No, the S4 and S5 ute the same A12 based cores while the S6, S7, and S8 share cores from the A13.

Thanks, I had the start wrong. So this makes sense.

Just because you can’t do a software update you don’t need to buy a new watch. Apple is not forcing you to do that.
My concern is more security updates. I know they've been pushing security updates to old iOS versions (like 12, 15 and 16). The question is will they push security updates to older WatchOS releases.
I upgrade my watch every 4 years anyway… make sense to do so. I got two more years on my SS series 8I never thought my SE would lose support just after 4 years, but anyway, it is what it is.
I went back to a GShock after AW for a while, grabbed a GBD200 for the MIP display, and settled on my Instinct 2. Seemed like the perfect balance between GShock and AW.I would be surprised if they really drop support for the Apple Watch SE, four years seems like an incredibly short lifespan for a watch.
If so, the SE will likely be my last Apple Watch and I'll just go back to my old Casios or look into the new Garmin watches.
No watchOS 11 doesn’t mean support is immediately dropped. You’re somehow assuming Apple is immediately cutting off security updates for 10, which is historically not the case. Not going to play Apple's game with the Watch. Personally I view this planned obsolesence policy fine with understandably replaceable commodities like computers, but to drop support for a watch is breaking some sort of covenant with me. It's a watch, lol. How hard can it be to keep a person on staff to spend an hr or so every few months sending out security updates to the AW4 every now and then? Will wear mine until the battery becomes too much of a hassle then junk it and move on.
I hope not. That’s the only reason I bought an Apple WatchDoubt SE 2020 too soon
My series4 is still on watchOS 9, so whatevs.
I have still never owned an Apple Watch, thankfully.

Your watch will still work just fine.
I know the watch will work fine , that is why I said I would keep it until the battery becomes too much of a hassle. I said nothing of an immediacy, nor did I imply immediacy in my post.No watchOS 11 doesn’t mean support is immediately dropped. I got my Series 5 in Spring 2020 when it was still the current model.
4 years of updates is pretty poor by Apple standards.
If there are certain features that are hardware limited I would understand a watered down version of the latest OS, like my non M1 iPad Pro not getting centre-stage, but to stop all updates for such a recent model is not good.
Yeah I have pretty much decided that when my series 5 dies it’s getting replaced with a normal watch. Series 5 will be my first and last watch. Not going to play Apple's game with the Watch. Good chance yes, but I'm guessing they'll all be supported for another 3 years. So does this mean that Apple will drop S6, S7, and S8-based watches in one get go in the future? They're all based on the A13's E-cores. This would be abhorrent.
The only thing I want with my Series 5 is bug fixes. Occasionally the swipe doesn't work until a reboot, or until after I wait a couple of minutes. My 4 is working great, so I'm not sure what the OS is really going to do for me anyway.
