I agree. There has to be more to this. The need to order black curtains for every store and hide just this doesn't make sense.

Well when you add in POS changes, signage etc... Yeah, that FOES justify the secrecy. Lets not forget here that Apple are seen as a leader in retail the same way they are in, say, phones and their competitors would love to get advance warning of what they're up to with a large scale revamp.

Testify *CLAP*

If this is a sales process retooling, it wouldn't surprise me at all that they would have mandatory meetings to get everyone up to speed on the new process. Apple's retail stores are the most profitable retail stores on the planet (based on floor space), and anything that Apple does to improve the retail sales process should be considered a competitive advantage. For instance, if this retooling results in better sales flow, thus increased revenue, it will make for even better margins (where Apple's competitors still can't find their ass with both hands).

Also, consider the new iCloud service. What better way to up-sell customers than to have an online review of benefits, quick demos, and other "salesy" stuff when the customer is checking out -- and to have all of it well-presented (polished, attractive, good flow) during the sales process. It makes a difference, and would be a welcome and effective way to drive new service sales.

Asking a hipster to shave his beard is like knocking Thor's hammer out of his hand! How dare you!

I dare big time! I know many a hipster where it was the beard or a job. One coffee shop around here was busted by Public Health for having a bearded baristia. Manager told him to shave the beard or quit. He refused to quit and they fired him for insubordination of health codes.

SOOOOOO....

We finally found out the backlog of iPad 2 orders that caused 3-4 week delays!

They was producing them as mobile tills for apple stores so that should account for a large chunk of them!

Do they get counted in to total ipad sales when steve says how well the ipad 2 has sold?:p

Apple, unlike at least one of their tablet competitors, does not count how many they flood their retail outlets with, but rather counts end-user sales.

Great Name

"Insubordination of Health Codes" would be a great name for a band.

I'm having a hard time believing that all of this secrecy will result in something so boring. So they are going to start using iPad's. How does keeping that a secret benefit anything?

For those holding AAPL, news about improvements to the already successful retail experience is anything BUT boring.

This is one thing that has most retailers scratching their heads. How can Apple afford to have trained staff? The answer simply is they sell product at a margin high enough to afford to train staff. When you buy an Apple product, this is not walking into Fry's or Best Buy looking at the NITs (noobs in ties.)

I have been really surprised to see the same staff at my Apple store for over two years now. Either the economy really sucks or they are compensated well.

Also, consider the new iCloud service.

You hit the nail right on the head. This is the relaunch of MobileMe into iCloud. Think of it. Black curtains. Storm. Dawn. Then ... the "awwwwww!!!!" iCloud. I hope they don't have the totally overused Creation of Man from the Sistine Chapel. I'm sure it will be more cartoon-like.

A few changes I would suggest
1. Instruct employees how to shave and keep a neat appearance
2. Improve on the 30 to 45 minutes they are running late for appointments.
3. Block Facebook from store computers.

Couldnt agree more with ya on all them points especially No.3. Im fed up of walking into the Apple store and being surrounded by a load of smelly ferrel chavs (reprobates)who either should be at school or just make the place look untidy.

Apple has this sales philosophy that if a store looks busy then people will want to come in but it does the complete opposite and turns potential customers away. They should definitely ban FB and other social networking sites from the in store hardware thus curing the problem of chavs at least.

As for the staff, well I guess the unshaved look is a fashion that we have to live with but sometimes I look at some staff and wonder whether their T Shirt has ever seen the underside of a hot iron. Another thing that gets on my tits is their persistence in calling me me 'mate or buddy' by all means you dont have to be so formal with Sir or anything but Hello will do just fine followed by the usual small talk.

Ha! Ha! I remember a video of Ballmer trying to do just that!

I think you hit the nail squarely on the head with that tie-in with iCloud! What an awesome "close" that would be! Close on the iDevice, AppleCare, iCloud subscription and accessories all in one swoop. Then automatically set up the customer's subscription and iTunes account and throw in some free apps, and a few free songs. The customer leaves the store plucked clean but fully knowledgable about what they own.

