First off, thank you for the submissions this week. I realize it was kind an "open season" and looking at the shots now, Ihad a heck of a time judging. They were all good and it was a tough call in the end…

Oblomow: Love the idea of the shot. I also like how the two kids look away from each other to opposite sides, makes you follow both ways. The only issue I have is that the angle of view could have been slightly lower, giving it more of a "huge" feeling.

Keleko: Excellent capture in the right moment. What intrigues me is the fact that the flames at the top arelarge and the whole squirting explosion is at the bottom, it looks good. Only detail: There is too much nothing on the right side.

Ghostshadow: If you wouldn't have told me what it is, I would have never guessed. It looks like a tunnel of some sort and you could have left it at that :). It is an interesting capture for sure the only thing is, for my taste it has too much black/nothingness. Sometimes it works, and it does work to some degree here too, just a little bit tighter crop would have been great.

Love: I love the contrast of green and red, the colors are very well saturated (on my screen). Plants are a subject I expected to be redone over and over this week but it wasn't. If you would have had a slightly larger aperture to blur the background more, this shot would have been ace, then gain you would have lost some depth of field…win some loose some..

Tmagman: I love city shots as well What intrigues me in this shot is that I find myself bouncing between left and right because left is motion-blurred and right not much at all. Interesting effect. The only detail here is that its a very busy shot and it might tire the viewer when bouncing across the photo.

Patriks7: A very well executed cityscape and the reflections are nice and colorful. On first glance it looks almost like the bridge pole on the far left with the whole bridge belongs to the castle, middle ages style. The only detail: The castle is blown out, which is a shame, if you have a RAW file you could try with curves to recover some of the detail and just brush that in.

Cupcakes2000: I was waiting for a shot like this. It's large wild, and peaceful but why grey? Not even black and white, the snow is grey etc. If it was shot at dusk or dawn you could have brightened it when converting to B & W. Otherwise nice shot.

Jabbott: I am not sure what I am more amazed with in this shot, the fact that the detail is awesome or the fact that it was shot with a Powershot and not a DSLR with a macro lens :)

JDDavis: I expected a great shot from you and this is one of them. The blue really draws your eye in and the detail is very nice. Only drawback the large emptiness on the left. If the creature would have looked that way it would have been great :)

Atenhouse: Nice capture but it looks to be camera shake blurred on the right side (lamp posts). Otherwise the lines work very well but again, why black and white? I would have loved to see the color version of it.

Fcortese: Love it.. the light the direction the gradual change from left to right in color shift, it all works..Only detail is the strong vignetting on the top left corner?

Parkin Pig: I had to laugh on this shot. It was like some guys were looking at me from the screen, the front one saying: HEY YOU.. LOK AT ME!. The placement and point of view is excellent and makes for an interesting if not funny photo.

Mickbab: great perspective and I have not much to say about this, I love the linethat leads the eye. in but not all the way tot he center etc. This shot works for me. The only detail: The sky slightly more saturated?

Elbert C: Wow… I was stunned when I saw this shot. Great capture, great light…nothing to complain from my part.

Huer111: I love the pattern of the bark , itmakes your eye follow and go up and down the tree. The only distraction is, the other tree :)

Barnzee: Traditional beach shot and very well executed. I like that the water is motion blurred in the front buy out on the ocean not so much anymore. Also the land tip leads nicely into the picture format he side.Only detail: The top left corner is a bit white and empty for my taste, maybe a thither or 16:9 crop?

Acearchie: Man, sorry but if the reflections would not have bent here, this would have been hands down my favorite shot this week. It must have been awesome to have been there and see that sunset.

AxisOfBeagles: An impressive capture of a great waterfall. Only detail: too much water, too little else, the environment is missing. Otherwise great shot.

Chappers: You have become my favorite person with selective coloring. I think its overdone and don't like 99% of all the shots done that way but yours just work. The colors and detail on that cricket is very, very impressive. Only detail: can I see the shot with the background? is it all green? That might work just as well…

Mikedec: I like this shot, I cannot tell you why, but I like it. It is something I would expect in the living room of an apartment of a mid twenties hip person. The only detail: The sun, if it would be placed ot the right of the pier and the pier shorter, it would have made a nice lead-in line with a point in the end. Now they overlap.

Cleanup: If you would have not mentioned what it was I would have never guessed. I like the clean feel to it and once my brain knew what it was, it was amazing. 660tons.. geese….Black and white, here works.

So, the winner and runner ups:

Honorary mention: acearchie and mikedec

Elbert C , you turn.:)

Firstly Congrats to Elbert C - I chose that shot myself as the probable winner this week. Nice atmosphere. Im glad it won.

flosseR : I'd love to be able to post the original of mine but I'm away from home and pulled that shot from my Flickr page. The background was mostly green but the little bubble structures were white flowers. Thanks for the compliment.

Congratulations Elbert C. Well deserved!

flosseR thanks for judging. One minor detail: it would be nice to link the comments back to each photo, that way the reader don't have to flip back and forth beween pages and look for the photos.

There were definitely a lot of good pictures this week. You did a great job picking out the best ones.

Awesome! Congrats ElbertC! I loved the otherworldliness (ironically enough) of your photo. Great capture.

I'm fairly glad I didn't win, as I'm not much of a photographer and I don't think I could've given such solid critiques as you did, flosseR. The next contest would've been disappointing. :p

Thanks for judging! Can't wait to see next week's submissions.

Great job judging flosseR! Great shots this week. There was some really good stuff to look at. Congrats to ElbertC, your shot had a wonderful and mystical feel too it. Very interesting. Don't sell yourself short cleanup. That was a great shot. One of my favorites and very interesting to look at. Reminds me of a Bond movie or a video game. Pretty cool.

Yes again- Thanks for the great commentary FlosseR! We need more judges like you for the photo contest!

And congratulations to ElbertC- i get this sort of 'Band of Brothers' feel from that photo! Great shot!

According to his user stats, ElbertC has contributed to the Contest on a regular basis, but isn't very active beyond that (as far as posts go). Someone make sure he knows he won. Do the PM thing.

Dale

Thanks everyone. Great job on judging the contest, flosser. New theme is up for entries. Being a noob to this, I hope I'm doing it right.

After looking at some of these photo's I realised that from a technical and compositional point of view I probably wouldn't be able to match these photos.

However, when looking through my library I remembered this evening in Australia where the sky really looked as if it was on fire.

Whilst it wasn't perfect with reflections and that couldn't be helped being in the departure lounge of an airport but I think the overall "feel" is there.

The reflections distract for sure but this pic immeadiatly reminded me of a Quentin Tarantino film (Kill Bill 1 or maybe 2).
