this may sound like a crazy idea. but why not get in contact with the people in charge of the ifund, because they will be looking for ideas to seed to up-and-coming developers

Did you read the ideas on that site? The minimum investment that the iFund will put forth as per their FAQ is $100k, are any of those ideas likely to give a return on such an investment? I'm thinking not...

dude, dont freak out. like i said it was crazy and i dont know how the ifund works...

Ideas

I think the idea page is awesome, now most of the ideas on there are not the things I would buy....

I think a Polling ap would be cool, you could put 10-50 of your friends numbers in there with iphones, and say you are sitting around a table with a couple guys and someone asks a question that either nobody agrees on or nobody knows the answer, you could get out your phone, type in the question, then send it out to all your friends in a poll. You would then get instant feedback like a bar chart or something that shows who answered what, who didnt answer, etc....

Now I know you can always look things up on Google and such, but a question like "do you think Johns sister is hot" is not something that google will give you an answer for, but you know your friends would love to give you their opinion through their iphone....

Just an idea, I cant wait to see these apps start rolling in....

Fluff

If there was such an app, I could send you a "photo poll" with her picture and you could tell me if you thought she was hot or not.....

It is just an idea....doubt you can even do something like that, but sure would be cool if you could!

that was just an example of a question you could ask your buddies in a poll......You could take a poll on anything you want....

The problem, of course, with this is there is no guarantee of "instant gratification", since the SDK limits applications to foreground only, your friends would be able to "vote" if and only if they actually launched the app (presuming they knew that a new poll was available).

Unless your app worked by sending an email to them that had a link to launch the app, but that would get very annoying very fast I think

Most of the suggestions on the page are garabge.
It's like the medical software that was demoed, but with all usefulness removed.

You like dogs? How about an app that shows you pictures of dogs?
You like flags? How about an app that shows you pictures of flags?
You like [anything]? How about an app that shows you pictures of [anything]?

Poor app store:(

It should work as good as the AIM app would work, now how well that is, I dont know...

That made me laugh. Good job.

To the OP, I applaud your effort to get people thinking of new ideas, but I couldn't find one app on your list that I would ever purchase, or even download for free for that matter. The only one that was even slightly interesting to me was the home movie one, but we already have YouTube for that. Perhaps this is why I'm not as over-the-top excited for the SDK coming out as a lot of people were, because the iPhone already does almost everything I would like it to do. Sure there are a few extras that would be nice, such as iChat, but I'm going to hazard a guess that 99% of apps created for the iPhone are going to be crap that no one really needs (such as Sky Blue so wittily pointed out above) and won't do much more than just fill up your phone memory.

Except that an app built with the SDK cannot manipulate other applications directly except via registered URL handlers-- which, in this case, would cause the email application to come up and present the user with a "send an email" screen.

Now, if one were to use SMTP directly, perhaps opening a socket onto an external mail server or something this could be mitigated, but then you've got the whole security on the external server to deal with (don't want to make it easy to spam through).

hmmm... hadn't considered using email before as a notification mechanism. One might be better suited to using SMS instead (instant popup and all that) as long as the user could choose their poison so-to-speak (due to potential cost of SMS messages).

Although I suspect this particular app might be best suited to a web interface, the notification idea is intriguing, must consider it...

To be fair, I sent the link to the page around to some friends and to the wife and whatnot intending it to be a joke. Two different people came back with something along the lines of "I'd pay (up to)$5 for that" -- I had to call them and ask if they were serious or not.

While I'm not particularly impressed with any of the suggestions either, that doesn't mean that the lay person might not find value in something.

Food for thought.

I just like when it says things like:
" Ideally, tapping the icon would start the recording process without any "application" opening. A separate icon for listening to recorded messages could be available."

No, that is not ideal. That is the exact opposite of ideal.

Clearly, this person has attempted to make a joke.

A bad joke, yes, but the fact remains: he/she attempted sarcasm and humor and failed. Miserably.

If one were to make an app that interfaced to a system that wasn't on the iPhone / iPod touch, then you wouldn't have to deal with this. ie, you register your poll / question with a server app, which knows your friends, and sends a notification to them. The problem with that is that you then have to have network connectivity at the time, rather than being able to queue up the email.

Yea, I was thinking it would all be accessed through some sort of server/database and dynamically updated when someone answers the poll. Obviously it is not that easy, but it really gets you thinking about what the SDK really will be able to do and some of the apps that might be feasible...

Maybe the the SMS notifies the person, then it gives them a link that opens the polling app on the iphone, the polling app then accesses the server and such, and spits out the pie chart showing feedback, and then they can submit their answer and it sends it back to the server/database....

Just throwing out what comes to mind....