Ahhh, I can see it now. The Great Turttle-necked One handing an iDevice to Adam, representing mankind, recumbent on a pile of passé PCs.

A few changes I would suggest

I just wish they'd put at least one of everything on display. I don't mean every possible processor & memory config, but I've been to the Apple store in San Diego UTC looking to check out the magic trackpad, the macbook pro 15's new Hi-Res screen, & get a view of what OSX Server works & looks like... any number of other items, and I've been told they don't display those items. ...how the heck are we supposed to decide to buy them then?

Also, I think more people would be impressed checking out the slick macbook pros if they set the trackpads for the soft tap instead of the clunky hard click.

Nothing new here. My local Apple store already uses iPad 2s for many functions.

Ok, they are going to use iPads for point of sale.

According to my sources, no they are not.

Customer facing ipads (which have been around for almost a year) are for 'concierge' functions like making appointments and checking folks into appointments. Plus they have a digital wait list (has been around for a while) that they use to track folks during busy times so that someone that has been waiting for half an hour isn't snaked by someone that just walked in.

The iOS app for customers already exists. All they are doing is making an ipad version for customers (that waitlist is part of the app)

Yes they have added an ipad based RetailMe because most stores only have at most 2 computers for staff to do their required email etc checks but at least 10 employees coming on shift at the same time. Since they require that you do those checks before you hit the floor they had to do something. Using 10-12 ipads per store covers that. Plus it allows them to have more than 2 folks off the floor doing training at the same time

Set up sessions and areas already exist and have since Christmas. Some stores are finally receiving new tables (tail end of a 5 month change over) that is all.

As for the displays etc, that sounds too Microsoft glitz to be completely true. New sound systems, particularly ones that can be used during workshops to cut the music in that area and amplify the speaker make sense. But the whole flashing movies on the walls stuff. Too much style and not enough substance for Apple. No one actually believes any of that to be true.

Nor do they believe that Apple is asshat enough to put a ton of ipads out on the floor as displays when the online store still has ship dates of over a week out. The negative PR would be major

What they do believe is that the revamp of MobileMe is about to happen and they are perhaps getting a preview and training now so that they will be ready to really push it when it goes public. Rather than a ton of "I don't know, we just found out about it too" which makes them look bad.

That store doesn't. But I can see every one of those things at all 5 of the stores in LA that I visit. And only one of them is one of those giant floor plan type stores (The Grove). The rest are shoeboxes. So the 'don't display' isn't universal.

Black curtains. Phone ban. 7am meetings. I don't think it's just a run of the mill operating change. :apple:

Black curtains -- due to complaints about customers knocking on the door when they see folks inside.

7am meeting. Mixing it up. Not that crazy. Not everyone wants to have their evening ruined. So play fair and switch things around. It's pretty much always Sunday in the US because most stores are in malls and the mall hours on Sundays are open later and close earlier than other days. Easier to have a meeting without having to change hours.

Phone ban. Done all the time. It insures that the meeting isn't disturbed by ringing phones and folks aren't distracted.

And the NDA talk. They have started doing that at every meeting to remind folks that there's a firm rule to keep your mouth shut. Talking is cause for termination.

I agree 100%. I hate Apple stores, mostly because they are packed with people that have no intention of buying anything. I avoid them at all costs.

Pretty ironic, judging by your avatar image. Where's the freedom gone? Instruct? Block? That's a tea party?

Don't need to speak for him, but it is not ironic at all. You see there is a difference between the government making laws that restrict free speech and a private company making any rules it wants to. Allowing a private company to do what it wants without government intervention is freedom. I suggest you get yourself a civics lesson.

Fashion Island Apple Store has ALL of the above on display at all times....Also ever seen someone who has NOT used a trackpad suddenly tap and click everything when they dont want to? Makes it a VERY confusing experience...I have used them for years and hate that function....
