You're dumb if u think a coating will solve the problem. What happens when the coating gets worn down... ever thought about that genius?

A coating isn't a solution but that doesn't mean there isn't one. I read some article by an antenna engineer and his idea was to add more sections, so instead of one main antenna there are 2 or more. Then if one is bridged the phone simply switches to the other. In essence you allow the new phone to always work like the iPhone 4 does in the right hand.

. How could someone come up idea to design antenna like this!

So, don't be surprised if external antenna become next trend of smart-phone antenna design.

Mark my words!

How could someone come up with an idea to put the antenna on the outside? Are you serious? Pass me some Kool-Aid bro.

In the immediate future, the wake of Antennagate means that this antenna design would be PR poison for any company that was tempted to duplicate it (at least on a superficial, externally visible aesthetic level).

Give it some time to let the controversy settle down; let Apple refine the design a little more, and if the benefits do end up outweighing the compromises, then you may see some other manufacturers start to express some interest.

Agreed and I think its going to make more manufacturers a little more thoughtful/sensitive to antenna placement vs. hand placement, i.e., holding it and blocking the signal.

Apples external antenna design was a blunder and a mistake. It just goes to show how far Apple was willing to go to make iPhone look unique. Not only do I doubt any manufacturer will adopt this mistake of a design BUT we will not see this defect in next years iPhone.

Why not just make the bottom section out of something non-conductive?

I'm no engineer but I believe that they made the metal band the antenna so it has to be conductive. If they made it plastic, then they would have to find a new location for the antenna

Agreed, and you really have to wonder if Jobs was being truthful in regard to the bloomberg article which detailed apple engineer(s) worried about this very issue. Personally, I think there were engineers at apple warning the executives that this could be a problem.

I doubt it since android is the software and phone makers like HTC, Samsung, Dell, and Motorla design their own phones and don't need to copy apple. Plus why copy a design that has a fatal flaw - you can't hold it and make a phone call.

This is precisely why the tech blogs went crazy...people who don't even own the phone distorting the issue.

But either way I think they could have shifted the break in the antenna to the very bottom, say between the speaker and dock connector then no one would have noticed. (Well...people probably still would have complained about bars dropping when you touched it, but it would be less of an issue because no one holds the phone by the very bottom while in use.)

Only an idiot would deign an external antennna but a bigger idiot would approve it's design for a final product. I'm sure other manufacturers have learned from Apples mistake and will avoid an external antenna. "it's never been done before"- Steve Jobs (we all know why).

This is the truth!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A306 Safari/6531.22.7)

Yes, they probably have already started making prototypes. We will see them all by the end of the year.

But given the hysteria with this problem, clearly my point is such that many people are having issues, making the design a fatal flaw. So much so there's lawsuits brewing, consumer reports still is giving the IP4 a vote of no confidence and we're seeing a high volume of people posting that they're returning the their iPhone 4.

So its great that you guys can make a call on yours but clearly that does not detract from the design flaw.
It may seem like a high number of people are returning their iP4, but in actuality, that's not the case. Weren't you paying any attention to Apple's Friday keynote? Also, Consumer Reports' antenna testing was flawed... :p

This will work...

I'm willing to bet that apple wasn't the first to think of such an antenna design. It seems so obvious. But i'm also sure that that antenna engineers at other companies would have shot that down the second it was suggested because of how many problems it causes.

This is just another case of Apple wanting to showboat and put form over function. Newsflash Apple: A smartphone is FIRST AND FOREMOST a phone. You screw that function up, and i'm not buying your terrible product.

Apple may not have been the first to use an external antenna, but they were the first company to do it right:p

You are indicating that you don't own an iP4? Yet you feel up to complaining about it?

No, i'm saying i'm willing to bet a company thought of that design but their engineers shot it down. And no, it wasn't done right, what planet do you live on? :p

Thread title is stupid and shows the OP's ignorance.

Google/Android doesn't design phone hardware (they got out of that business after the Nexus One). Talk to HTC, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericcson, LG, Pantech, etc and all the other people putting Android on their handsets

Hay everyone let's misunderstand everything

Android handsets have copied the styling of the iPhone for years. I wouldn't be surprised to see one of those 'fine handset companies' you got listed there copy this idea as well.

A little quick to rag on the OP huh? An Android phone is a way of referring to a device. You do not always have to say HTC this or Samsung that.. you can simply refer to it as an Android phone. An Android phone covers all above manufacturers listed. What do you want the thread title to be? "Will see see HTC, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericcson, LG, Pantech, etc copy Apple's antenna design soon?" Not very intriguing. Besides we aren't even directing this at Google.

And that's why Apple is a leading technology company and not a follower. You would learn a lot about that if you read the story behind the development of the original Macintosh.
