As most of you may know, my primary camera for shooting is my phone and in fact I’ve sold my DSLR a few years back to take up phone photography as a personal challenge to get better at it.

Since we’ve got so many talented professional and amateur photographers in this forum I want to be a bit cheeky and put you all under the same restrictions and in the process hoping to learn some new techniques and get better at shooting with a smartphone.

So I want to make it a point that the topic of this competition is - Spontaneous - but at the same time the picture should be taken with a smartphone.

The contest closes at 23:59 GMT on Monday 8th March.

Be creative and enjoy!

Standard rules apply.

  • Follow all relevant local laws regarding stay-at-home orders. If you can't go outside, try and take a photo at home or grab one from the archives.
  • Do not comment, vote, react or click “like” on images prior to the winners being announced.
  • The photographs must be your own work.
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • This contest runs for one week. If in doubt, check the dates in the title.
  • At the end of the week, The Judge will choose a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • If the Judge is unable to complete the selection within 48 hours of the deadline, then last week's 2nd place has to step in. 3rd place takes over should 2nd place be similarly unable to officiate.
  • The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create a new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.
  • Contest ends at 23:59 GMT on 8th March

One of my spontaneous shot with a glass of beer on one hand and my phone on the other was this at the Brighton pier.

Funny I rarely use my phone camera but my tracks entry was with more phone.

I mean you don’t have a choice other than finding a solid entry for this week simply because I didn’t conspire against you as suggested in the previous competition by @oblomow

Although it was really tempting.

This is going to be difficult to accomplish, because anything I take with the phone today will not be spontaneous but with the competition in mind ;)
I will endeavour to find true spontaneity from the archives.

Cheers :)

I'm going to sit out on this one. My phone has a very poor quality camera because that's not what I use my phone for. I have exactly one cell phone picture (that happens to have been taken very spontaneously. I had already packed up my camera and was too lazy to take it out again.) It's a good scene but the image quality sucks. I mean, it REALLY sucks. I'm also a bit gun-shy after oblomow (rightfully so) took me to school last week.

That was just 1 failed photo among many great ones. Please don't be shy. Shall we post a crappy phone photo together? :) On 3. 1,2, 3

Don’t be shy, that’s the whole point of this contest, for me to learn from your expertise and see what people can do with their phones. Oops shouldn’t have said that.

Go for it!

Now that’s what I call solid sportsman spirit. Enjoy the entry just for the process of it.

I was out walking the dog in local woods, I spotted this bee amongst the wild apple blossom and grabbed my iPhone SE 1.

Cheers :)

Okay. As I said, this is the only cell phone picture I have ever taken. I was on a shoot with a friend at Cleveland's West Side Market. It is an indoor/outdoor market with about 75 vendors selling specialty foods. I had already packed up my camera and we were heading out. I saw this and was too lazy to take out my camera again. The problem is that I have a phone that can also take some poor quality photos. I do not have a quality camera that also makes phone calls.

This is behind the scenes at the felafel stand. I believe this is the owners' son picking the parsley leaves off the stems. He was clearly not happy about it.

Processing this was difficult because the underlying image quality REALY sucked. I finally decided on this grainy B&W treatment because it did the best job of hiding some of the issues. The blown out areas were intentionally done in processing to create a vignette to bring the focus back to the boy (and to hide some other image quality issues.)

Took my (2020) Feathers Race 5K Challenge by covering a fair bit of ground 'atop' (heh!) Arabia Mountain . . . chose a back-/by-way 'round the lake, and found this Love-Couple; attached to eachother; on to a branch...

Luna Moth(s) In Flagrante Delicto; iP8; un-processed

Noisy boy, disturbing my morning coffee...

At some point I realized the closest campsites to my house were only about 15 miles away, so I strapped everything I could to my bike and headed out for a spontaneous overnight!

This was taken over 5 years ago, with an LG G4. I had a toddler in one arm and a 4-year-old on the loose, with the added pressure of getting back to car before dark. I almost didn't take the photo. I think it's still my favorite landscape shot, and it has been my work wallpaper this whole time.

Saw this spectacular morning sky a while back on the way to work with only my iPhone SE to capture it.

Somebody's forgotten to close the contest - get some more entries in before he realizes :D

Cheers :)

Hugh

Somebody was too tired last night and went to bed earlier.

But this one is CLOSED now.

Will be back with results later in the evening.
