On my iPhone 12 Pro confirmation e-mail, it said ". We recommend using a new SIM to get the most up-to-date features." Does anyone know what up-to-date features they're referring to?

bump. i'm wondering the same thing after seeing this. i'm coming from an at&t sim on an 11 pro. would using the new sim be required?

It also says "or insert an activated sim", so no worries, unless you have Sprint. I have AT&T, their sim cards are already 5g compatible, just need a 5g device.

It should be noted that many AT&T plans, including mine from just a couple of years ago, do not offer 5G support. The providers are going to leverage this as a way to force people into newer and likely more expensive plans.

Last month I switched over my family unlimited plan on AT&T to the newest unlimited plan. Monthly price dropped $18 and now we have 15GB of hotspot and 5G vs 10GB of hotspot per line.

That's fantastic! There is definitely the possibility that a newer plan is a better deal. But many legacy plans are indeed cheaper and carriers would love to get people off of those. 5G will help make that happen.

In my case going from what I have to a current equivalent, I'll pay about $15 more per month.

If that’s the case, I can switch tp Spectrum wireless and save $10 a month. Can not test the new phone until next week to find out. Currently on an ATT Shared data plan.

updated sim card profile
I do not know what exactly that ment either? Maybe a good idea tho. Somewhere some how there has to be a data base and associated firmware that defines your cell provider's terms of service.

Switched to unlimited plan
we sorta did the same thingy last year. The only fly on the gry head was our teathering speeds went down to 2G levels. Otherwise totally unlimited in every way; data, voice text...

I’m not 100% sure on the technical stuff about 5G. But from what I read, isn’t AT&T’s “5G Plus” the true 5G we are all hoping for? They have regular 5G which isn’t as fast, but that is the one more widely available versus the Plus which is limited

Had the same question about using my existing SIM on Verizon since I bought the unlocked model. Wasn't worried about getting 5G but wanted to make sure it didn't affect my regular signal. Found this, so it looks like I should be good:

i'm currently using T-Mobile on my 11 Pro Max, i'm on the IUP, planning on re-up with 12 pro max on 11/6. does T-Mobile's sim card already activated for 5G? i guess doesn't matter since my 12 Pro Max will arrive with a sim card, and i assume that's the new sim card OP was referring to.

same question for me as well and I did see your link above and it helped, but to be on the safe side I went ahead and ordered a new Sim card from Verizon. Unknown if I’ll use it, but I’ll have it just in case.

I contacted Vodafone UK today after reading this thread, to tell them I have a 12 Pro coming.

They're sending me out a new Sim on Monday.

Thanks for reminding me about SIMs. Need to remember to switch my eSIM when I get the new phone... love eSIMs
I’m also on eSim. My pre-ordered 12 Pro will arrive activated. Does it mean the eSim will automatically switch to the new phone? Or will the new phone come with a physical Sim?

Interesting. I use e-sim, so I wonder how that'd work.
I am wondering, too as I use eSIM right now.

T Mobile said they released a new security requirement to access the 5G SA network. So without the new SIM card you can't access the mid band 5G mmwave.
Cost: $12
I just hope they don't make me change plans....

I got an e-mail from T-Mobile this morning about the iPhone 12 pre-order $200 loyalty discount for those customers who have been a T-Mobile customer for at least 5 years. In that e-mail is this paragraph:
Even better, you don’t have to change your plan. Nationwide 5G access is already included at no extra cost so you can do more things in more places.

For T-Mobile users, you want the SIM card that says R15 on it which I'm sure will ship with T-Mobile iPhones

Am I reading this correctly? They sent you a new Sim card and it cost you $12? Verizon is sending me a new Sim card and it cost me a zip.
