Gotcha. How are you liking it ? For me the biggest annoyance was the dimensions, and as such the air is worse than a heavier pro . Just too wide , specifically
I really only took a couple days to get used to it. The thinness makes it a lot easier to use one-handed for me. Always wanted a bigger screen, just not the added weight so it’s everything I wanted, really.

Son still has a 13 mini and it's pretty great, I miss it at times for sure.

I will say the 16e is the closest you can get now and is a solid upgrade from the 13 mini. No, it's not as small, but it's the smallest of the current line-up, and as light as the Air. It feels good in the hand, has great battery life (better than the 17 in my usage, though the 17 is solid for sure), and will be pretty future proofed with its 8gb of RAM and A18 processor. Unless you're addicted to the ultra-wide camera (which it lacks), I think the 16e is about as good as a mini-lover can get now.

The regular 17 is super nice as well, but is a bit larger and heavier than the 16e, though it comes with a nicer screen and better camera system. But it's also $200 more than the 16e.

But either way I agree with others, the Mini won't be coming back...
Funny you mention the much maligned e. It is on my list to replace my 15 Pro (it replaced my 13 mini for a litany of reasons that are no longer overly valid and thus the Air and e are on my list… but it will likely be years yet before I replace it)

I’ve just stopped using my personal phone for work and got a SIM card for old iphone 6s plus and I thought I was going to hate but i still find it massively capable.

I would of thought mini would be even better than mine so id just keep it if i was you.

Can you not just grt by with chatgpt web app instead of Apple Intelligence ?

My opinion (as a 13 mini owner) is the big mistake is trying to run/upgrade to iOS 26. If you stay on 18 as long as it’s supported by security updates it will stay relevant much longer. The 13 mini works fine today and will stay that way as long as you don’t try to keep up with 26. Probably similar to running that 6s frozen in time on its old iOS version.

Anyway, I have 26 installed on my ‘backup’ phone and it’s god awful. No compelling reasons to upgrade -at all-

I'd say there is space now for a new "mini" but not as small as the 13.
I was hoping the SE would be based on the X/XS so that it would be smaller in size bit it wasn't.

I doubt they will make a new "mini" but if they would, why not recycle the X/XS with modern internals. Great size, also thicknesswise.

As much as I would like to see another iPhone Mini, or even better - an OG SE sized phone, as part of their lineup, unfortunately the chances are slim... so for now the best upgrade option would be the 16e/17e.

The 16e is the closest in size to the X/XS and weighs a bit less.

I got a 16 after my 13 mini and it felt like a brick. Now the mini feels comically small in comparison, but the 16 is still quite big imho. Always feels a little clumsy, when reaching for control center with my thumb, and it doesn't fit as nice in a front pocket as the old one. I was expecting some more use of that screen estate, but when I got it, most things were just bigger - to a part where I felt like a senior citizen, getting an accessibility phone, because precision doesn't work anymore (I'm well into my 40ies, so small text is getting harder to read - but the mini was not to small in this regard) Apart from that, there's not much difference. Sound is noticeable louder, battery is better (and newer), usb-c is usb-c. camera is slightly better, but still a puny phone camera, and it seems a little faster. won't notice the screen differences unless i put them side by side. If I want something to read, I take an ipad. So, yes, we need a smaller phone, but I doubt that we'll get one, unless apple decides to make a flip-style foldable. Which they won't, because the ar-glasses will have taken off before the price of foldables has gone down enough. And then, computing will be separated from the I/O device - which might give us a small computing unit with a little status screen - a.k.a. small phone again.

If the base iPhone 16 used the exact chassis dimensions as the 15 Pro (basically smallest 6.1” body), this would have been the best upgrade for Mini users imho. If the iphone air was a flip phone, this would also be an option (and sold better for sure).

A flip/fold phone is not something I would get as a Mini replacement.

I don’t foresee the mini ever coming back, but I hope that when they release the anniversary iPhone 20 with a rumoured bezel-less design, they won't increase the screen size again. So with narrower bezels, it will be between the iPhone X and 8 in size, especially the width. With a more elegant design overall, it will be good enough for one-handed use. I had the iPhone 8 before the mini and found the size to be still acceptable size-wise. Even 15 pro was ok because of reduced width and rounded edges.

I agree, the mini didn't sell because of it's size, it didn't sell because it's lack of features. Make it slightly thicker, give it three cameras and promotion display and decent battery and it sell.

I'm shocked the 16e wasn't a smaller form factor, but it's locked in now.

I don't think they will offer another small form factor any time soon. They are currently offering 5 different phones each year. That number might go to 6 whenever the fold comes out, but they are also eyeing a bezelless version and a flip version. Maybe the flip version could meet the needs of a mini user? I think there'd have to be an android model that was mini that really took off, but I just don't see that happening.
