I'd like to see waterproofing, but I don't want flaps. Nor do I see Apple doing that. So there's that.

Everyone except Apple will make phones in the next 2 years that are waterproof and when Apple eventually does make iphone 8 waterproof everyone in the industry will say Samsung has had this for 4 years.

But apple will do it right.

The S5's water resistance can be entirely annoying at times. Not only do you have to open the cover to the charging port every time you want to charge (and close it when you are done), but some times for whatever reason, it doesn't think you have closed it well and you have to keep trying to seal it to stop the phone from pestering you about the damn door.

Same with the back battery cover, although I remove that less.

If Apple uses a company like Waterfi, then I am all for it (no doors/covers). But otherwise, it is more of a hassle than it is worth.

I don't think we'll see a waterproof phone anytime soon.

It requires a bunch of ugly flaps and apple is just not about that life.

Just fyi, the new s5 mini is waterproof and it doesn't have those ugly flaps you're speaking of. So it can be done without them.

nice if there was a water resistant option as opposed to a thinner option
