Hi,

do you think Apple will let Series 3 update to watchOS 9?

The hardware is quite lagging behind (8 Gb of memory instead of 16, and the SoC is still 32-bit), but, on the other side, they are still directly selling them.

It’ll probably be supported for a while longer; it’s the cheapest option, it’s nearly given away during holiday sales and actually given away by companies offering fitness programs, etc., so it’s pretty popular.

Plus, they have to stop selling it first. Would be nice to have it replaced by the SE; some recent sales have dropped the SE near S3 pricing so maybe that’ll happen this year.

But then what they offer ?

The year's series model, the se, and ?

SE2, S8, and Explorer.

Not sure what they could do with the SE to make it a generational leap yet have a compelling difference with the S7/S8. Keeping the current hardware but refreshing with new colors (Starlight, Midnight, Red, to match the iPhone SE perhaps?) and dropping it to $199 is easiest to imagine. Maybe a tougher glass material or fast charging.

As for the rugged or flat-edged Watch, doubt it’s happening. People wanting the Watch to look like a Fitbit are confusing to me.

I would have said no, but as they are still selling the Series 3, why would they not update it?

I have an S3, and it's plenty fast enough.
