Oh yeah - got that....

Imagine how sweet it would be if Apple implemented a way to quickly reply to a text in 3.0.

Example: You are in Safari catching up on news and you get a text, wouldn't it be nice to be able to reply right then and there to that text and continue reading in Safari without having to go back into it? The whole having to open the SMS app and what not ruins the "flow" of the iPhone.

This feature can also be used for games (Get a text while in game, game pauses automatically, quick reply text, continue playing ;) )

Thoughts?

Oh yeah - got that on my samsung omnia - the BUSINESSMAN's iphone :-D

BTW - when is everyone going to stop calling games "applications" ??

It's because Omnia runs on Windows Mobile and that is a standard feature on several Windows Mobile phones I tried. Also, I remember seeing this feature on Nokia N85 or Nokia 5800.

:( Hopefully we will get this too. Since Apple is slowly getting us everything we have been asking for:D

This is one of the benefits of being able to run multiple apps - while busy in one app, you can temporarily open another and when you close it you are right back in the app you started with. Going back to the home screen every time just breaks the flow of activity.

Feeling your pain, guys ... but....

This is the risky game that Apple has entered into.
Don't get me wrong, I love apple. But the rest of the industry won't be lagging behind much longer. The Omnia is proof of that. And Nokia has some very competitive stuff coming out as well. How about that Verizon Hub? Is Apple watching that one? Or is that another thing they SAY they can do better but won't? .... and BB will get the Storm right eventually....
If apple is just going to throw a few crumbs out with every revision, they are going to be dusted rather quickly; at least as far as the business world is concerned. (Look at the abysmal failure in India - China could be even a bigger disaster). The iPhone will only be taken seriously as a gaming device (that interrupts you every minute and a half with a phone call). And people are never going to arrive at a situation in which they must relinquish their phone whenever the need for an independent GPS device arises. Sorry, but I still cant understand how people expect to navigate safely and properly in a car with the same device that they are taking calls on; AND with no SPEAKERPHONE. I just think that serious business people like myself are realizing some of the utterly ridiculous premises that serve as the foundation of the concept behind the iPhone. Only about 1% of the apps I have seen are truly useful; and like I said earlier, for a businessperson - games are not "apps".
And I'm glad I can run windows on my MB cause I can use it to sync my Omnia without getting "itunes" all over it.:D
I wouldn't hold on to those shares too long, boys :p

The iPhone has a speaker phone. You can even talk while doing other stuff because of it. I agree apple will have some needed competition, but it's just silly to act like they have a failed business model.

I have an app that will have my new sms message popup at the lockscreen and I can reply from there, and I also have an add on that lets me run other apps in the background. :)

Agreed that Apple will need to do some bigger soon, since the market is being flooded with touch screen devices

My guess is like what someone else said in this thread, have the SMS App slide up and when you press send, it'll slide back down. Sort of like when you go into the Pictures app and choose a picture to email.

Although allowing you to reply straight from the popup would be better. In fact, I wish the popup would go away all together, Android's window curtain is better, but whatever...

This would be a great feature, another thing is when the phone is locked and you get an SMS you have to unlock and open the SMS app to show that you read the text I think you should be able to dissmiss the SMS right on the lock screen.

YES!

Quick reply is great on a jailbroken phone. Apple really needs to get on this.

The SMS app does not run in the background. Only the notifications run in the background.

Yes it does.
Hit send on a message and quit out of the app before it sends.
The message will still be sent even though you don't have the app open.

I just want a better notification system. Imho, it's the weakest thing right now (with iPhone 3.0 features included) in the iPhone. ESPECIALLY with push notifications coming out, the "pop-up" notification system is becoming HIGHLY annoying for me.

I'm really hoping for an entire revamp of the notification system in 4.0.

4.0? Noooo, that will probably be released summer next year with another new iPhone :(. I don't understand how can a small group of programmers like the one's that have made BiteSMS and iRealSms for Cydia can make such usefull features and Apple cannot:( Heck, if you can't do it, hire siome of them and make it:p

When I meant 4.0, I meant the OS 4.0. Since 3.0 is due to be released & there hasn't been any evidence put forth yet of updating notifications, the SOONEST we can expect an update to the notification system is in 4.0.

Ultimately, I want the pop-up paradigm to die a nasty death. It is utterly distracting and terrible - add in push notifications and it just gets even worse.

Notifications is where iPhone is the absolute weakest imho. Take a look at how the G1 handles notifications:

Notifications can be called up at anytime, but immediately hide away when not in use. I'm really hoping Apple comes up with a system similar to this or more elegant than the current methodology.
