video: I tend to have my thumb on the area where the notch is anyway, so it really doesnt matter. Video on the entire front face of the device looks RIDICULOUSLY good, so space-age, that I don't even notice or care about the notch. And given what it houses, which is awesome technology, as IF I'm going to whinge about it!

^^THIS

I find it just as enjoyable as on my 6s Plus. Plus better quality picture---

BTW the sound is really good (for a phone) and loud on the X.

I could agree with every one of these posts, but this one made some additional points.

I have not found the notch an issue, and as rugnamkc says, the rest of the presentation is outstanding. I managed to sync a video side by side with my 7, which I thought was very good, and honestly, I'm totally spoiled. The OLED display and sound are simply in a different league altogether.

The notch sticks out like a sore thumb when in full screen. People who dont think so are lying.

Nonsense. Or should I say that's a lie? It depends entirely on what you're watching (aspect ratio).

I didn't think much of the fullscreen mode until I watched a video clip o YouTube, where the top/bottom cropping were SO obvious. It was a 4-frame comparison video, and it cut just enough of the top part of the video, that it obstructed the text identifiers.

After realizing how much video was being cropped, I've decided not to use fullscreen mode.

Getting used to or adjusting to the notch and actually liking the notch are 2 comepletely different situations.

I’ve adjusted to the notch but I still do not like it. It would drive me crazy if there was a notch on my tv or computer monitors.

Notch thread #5,456,456. Hasn’t everything already been said? Lovers gonna love. Haters gonna hate. Nothing new here.
