If you did spill something bad, like Coke, in your laptop, why can't people just submerge them in distilled water and then let them dry?

I've read about a guy who once a year takes apart his desktop and cleans it out with water then puts it back together a few days later. :)

I did this with my cell phone. It worked great.

If I were in a situation like this I'd put my device in a breathable cotton bag and cover it with sugar, preferably the raw stuff since it's big and easy to clean up. Sugar is incredibly hydroscopic and would dry it better than rice.

I would rap my device in a shamwow. Come on, its made in Germany so it must be good. :p

distilled water? thats odd. But its true, pure water is not a conductor. Your mac is more than likely dry by now. It doesnt take a week for water to evaporate. Setting inside where the humidity is low is the best thing for it.

I'm tempted to turn it on....it's been around 16 hours since the incident. Maybe tonight to be on the safe side. Another thing. I barely took the battery out now. Not yesterday evening...there is no evidence of humidity whatsoever

Sooooo, should I try and fire it up? It's been exactly 24 hours! I've had it for the past 5 hours on the porch table in the shade but with a dry 94F breeze.

Theoretically if it was pure distilled water you could have turned it on immediately with no effects.

Theoretically if it was pure distilled water the computer could run underwater with no effects.

This one I find a little hard to believe. Is Arrowhead Distilled water from Albertsons considered "pure distilled water" I hope so.

seeing as its distilled water, id suggest booting it up and doing somethign intensive with the machine... handbrake, encoding, etc... make that sucker flex some muscle, the cpu and gpu are known to reach 80C under considerate load, this will aid rid whatever condensation or moisture there may be left.

Wow! Newbie here...how do i do handbrake, encoding etc??

Haha Handbrake refers to the dvd ripping app ;). What Panzo meant was try to rip DVD's that you have or do some heavy encoding or pretty much anything that would warm up your MBP (high processor usage).

On a side note, if it IS pure distilled water, it should be safe to turn it on now, but even if you're slightly unsure, id recommend waiting at least another day or so to be safe.

I've looked over the pics from ifixit but I can't see any LDI stickers on the 17" uMBP...

I though it was a myth that Apple implemented LDI stickers on the mbps

It is absolutely true what zorahk says. H20 can not conduct, its the salt (and other thingys) that conduct the electricity in ground/mineral water.

But it is not healthy to drink pure H2O, it's not poisonous but too large quantities can deminiralise your body... that's why someone asked what you were doing with it and I find it hard to believe you are drinking it, unless it's on doctors advice or something...

#1 I like the taste...they sell it next to "drinking water" and "spring water" so I assume they intend for you to drink it.

#2 Makes coffee taste great and makes your coffee machine last longer. :)

#3 From what I'm reading I guess I'm darn lucky I was drinking that opposed to something else:)

I'm turning it on this evening...will keep you posted. Little worried since I didn't turn it off "immediately" I was too worried about drying up as much of the water as possible first, even turned it upside down while I was drying...more worried about HDD damage at this point as I shook it a little ( not too much) to dry it out the best I could, then shut it down. Maybe 5 mins after the splash.

I tried the zCover silicone keyboard cover and the kbcovers.com model and both very quite thick and interfered with typing a good amount.

I then bought the Moshi Clearguard and this is the thinnest one on the market I believe. I'd be lying if I said it won't affect your typing but its the least intrusive keyboard cover I've seen. Only thing is its not silicone-y so it doesn't grip your MBP as much as the other products do, so a gust of wind can just blow it right off. Good luck with the Power On!

It Works!!!

I'm pleased to announce that I just turned my MBP on and it seems to be working flawlessly so far!!!, I was worried about the superdrive, but put in a CD and it's importing songs and both speakers play perfectly, and check all the keys and so far so good! I was worried about the right speaker since water fell in there too. Now I turned caffeine on, and I'm gonna import bunch of CD's so the fans can work and get it nice and hot to perhaps evaporate any moisture that might be lingering, but I doubt it. Had on my coffee table all night with the ceiling fan full blast :D

P.S. Thanks to all for the suggestions and putting up with my OCD a*%
And, if you need to drink anything while working on your MBP...make sure its distilled water LOL
time to order a Moshi cleargaurd too!

I hate to derail it, but everyone in this thread is right:

Drinking distilled water is bad for you, especially for your teeth. Your teeth will not get the minerals and will eventually weaken. You need to drink water with something in it. Also the minerals in the water are what give it its taste: there is natural spring water from Spain that almost tastes like saltwater because of the minerals in it. (if you want this, try the brand Vichi Catalan)

I would know, my grandpa sells fine imported bottled waters. (of course, if you want to buy some, let me know. ;))

In this case...drinking distilled water saved my $1500 MBP

This is actually true. I mean, the fans and stuff would mess up but it would work. BUT, if there was the slightest contamination, your screwed.

Well, if your in the US. Just drink tap water, its cheaper and just as clean. Its also fluoridated, so its good for you teeth.

Not screwed...been using my MBP for about 7 hours now, burning CDs, etc....
thankful that I drank distilled water when the spill/splash whatever u wanna call it happened. Some of you are pretty silly with the unhealthy comments. I'm sure I get enough minerals with all the BEER I drink too.

mmm beeerrrrr

Dump beer on there and see where that gets you.
