“Apple may be quiet on AI, but it’s also the biggest buyer of AI companies.”

The power of silence in a noisy world.

Has anyone considered that users might not want to go down the AI rabbit hole? There might be cases where it's useful and some where it's not. But the tech is being shoved down our throats as if it's some magical solution even though it hasn't yet been fully vetted. I just hope Apple gets it right.

Nobody is forcing you to use it

Have you tried ChatGPT? It puts Siri to such absolute shame that the only thing for Apple to do at this point is upgrade Siri to the same technology, or disable it entirely.

For many years now Siri has been a joke, stuck at its exact same level of initial functionality. In the last year the difference between that and actual useful AI has become so stark as to be embarrassing.

It’s been embarrassing since basically shortly after release, but now it’s to the point that Siri feels absolutely broken and useless, even more-so by comparison to something that actually works.

I hate to say this but Linux is sounding more appealing each day. I want control of my well everything. But I have literally used Apple my whole life and it’s what I know. AI scares me.

AI will be integrated into some Apps.
However when using AI the burden of proof as far as Accuracy and Truth falls on the user Just like everything else in life

AI is great but if all they use it for is auto completion on the keyboard I am not interested. I don't want AI to guess my thoughts. I want to ask it questions in English and get good answers or to control my device functions. I hold out very little hope that Apple will do this right and in a timely manner without buying a company that already has a good product. Microsoft is in the lead on this. Might be time for them to relaunch a phone

I’m a bit sceptical here because we are at a crossroads where AI from big name players like OpenAI is getting markedly worse and being crippled, right at a time that Apple, a company known to very be behind the curve, is supposed to be jumping in? How is this going to pan out? We are already watching accuracy plummet, length of answers shrink, copyright issues fester, and wokeness dominate the algorithms. How is a company that isn’t an expert in the space going to contribute?

Music playlists have never been something I got too excited about, but in this case it seems like there is massive potential. Imagine being able to describe exactly the kind of music you want to hear, which era, genre, and band/s you want the music to sound like, and even which you don't like, all at once. Or, describe the exact context of the event you're playing music within. Or a kind of project you're working on and seeking creative inspiration for.
I agree, but so far there is no algorithmic or ML understanding of music yet. The recommendation algorithms of music streaming services are fairly serviceable (my main experience being with YouTube Music), but they clearly rely on “what others also liked who liked stuff you already liked”, not on any understanding of musical contents. And I suspect that Apple’s “AI” play lists will likewise only be based on metadata and user behavior.

Hope they keep working on stuff they introduce, instead of introducing just for introduction. Dynamic Island is an amazing piece of creative solution which was applauded but abandoned and nothing great has come to fruition.
The incentives for employees of tech companies work against that. You get promoted for introducing new features, not for maintaining existing ones (or fixing bugs).

Under promise and over deliver?

Let's hope so.

Those all seem like things that should've launched last year.

If Apple can't come up with a Siri that is truly a good reliable personal assistant, who can look in your data, talk to other (selected) apps or services and be helpful, they're woefully behind.

I mean, quite frankly, the above is what Siri was meant to be in 2011.

Apple is on schedule to announce a series of generative AI-based tools at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports.

In the latest edition of his "Power On" newsletter, Gurman reaffirmed and expanded upon previous comments related to Apple's plans to announce a series of new tools based on generative AI at WWDC as part of iOS 18, including a revamped version of Siri.

The company has reportedly been testing its "Ajax" large language model since early 2023 and is considering using it to add auto-completion and auto-summarizing features to its core apps, as well as its productivity suite including Pages and Keynote. A new version of Xcode will apparently feature AI for code completion. It is also looking at integrating AI into Apple Music to automate playlist creation, in addition using the technology for troubleshooting problems with AppleCare.

However, Gurman believes that "the totality of Apple's generative AI vision will take at least into 2025 to fully scale," suggesting that not all planned features will arrive this year, and competitors like Samsung will do everything they can to highlight Apple's current "deficiency" in the AI space in the coming months.

Many of you in the comments have a very limited perception of the capabilities of fake AI. Probably because you have the doom and gloom propaganda drilled into your head. True AI probably won't be possible for another 100 years. What we have now is software and algorithms being marketed falsely as AI to generate more sales. Better and smarter software will ALWAYS benefit you as the consumer. From doing things like researching for you, assisting with in mobile tasks faster and smarter, translation, and many others. The possibilities are truly endless. Where this fake AI will really benefit is once we get Augmented Reality glasses. Not VR headsets, but see through glasses. Here an AI equivalent is absolutely necessary and will change how we operate as humans entirely. Think on screen directions with arrows pointing where to go, price comparisons in stores, live research and history notes, mathematical solutions while working like live measuring or speed density mass etc calculations. Really you have to open up your mind this will be revolutionary. Real AI won't come in your lifetime so your doom and gloom can be passed onto the next generations

Hopefully this will improve Siri’s restaurant recommendations too. Right now, she doesn‘t so much as filter fast food restaurants out when asking for 5-star restaurants for date night. Wasn’t going this direction when I started the post, but could AI improve one’s dating life? Ha!

I think the example of telling Siri to create two different timers shows its weakness currently. It is not multitasking at all.

Samsung can mock Apple however much they want, but in the end the numbers speak for themselves.
That said for once I have to thank Microsoft.
I gotta say, the upcoming AI features that are about to come to Windows 11 look quite good, and I'm sure this has put apple under pressure to provide some similar functionality.
I'm a simple mac user, therefore the most exciting thing so far would be the Music implementation.
