    Rules:

    1. You may only submit one photo per contest.

    2. The contest runs for exactly one week, from the first time stamp of the first post in the thread (this will be made by the winner of the previous week's contest).

    3. Please refrain from commenting on the photos submitted in the contest. A good photograph is one that can appeal to someone who may not know much about the technical aspects of photography, so it would be best if the judge isn't swayed by someone else's opinion of the photograph.

    4. The judge will choose his/her favorite at the end of the week, place a post listing it, and include a short synopsis of why he/she chose that photo. The winner is then responsible for choosing a new topic and starting a new contest thread, which will again run for exactly one week.

    This week's theme: Amazing World
To clarify: The theme is around anything that you find amazing and captured on "digital film". Anything from a macro shot of an insects eye to a panorama of Mount Everest goes. It has to reflect the amazing world that we live in. I am looking forward to seeing some truly spectacular images.:)

Not my amazement, but that of our children entering the inners of an hydro power plant.

Fire amazes me. It is essential to our way of life and yet can be extremely destructive to it.

Electricity amazes me. I'm amazed by electricity because we are able to harness all of that power, with out it where would we be? I think we tend to take it for granted sometimes.

The image is of our nightlight in the hallway.

Edit again: after I thought about this, this can actually fit the topic
Edit 3: can someone explain to me why after some time my flickr photo becomes unavailable?

Captured this wonderful scene while walking down the Granville Street Bridge on a trip to Vancouver.

Before the days of GPS, satellite phones, radar and sonar, ships traveling up the rugged coasts of the US relied on these to help them get to where they had to go. This is the lighthouse at Heceta Head, OR. It was an overcast day, but the clouds part towards sunset and I was able to capture the evening sun lighting up the lighthouse:

I finally made it to Easter Island last year - it did not disappoint.

Engineering and big things amaze me.

This is the Millau Viaduct in France, taken just after sunrise when the valley below was still filled with cloud. Gave you the sense that this huge structure really was otherworldly.

PS: Just realised it's been almost exactly a year since I've entered the Weekly Photo Contest, it's nice to be back :)

After looking at some of these photo's I realised that from a technical and compositional point of view I probably wouldn't be able to match these photos.

However, when looking through my library I remembered this evening in Australia where the sky really looked as if it was on fire.

Whilst it wasn't perfect with reflections and that couldn't be helped being in the departure lounge of an airport but I think the overall "feel" is there.

I'm amazed that just one week before I took this photo - these crickets were plain boring green and almost invisible - suddenly they were advertising their presence - could be dangerous or rewarding!

An engineering marvel. This enormous 660 ton pendulum spans 4 floors atop Taipei 101, one of the tallest skyscrapers in the world. It rests on 4 sets of cables and 4 enormous hydraulic dampers, and sways to cancel the potentially devastating movement of the building due to strong winds 92 floors up. Without it the building would resonate violently and collapse to the ground.
