It's a feature. Apple seem to want to push focus & have the status there prominently.then it looks like this is a bug.

Wow! Thanks for making this discovery. I don't think I have noticed that yet, though I have used Low Power mode. Next time I try this mode, I'm going to pay attention to whether the Status comes back.I tried Low Power Mode today and it displays an icon at the usual place. Strangely it can not be clicked. One has to enter Power mode menu manually to disable it again. Bizarre user experience.
This is ridiculous! Give us back the now playing icon, Apple!!I found the mystery to the missing “Now Playing” status. According to this Apple support article:
However, according to the same article, the workout status is supposed to show but it isn’t for me:

Why did Apple remove the Now Playing status? It was working just fine before.
I just posted this in another thread:
“I too, have no icons for active apps like ‘Now Playing’ or active ‘Training’ at the top of the screen. None at all. Series 7 with watchOS 9. Same with my gf’s Series 5 and watchOS 9. I checked all relevant settings, everything’s turned on as it should. I restarted and hard rebooted iPhone (13 Pro Max, iOS 16) and Watch to no effect. This surely must be a bug that more people are experiencing?”.
This is clearly a bug because this support page which was last updated in 09/12/22 shows all the notifications and active app icons as we’ve known them for a long time:

What’s with the workout icon? Nothing about that on the support page. However, they GOTTA HAVE TO put ‚now playing’ back where it belongs. Pushing a button instead of it just being there. It’s insane. It 100% is NOT a bug.
The article you yourself linked to explains it clearly:

The icon for Now Playing ONLY appears in Watch OS 8 and earlier - in Watch OS 9 and later, it does NOT appear.
Ugh. Sorry to hear that. Yeah experiencing similar problems. By the way, pressing the crown and side button together has long been a way to pause a workout.I dunno WTF is wrong with Apple these days.
I just discovered this awfully stupid new “feature” of the missing workout icon this morning while hiking up Waynapicchu. Since the icon is no longer there, you can’t just easily tap it to return to the workout app to see your progress, so then you have to fidget around to get back to the app, but when I did that while climbing up 1200 feet of stairs, I seemed to have accidentally pressed both buttons together, which (also a new stupid feature?) is a shortcut to pause the workout. I didn’t figure out for 10 mins, so lost a chunk of data recording.
There’s a setting to disable the shortcut, I later discovered.
The workout status is not a complication. The missing icon on your watch face after you’ve upgraded the watchOS is a complication that needs to be relinkedI had a missing icon on my watch face. I went back into the face setting and had to choose the app for that area and it worked. Its like the face knew what show be there once I updated, however, it had to be re0linked if that makes sense. Go back into the watch face and choose the apps and it will show up and remind
A number of us have reported via the web feedback bug reporting system, but I have done it through the support system.Update: Apple support unable to resolve missing active status for workout and phone at top of Watch face so far. I have even reset and erased my Watch. Apple does not seem aware of the bug. I think more people need to report this issue?
Gotcha, thanks! Just curious since they seemed unaware somehow, but pretty common based on threads.A number of us have reported via the web feedback bug reporting system, but I have done it through the support system.
Unfortunately, I’m not so sure if Apple will fix this in time. There’s a Shortcut bug that appeared with WatchOS 8 and this issue still hasn’t been fixedGotcha, thanks! Just curious since they seemed unaware somehow, but pretty common based on threads.
