I doubt that it will have 3GB of RAM when even the 6th gen iPad that came out earlier this year has two, but I also don't really see why it needs it.

Pencil works just fine on 2018 iPad in Procreate; a few hiccups, but that is memory related. Getting along pretty well, but I know I need more memory due to my work flow.
Sure, it’ll be better on an iPP with ProMotion, but I can roll without it.

If it has pencil support, 3 gigs would be better for more memory hungry apps (like Procreate) and for multitasking.
Well, the 6th gen iPad has Pencil support and with its larger screen is definitely better suited for multitasking, and functions just fine with 2GB.

My daughter and son in law were admiring my 2018 iPad with keyboard case and Apple Pencil recently. Will be tempted to give it to them and get myself the new Mini (which is what I really wanted originally). 🙂

For non intensive apps, no argument. But I multitasked like dickens on my iPad Mini 4 too. I have a hard time multitasking on the 2018, some of which I pinpoint on memory due to freezes, page reloads and slower responses.
On the 2018: I am noticing an increased amount of bottlenecking in Procreate when I try to do shading and other things. Also Safari is a mess (Nothing new there). As apps grow, stuff happens, I get that. I get that my workflow is not yours too. Eventually, I will move on and this 2018 will be fine for mom.
While I won’t be surprised if the rumored Mini just a cheaper mini 4, I would be delighted if it’s closer to the Pro. And I’d pay the introductory Pro price ($649) to get a Mini with the specs I desire.

It's clear that what you want is a Pro, but I highly doubt that the Mini will ever be the device that Apple markets to that segment, especially when the only other small tablets out there are cheap glorified eReaders. Most people aren't going to buy a 7.9" device for extensive multi-tasking and productivity.

Just saying: I don't care about the masses or what they use the Mini for. Apple will make what they will make. I know that. I was simply stating what I would like in a new iPad Mini.
I am pleasantly surprised to see that a Mini 5 may be released soon. I currently own a Mini 4 with 128 GB and use it for web reading, an e-reader, and a media consumption device. I LOVE the Mini. It still runs fine on iOS 12, so I don't see buying the new one, at least not right at release, unless it is more compelling than I think it will be.
I suspect the Mini 5 will be a souped up Mini 3 with a faster processor, more RAM and possibly pencil support. The display probably won't be as good as the Mini 4. I suspect the Mini was still selling well enough to keep it in the lineup despite its relative neglect in their product line, plus I suspect it still sells well to the vertical market and and even education. I see lots of repurposed Mini's as cash registers in many places of business to this day.
I still would not be surprised by early 2020, that both the 9.7" iPad and the Mini would be merged into a single model that has the 2018 iPad Pro/iPhone X design language with Face ID and a very small bezel. That way a 9.7" screen could have a form factor not much bigger than an iPad Mini. Sort of an iPad XR. That is probably the model that would replace my Mini 4.

What I don't get is why this guy, who is usually chock full of details, knows almost nothing about the device other than that plans to release it exist. Unless maybe Apple's doing the manufacturing with suppliers that this guy doesn't know very well.

I think if released in October the Mini 5 will have an A10 if released in spring 2019 an A11 with 2 gig of Ram and 100 dollar more than the regular 9,7 with 32gig
right now the outdated mini is more expensive than the current 9.7 so i dont see Aplle going to change that pricing difference....

I could see Apple making the Mini 5 in 128gb only and pricing it the same as the Mini 4, and then of course discontinuing the Mini 4.

They are likely to take away the laminated display and make it thicker like the 2018 iPad. Once they do that then it’s not an upgrade on the mini 4 for me. I don’t see them giving it premium treatment.
IF true re the rumour from Kuo I’m curious what they’ll do.
I see one of two options:
1) iPad (7.9”) similar to current 9.7” iPad treatment
2) iPad Pro (7.9” or larger?) getting the new design and having 3 size options moving forward.
Most likely will be 1. But damn a new iPad Pro design with the size of the mini would be something.
Also, I think the mini name will be gone.

That seems like the most plausible scenario. But then again, the 2018 iPad has been marketed by Apple as a device for the educational market. I don't think the Mini 5 will be.
My Mini 4 still runs beautifully (it is still on iOS 10.x) though slightly slower than my 2018 iPad.
If Apple were to indeed produce a Mini 5 that is a Mini 4 with updated processor and support for Apple Pencil at a reasonable (non-Pro) price it would be hard for me to resist.

if it becomes a smaller "cheap" ipad yes i would agree for you. However, personally as a mini4 owner, I just want 120hz and smaller bezels. I'd even be ok with last gen processing if they 10.5" the mini4, aka 120hz, slightly bigger screen (8.5"?) and thinner bezels (not quite X or Xs levels)
Yeah, this is the part that has me worried.....the rumor mentions a “lower-cost LCD display.” Does this mean that the 5 could have a screen with LESS quality than the 4? If so, WTF?????
My strategy to avoid disappointment is to expect a Mini 3 with an A10 slapped in it. And at $279 or $299 that probably makes the most sense for Apple financially, but I hope I’m pleasantly surprised by something better.

Not necessarily. While it is reasonable to assume that "lower-cost" is referring to the cost of the current Mini display, it MIGHT be in relation to the cost of Pro-Motion screens, or MCK could be mistaken on that part.
On the flipside, I don't think Apple is going to continue to have 3 different panel technologies for the iPad line either... There's the non-laminated, Pencil-enabled screen on the 2018 iPad, the current Mini 4 screen, and then the Pro-Motion, Pencil-enabled screens on the Pros.
The Mini 4 screen is by far the best screen on any iPad (Pro or non) IMO. But if Apple were to switch over to the same non-laminated screen that is on the 2018 iPad, then, while mildly disappointing, if it provided Pencil support, 128GB storage for the same price as the 2018 iPad I think it would be a good deal. For people who rely on the Mini for business, that would be a big seller.
I agree with others, at this point I have to prepare myself for maximum disappointment. I’m trying to look forward to only the bare meager bones minimum: the mini still lives, with a SLIGHTLY faster chip (maybe even A9 lol...)—every other aspect about it will be a complete downgrade. That’s what I’m telling myself. Now even if it turns out to be discontinued, I’ll hardly be any more disappointed. Wow how sad.

The 5th gen (2017) and 6th gen (2018) iPads have a "lower quality" display than the 2014 iPad Air 2 and Mini 4 in that they're non-laminated. If that's all they mean I wouldn't worry about it. I went from a Mini 4 to a 6th gen iPad. I stopped noticing/caring about the screen difference in a matter of days.
An updated Mini would be an almost instant buy for me. I don't mind if it doesn't have a laminated screen (I currently use a 2017 9.7) if it has an updated processor. I just hope it's available in a capacity lower than 128GB. I don't need nearly that amount of space, so having a lower capacity (and therefore less expensive) option would be ideal for me.
