I know the watch will work fine , that is why I said I would keep it until the battery becomes too much of a hassle. I said nothing of an immediacy, nor did I imply immediacy in my post.
From your original post: “How hard can it be to keep a person on staff to spend an hr or so every few months sending out security updates to the AW4 every now and then?”

The answer is “Not hard, since that’s what they already do.” :)

Not going to play Apple's game with the Watch. Personally I view this planned obsolesence policy fine with understandably replaceable commodities like computers, but to drop support for a watch is breaking some sort of covenant with me. It's a watch, lol. How hard can it be to keep a person on staff to spend an hr or so every few months sending out security updates to the AW4 every now and then? Will wear mine until the battery becomes too much of a hassle then junk it and move on.
This is not the same thing as dropping support. It will still pair with a phone, it will still work, it will still get security updates.

Was hoping series 5 would get at least one more year of support. Apple has been so good with the phones for awhile now and I thought it’d be similar with the watches since they’re more powerful now.

I got a good deal on a gold stainless steel series 4 in 2020. It's still immaculate, running fine on the latest software and lasting all day, and I'm currently thinking I might just have the battery replaced when the time comes, if Apple still offer that for this model as and when!

I thought the Series 5-8 all had the same SIP.

I sold mine anyway, it was just one more thing to keep charged every night even though I really didn't use it for anything except to tell time and as a pedometer. I like my fitbit better. I charge it once every other week or so.
this has been my experience too. almost everything i want from a wrist device, my fitbit did better. and everything i thought the apple watch would bring as an advantage turned out to be glitchy, fiddly, stuttery, and ultimately pointless in my day to day.

i know there are lots of people who love their apple watch, so for those of you, i'm happy. but in my experience, its been an absolute piece of junk thats barely worth the effort to keep charged. i'd go so far as to say it's the opposite of a halo product for me. using it has me wondering if apple knows what a good experience is anymore.

Funny how the Series 5 had a brand new SiP when Apple needed to sell them but now it actually had a recycled Series 4 SiP now that Apple wants to drop support. Apple Marketing 101

This would be Planned Obsolescence Pro tactics
I wonder if the 2020 SE being dropped from iOS updates after 4 years is the reason why Apple posted last week that their devices will receive security updates for 5 years.

SE 2020 was on sale until 2022 so people who bought on in that year will be bummed.

Agreed - it's so slow and the "apps" are so limited it really didn't do much more than the fitbit anyway, and yet I had to charge it every night.

The only thing I genuinely liked about it was it was easier to do Apple Pay with it, I didn't have to awkwardly stare at it like a Face ID iPhone when paying for groceries or whatever. But that wasn't reason enough to deal with everything else I disliked about it.

ok. can you bring the apple watch app to ipad? if you still need to ball and chain apple watch to iphone, require iphone for activation of apple watch. after that, let us manage apple watch on ipad if we choose to do so. thank you.

It took 15 years to get the calculator app - don't hold your breath.

Is there really anything one would really miss if they couldn't get the latest version of watchOS? The only actually worthwhile new features are typically tied to new hardware sensors - most of the other new software additions have basically been bloat.

I know they won't but I wish Apple would introduce an Apple band. I like the notifications and health features. Don't really need the rest. I might go back to a fitbit type device and a conventional watch.

the ability to respond to rcs texts from the watch is my only concern really

Doubt SE 2020 too soon
Bought my SE less than 3 years ago. Lesson learned, don't get anything SE ever again and stop listening to online reviewers. As if the lack of fast charging and on-screen keyboard were not bad enough now they have decided to drop support way too early. I was almost certain that I was gonna get at least another year of updates.
I have an SE, and they came out in 2020... I think I got mine in 2021. That seems like a REALLY short cycle if true.

I only use a smart watch at the gym, so I don't really care about anything other than workout tracking. As long as old WatchOS keeps working with new iOS I guess it doesn't matter much to me.
I would be surprised if they really drop support for the Apple Watch SE, four years seems like an incredibly short lifespan for a watch.

If so, the SE will likely be my last Apple Watch and I'll just go back to my old Casios or look into the new Garmin watches.
It’s official:

Apple said:
watchOS 11 requires iPhone Xs or later with iOS 18 and one of the following Apple Watch models:

  • Apple Watch SE (2nd generation)
  • Apple Watch Series 6
  • Apple Watch Series 7
  • Apple Watch Series 8
  • Apple Watch Series 9
  • Apple Watch Ultra
  • Apple Watch Ultra 2
Not all features are available on all devices.

It’s a little disappointing as my Watch SE still makes it through a day, even when that includes a few hours of workouts, having ~80% battery health. However, watchOS 10 added/created small performance nuisances. Examples include a second or two delay when activating Apple Pay and I need to spin the crown to update the exercise rings after switching to the Fitness app, at least most times. Nonetheless, I think, the watch will be okay for another year or two.

Can't live without mine. Tells the time, date, weather, stores music, payments and loyalty cards, gathers data, used as an alarm, notifications, flashlight, pedometer etc. etc.

I am glad you like yours. I tried but just couldn't find a good use for the Watch for me. At least, not enough use to justify the price in terms of money and etc.

It’s official:

Oh damn! My kids still use cellular Apple Watch SE 1st gen. I usually 'cycle' through my Apple devices fast enough to not get left behind on updates :(

I assume there will be no issues pairing iOS18 with a watch permanently stuck on watchOS 10? Might sound like a silly question but I've never been in this situation before. And upgrading to new cellular models for two kids is a $600 investment.

Once you get used to waking up with just a vibration on your wrist from Apple Watch... whew I could never go back to a traditional alarm!
