Or Apple maps please?

Never used Waze but read everywhere how it's better and everyone can't wait until on CarPlay, so wouldn't like to know thanks

It’s social based live updates for traffic and incident reporting.

Edit: can also report police and speed traps

On CarPlay does it show speed cams? So you have to have a route planned for it or show them just as your driving along as well?

Can someone explain to me how Waze is better than Google Maps?

Their UIs are quite different (you can see it for yourself), so some people prefer it over Google’s. Then Waze has a live reporting feature, fuel prices, police reports, speed limits, etc. that Google Maps do not have. Waze was designed to be a SatNav for cars, Google Maps was designed as a multi-purpose mapping app, with driving being just one of its many functions.

See my comments on Waze & Google Maps. The major difference with Apple Maps, however, and a very important one, is how quickly Waze accurately updates and shows road layout changes. For road layout update speeds we are talking many months (Apple Maps) vs days to several weeks (Waze).

However, Waze also tends to plan quite bizarre routes just to save time, while Apple Maps goes for convenience and bigger roads, that tends to make a drive smoother.

If you are in a hurry or in a totally unknown place, I would give Waze a go as a backup solution.

As others mention, it is crowd-sourced traffic information that will dynamically alter your route to take the shortest path around obstructions. It has pretty easy map editing to share your local knowledge around areas if you so choose, and also allows interaction, rankings, and social features with with other Wazers, but that is hardly required. Waze and other such services are a prime reason that back roads get deluged in traffic when there is an accident on a main road. Our area completely locked up with cars on secondary roads a year or so back. I'm still on the fence about smart traffic routing as local neighborhoods can get royally s***wed by the propeller heads and their location agnostic algorithms in such instances. But I digress.

Uggh - I don't want Waze on my radio screen, I like it on my phone. Even when I move the waze app off carplay, it still takes over my radio. Anyone know how to make it so waze won't use carplay? It's awful.

Completely agree! I was really happy when I heard CarPlay would support 3rd party apps but then realised my headunit is badly positioned for sat nav, I also want to use my screen as the map output but keep the functionality of CarPlay, I can see there are restrictions in place for the apps on CarPlay so I’m guessing this comprise won’t happen :(

For traffic, no maps app is better as Waze is all about reporting accidents, police, heavy traffic, etc.

So I have a 2017 Honda Accord Touring that has built in navigation and car play. This weekend I tried to use Siri to look something up and hoped that it would just display navigation on my screen through Apple Maps but it didn't. Sure I can just type the address in myself, but this is 2018 dammit and I shouldn't have to. Is there a way to get navigation on my phone to display on my cars display? That way I can just be like Hey Siri take me to Burger King (or whatever) and just have it connect with my display instead of having to enter it in myself.
... that’s what CarPlay does. You hold down the voice activation button on your vehicle, Siri chimes and you tell it to take you to Burger King at which point it probably will say and display the 3 closest. You tell it which one, or tap the screen, and it takes you there. Is that not what it did?

Anyone know why they didn’t include the speedometer on the app? I thought I turned it off on my phone but it’s on. I read somewhere that there are some limitations when connected to CarPlay.

If that’s the case it’s a stupid move. I like Waze and really like the speedometer feature. Maybe a future update will allow it?

Nope, Apple restricts any kind of speedometer on CarPlay

I must be missing something here. What would be the purpose of Waze having a speedometer in CarPlay?
The waze app shows the speed limit for the section of road you’re driving. It also shows your actual speed next to the speed limit, giving you the ability to quickly check your speed vs the limit.

It’s a nice feature to have. Some may say it’s redundant with your car’s speedo, but by having it within waze, it’s one less place to glance while you’re driving.

I agree it’s a nice feature. My speedometer is to the right on the cluster and my steering wheel blocks the top portion making it difficult to see when speeds are over 50. Having it on CarPlay i can glance over to the radio and see it. Just nice to have.

What’s odd is I have an aftermarket JVC radio and if I use JVC’s WebLink I get the speedometer displayed. WebLink is buggy and not worth using. CarPlay is way better.

I see. Yeah that does seem redundant to me.

Why waze is better?
Things were mentioned above, like speed cam reporting, reporting of construction sites, potholes, dead animals, bad weather and many other things.
You can enter road closures in the app which will (depending on your status) be live immediately for all other users.

Your routes are fastest, even when they sometimes seems to be strange. Give them a try. ;)

You can edit the maps by yourself online. There’s an awesome, handy map editor. Your changes will be live (mostly) within 2 (or a few) days. Now try that with apple or google maps!!

There’s also a great forum with great people who are absolutely willing to help with any waze related issues.
Many high level editors have a direct contact to wazes HQ. Which is really great for getting direct support or escalating issues. Again... try that with apple or google maps.

About those people ranting about directions via the CarPlay head unit: that’s also an apple related issue.
Well... not an issue for me. I can set waze to “warnings only” which won’t give you directions, but warnings for speed cams or reports.
Or I can toggle to noting at all.
You can also check your app settings before connecting to CarPlay. Here you can change the volume of the voice output or change the directions for TTS (Text To Speach - all
Steeetnames are given) to a short output (for “turn left/right” directions only)

Feel free to contact me for more information.

You guys miss the important/ interesting thing about wazes speedo: it doesn’t only show your actual speed, but it also shows the actual limit when you’re speeding and forgot about which speed limit was on your road.

Apple Maps also shows speed limits, assuming you are willing to trust it over the signs by the side of the road, which I’ve found to be a bad idea. There’s such a thing as trying to do too much and it sure sounds like a case of that to me.

Well it’s not about trusting an app more Than the roadsign. But I often forget what’s the actual speedlimit. So I’m happy to have a remembering tool aside.
I don’t have speed limits in Apple Maps. Perhaps that feature is available in the US only? Well at least not in my part of the world.

Could be, I don’t know. It’s fairly new to Apple maps here.

I agree on most of these points. However, I would like to see some features of Google Maps ported over to Waze, in particular lane assistance. This would probably not happen as they use different map data, but that really is a killer feature.

My quick 2 cents after using it twice...
The UI is clunky, even more so then the iPhone UI.
On my iPhone, it will ask me, are you driving to work? It hasn't done that on CarPlay but that could be a GPS issue in my garage.
If I press the favorite star, then select Work, it does nothing but spin a few seconds.
I needed to go to the search and pick Work from a list.

It correctly displayed an accident and vehicle on the side of the road on my way home last night which is why I love Waze.
No speedometer but it does show the speed limit which is an improvement of Google Maps.

I haven't tried a voice search or any other settings. It seems pretty bare.
